My friend graduated after a 3 year degree in comp sci. He spends his time working at home surfing reddit, and smoking pot in Washington. Cushy well-paid job from microsoft, damn him, DAMN HIM Please, try writing 20+ pages on cohomology chains for some topology that no one gives a fuck about except your professor

You're a math major (...I think). My papers are at least somewhat interesting. After writing about transitional justice I have to finish that paper analyzing North Korean decision-making in their post-Cold War nuclear and missile policy. And predict what Kim Jong Un will do.

I really can't stop shilling Deathmole enough, melodic metal with no vocals for me is just like the best thing to focus with. Here's a quick Grooveshark playlist I made, should be most things aside from their latest album (Permanence, which is BRILLIANT). Noteable standouts in that playlist include Lightning Background, 2-Step, Two Chord, Fighting off the Emus, The Pyrrhic Victory of the Unicorn Prince, Unicorn Waltz, Sheep Dirge, Horus, and basically the entire album Absent Gods & Creatures Foul. Fanboying aside, Red Hot Chili Peppers are my other go-to focus music. Online playlists would be much preferred. @Soniv (I almost typed Sonic whoops I don't think you're Sega's blue mascot) Yeah this summer what I'm doing is research as an undergraduate for my mathematics professor. Basically the problem that I'm working on this summer is getting the factorization of elliptic curves to be as large as possible. I don't really have all the details right now as this is only my first day and my supervisor is doing things in Ontario so I'm not in touch with him at the moment. Also thank you all for the music you sent me. I SHALL LISTEN TO ALL OF IT.

You're gonna need to learn quantitative measures, statistics, and econometrics if you're doing what I'm doing. Unless you're doing English or Philosophy, in which case lel. gl, I mean it Fun fact: social science departments innovate more statistical models than do math departments. I'm not even touching in-depth econometrics until I hit grad. I tried to read a textbook on macroeconomic modeling tools when I started my independent study, but my professor/advisor talked me out of that nightmare (thank god).

Humanities make no claims of scientific rigor or objective truth, but is rather an exploration of, well, what it means to be human. STEM is focused on the truth of the universe, with rigorous guidelines and methodologies. Neither of the two, by and large, pretends to be that which it is not. Social science is the worst intersection of the two. All the pretense of scientific innovation with none of the practical application, and all the pretense of social good without any results huehuehue. Am I prejudiced? Lomo.

Econometrics is pretty much the same toxic statistical nonsense that Sufficiency posts regarding League. Source: I am an economist.

What are you calling social science? That's like geography, sociology, psychology, economics? Some of those have some pretty clear benefits even if they aren't as gloriously pure as math.

If we want to get technical archaeology, law, education, linguistics, and anthropology are also social sciences, though there may be overlap with "humanities".
