There are people born that are not female or male.
return as 0 then and it will have no statisical affect therefore irrelevant
Are we still talking about how ineffective these profiling tests are?
lol this discussion/argument/rage is silly. while I understand that gender is a social construct and has variance and range (took a semester long class on this..), I think what slayer is getting at (and what I agree with for the most part) is you can effectively treat gender as binary because the distribution is so polarized, and the binary abstraction will include something like 99% of everyone.

Why are males worth more than females? First the offensive assumptions of transgenered, now this mysogynistic view that females are worth nothing, and males are worth something? Are you just trying to offend everybody today?

But you've made it clear that that's not what matters to you and that's fine.
i wouldn't say it doesn't matter to me, it simply was not relevant to my argument at all and you guys have spent a whole page trying to get me to argue someone that other people are much more well informed and have thought more about the issue than i have.
there are plenty places to discuss the issue you're talking about, but trying to force your views on people who even scratch the surface or a topic you are talking about it is a very "feminazi" thing to do.

yes i am trying to offend everyone

yes you can whether its useful or not it up for debate but surely having more information isn't a bad thing?
binary categories woman 0 man 1
amagerd you binary categories
you can still judge a lot about a person and their interests statisically based on just those things. Look at % of male posters on teamliquid, compared to say, % of women on pintrest or something.
you guys need to learn to statistics instead feeling like your individuality is threatened.
It is funny that y'all mention binary categories when MBTI subtypes all have normal distribution, rather than a bimodal one.
binary was only mentioned by someone else, apparently to drag me into their completely tangential views on something that normal distribution completely ignores
I've literally only responded to things you've said im not sure how im forcing myself on you. EDIT: so as long as you fit into the pre-determined categories these tests will reiterate what you already know. EDIT: slayer don't flatter yourself i wasn't even talking to you and your the one who brought up the whole woman man thing
you took the fact that i said man or woman meant that i had a classical view on sex=gender and not that statisically its non relevant and saying man and woman is what people say when they mean male and female in anything but a super PC world.
these tests don't give YOU any useful information, not directly. but it can give other people useful information. Targetting advertisement to personality types say, or dating people with "compatible" personality types. (maybe people who go out a lot don't get along with people who want to stay in most of the time)

You said gender and sex are binary but they are not so you are wrong. People also use the correct terms in the educated world

no. you said you CAN't categorize people in binary terms.
returning every born male as 1 and every born female as 0 and everyone that's some kind of 1 in a million mutation as 1 is totally valid in a binary categorization.
On October 17 2013 01:30 Scip wrote: What does that have anything at all to do with personality tests
you don't need a personality test to figure out whether you are a man, woman, male or female or none of the above
you claimed that personality tests are useless because they put you in a broad category which you know more about yourself. my claim was that they are useful statisically because say for example you can market things that men like (statisically) with advertisements that draw men more. (e.g david mitchell and webb sketch women sort yourself out

Having 3 options is not binary
you return anything that isn't one of the 2 straight into one of the other one it is just basically an error and its ignored again your argument is totally nitpicking you can just as easily say Human in europe 1 Human not in europe 0 and thats also useful statisically based on what europeans buy more of
however when we're talking about statisics (how many times do i have to say it) we completely ignore the 0.00001% of the "third" time.
NEARLY everyone is born either male or female NEARLY everyone identifies as either man or a woman statisically we don't care about the 0.00001% outlier and thus we ignore it
i have made the same statement like 10 times already wtf

statistical error. im irish and im not (yet) and alcoholic. I am a statisical error but that doesn't hurt my feelings.

depends on accurate it is. if you made bad categories then your advertising will be skewed You will be selling pink razors and selling bowel syndrome ads for old people with heavy metal music

Go back and lose argument to csheep in on topic.
Aside from mislabeling I agree with slayer. For the most part arguing for outlier representation is a pointless exercise in futility.
