If SEED ended with the Kira and Athrun duel would people consider SEED To be a good show? Episode 27-28 is Gundam written all over it and the show spent a great deal of effort to reach that point. It's actually a lot better than some of the older shows (Four Murasame LOLOLOL). I think the issue is that some people find the stuff afterwards to be a bit too TTGL-ish, which is fair, but some of the UC stuff are pretty bullshit and even worse than SEED (Axis Shock is fucking HILARIOUS). There are a lot of reasons why SEED and UC Gundam are different sorts of show. Here's a few of my favorite points: #1 - UC Gundam is about war. SEED is about cartoon war. In most UC Gundam series, a sizeable number of the main characters die by the end, one side will win whatever war it is, and neither side is morally or ethically justifiable. In SEED you have the same war going on, but the main characters are all some third party group of morally righteous children who are trying to stop the war in their amazing giant robots that are for silly reasons better than the machinery of both sides and do it without killing people. That is much more a super robot genre sort of idea, and has little to do with the original plotlines of a Gundam series. #2 - UC Gundam tries much harder than your average cartoon to explain the technology behind it. It's got some silly things that they made up (Minovsky particles and newtypes mostly), but the majority of it is actual technology. Its space colonies are actual space colony designs that have been proposed to the US Congress before (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O%27Neill_cylinder), the power source used for its machines is a real concept (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helium-3), and so on and so forth. If you're a military tech buff it's very easy to see how the machines and weapons used in your average Gundam show are knock offs of actual military tech that was used during those time periods. I mean it's still a cartoon and they still bullshit all sorts of things, but a presiding theme over UC Gundam shows is if they can explain something in real world terms, they tend to at least make an attempt to do it. That's a major draw of Gundam shows to me (and was a conscious and intended theme of the original series) and SEED doesn't do that. Essentially what SEED did was take the successful storyline of the original Gundam series from 1979, and repackaged it for a different sort of audience. Other recent shows have done the same thing, such as Valvrave and more recently Argevollen. Those shows I think are very similar to SEED, but none of them are on the same page as their predecessor.

There are plenty of boards that are just there for discussion. /tg/ is great for board and tabletop games, /vp/ has creepy threads but also a lot of decent Pokemon talk, and some of the /vg/ threads for specific games are pretty good. I hear /m/ is cool if you like mecha but I was never as fanatical about it. /x/ can be decent from time to time when they post creepypasta or fun stories, but other times it's just kinda stupid. Just stay away from like /r9k/, /soc/, /b/ etc.

It's got a lot of everything. It'd be like saying tl.net is about Starcraft.

I honestly think it's the format of the boards that keep me away. I prefer a more traditional forum like this one.

Those shows I think are very similar to SEED, but none of them are on the same page as their predecessor. #1: can't comment on 1979, but doesn't Zeta have the same problem? #2: if the concern is realism, remember UC has some gross problems on this. The most important aspect is the 'Newtype' and their supernatural telekinetic power (funnel control in particular) and adaptiveness to mobile suit combat. Some of this is so bad that I can't help but to giggle (again, Axis Shock). At least in SEED you can easily say coordinators are better pilots because they were genetically modified - this part was explained to the viewer from the beginning. Everything that happens in SEED is due to human agency. Not mysterious supernatural power.
