In SEED, only Rau used a funnel-like system. Rau. Mu's Zero had a similar system but it was conncected by wire and by your UC definition is not even funnel. Can Mu use funnel? If he can, he only used it in Destiny. But in Destiny Ray and Kira also used them, so it is not just Mu and Rau.

Because the point was the mecha and not the tech. SEED didn't give a shit and would contradict itself if it needed to to get where it wanted to go. UC Gundam doesn't do that. It's a critical difference in the subtext of the two shows. I've got a clip. This is like, the coolest clip ever for a diehard UC Gundam nerd. It's the first fight in Unicorn and the animators are going to tremendous lengths to animate all of the tech. They show you how the cockpit works. They show you how the funnels work. They show you how AMBAC movement works. They show you how the MS reactors work. They show you how the beams damage things by melting them instead of through concussive force or whatever. They show you how Newtypes work (at the end the pilot says something to Marida after he's already dead, things like that) They even animate in the minovsky particle cloud. Like, this clip is not just a fight scene. It's a gigantic Gundam-tech blowjob, and it's something you can't really appreciate if you're not a diehard Gundam fan. And it's something that SEED just doesn't do.

Ha, pretty much thought the same thing. I'm a dog person but when my friends say they want a dog in college I just shake my head and think about how they'd probably just be happier with a cat.

There are plenty of boards that are just there for discussion. /tg/ is great for board and tabletop games, /vp/ has creepy threads but also a lot of decent Pokemon talk, and some of the /vg/ threads for specific games are pretty good. I hear /m/ is cool if you like mecha but I was never as fanatical about it. /x/ can be decent from time to time when they post creepypasta or fun stories, but other times it's just kinda stupid. Just stay away from like /r9k/, /soc/, /b/ etc. There isn't THAT much illegal stuff on 4chan is there?

The budget and ambition is just completely different.

Initially the show was seen to be very rational and realistic, including that clip and the air bags and stuff. Then the show took a huge dive: 1. Minerva drops from the shuttle trusting that Banagher can hear her voice through their Newtype powers. 2. The two "miracles" Banagher performed. Nope. No explanations whatsoever. They simply "trusted" each other and their mythical Newtype powers. It was so inconsistent that it became a comedy show. Granted Unicorn is a newer show so my criticism is perhaps misplaced, but my point being 'Newtype' is the worst part of UC and largely incompatable with the 'realistic' robot show you mentioned.

The budget and ambition is just completely different. There's definitely cool little things in that clip that you can't see in that quality, like all the text on the stuff on the cockpit screens. And Unicorn is a big budget show that went to great lengths to make fans happy, while if you watch the original Mobile Suit Gundam you'll see a lot of bad animation and silly things that are typical for a show made in the 70s. But the intention was the same and comes through, or at least I would argue it does. And it's that intention that isn't there with SEED.

The last two or so episodes of Unicorn get reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally silly and I didn't like them near as much as the start of the series. Newtype magic is one of the silliest things in Gundam, and Unicorn isn't the worst offender. Double Zeta is, by far. But to be fair, your point 1 makes total sense. Newtypes talk to each other psychically from great distances all the time, and instinctively know who is a newtype and who isn't. It makes total sense that Minerva would know she can speak to Banagher that way from the instant she meets him. Point 2 is again just psychoframe/biosensor magic, which is silly and hard to defend. But it's not as silly as some of the things in Seed. Here, read this, it's good for a laugh: http://4chandata.org/m/What-was-the-significance-of-the-space-whale-in-Gundam-SEED-a337199

And I don't think you can argue that much of the original Mobile Suit Gundam was "scrapped" in the same way. There's one episode of the original series that was intentionally left out of the US release because it's A - too silly, and B - doesn't contain any important plot points, but that's it.
