Random thoughts for the win.
Watch Pokemon: Origins and see Team Rocket done mostly right. Was pretty cool as well

What is all this talk about MBTI? o.o Why the hell even go do a personality test when you then judge its accuracy. "obviously it's not perfect, but it got a decent amount right." Well what's the fucking point of a personality test when it is always less accurate than your own words? It is of no use to anybody, since instead of having other people read that long list of things you can explain the crux of your personality in about 5 sentences. And it obviously doesn't help you, since you consider it less accurate than your own opinion
fuck personality tests I call bs on them

I think it's more about providing a common context and vocabulary for explaining some very overarching traits that people possess. Personality isn't really classifiable unless it's general and vague, so that's bound to cause some confusion for people who see themselves differently than they test.

Usually they're used in career planning type scenarios to take the rough picture of your personality and say "people with similar likes/dislikes often find x career satisfying." Which is used mostly as a brainstorming source for exploration into jobs that someone might not have considered.

describes classes of personalities, might be able to cater things better or w/e. its not about describing yourself better its about classifying you with other similar people its like saying whats the point of calling someone a jock or a nerd or an emo or w/e

It's a worse gimmick than horoscopes because they ask you questions till they know what you expect to hear. General statements based off of what you already told them about yourself. You can't just lump people into binary categories.
|
Discussing the terms and labels and even just how you answered specific questions is a springboard into understand ourselves and one another. It's a beautiful thing and you'll like it Scip.

yes you can whether its useful or not it up for debate but surely having more information isn't a bad thing?
binary categories woman 0 man 1
amagerd you binary categories
you can still judge a lot about a person and their interests statisically based on just those things. Look at % of male posters on teamliquid, compared to say, % of women on pintrest or something.
you guys need to learn to statistics instead feeling like your individuality is threatened.

wat you're either a man or a woman, or you were either born a man or a woman and have gender identity issues and you think youre the opposite, everything still returns either 1 or 0. (and only like 0.00001% of people are like transgender or w/e).
i mean statistically it's so insignificant that I can't believe anyone would say "gender is DEFINITELY not binary" when we're talking about statistics.

I'm not sure if your serious... gender and sex are not the same thing. you may be born with a sex that fits into the 2 most common ones but that doesn't make it binary. Also if you feel confident profiling everyone as either male or female, what are you trying to say about everyone in those group?
|
i never mentioned the word gender or sex, (until you mentioned) you are getting into a totally new argument. I am fine with either gender OR sex, either one is binary.
The 2 most common sexes? There ARE only 2 sexes. wtf...
Profiling based on if you're male or female is VERY widespread in marketting. Chocolate advertisements and such will be aimed at women, beer and shaving at men, etc. (except for specific female specific razors which have a totally different advertisement styl)

Sigh. This is a complex topic, but it can be boiled down to sex is binary (and even that's negotiable) while gender is not. The reason for this is because sex is a biological construct while gender is a social one.
This is WAY oversimplified (and probably still a little wrong), but narrowing things down to "you're either a man or a woman" is pretty shortsighted in this day and age.

It was not my intention to start a new argument. You said everyone is either a man or a woman and i disagree. I think its important to know the difference between gender and sex to have that conversation.

Talking about important things is important.

this is an absurd strawman argument, im aware some people don't identify with being a man or woman but that doesn't mean you can tell a lot (STATISTICALLY HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY IT) depending on if you were born a male or female

If you did not intend to start an argument why would you start to argue semantics with me when we both knew exactly what i was talking about
im aware people love to think that gender doesn't exist and its all nuture or maybe just mostly nuture but it's just completely not relevant posts
