Also, going to say "The Way of Kings"(Brandon Sanderson) as well. Although only one part of that is released, and there's supposed to be quite a lot. THE KINGKILLER CHRONICLES ARE SO FUCKING GOOD. That's some awesome fantasy right there. + Show Spoiler + it's totally poised to be a trilogy of trilogies. the next book could get up to present day. the books allude to shit going down as the story is told, so the second trilogy could be about Kvothe dealing with that. meanwhile there's some even greater danger in the background, which gets resolved in the third trilogy.
I'm hoping to start reading Hyperion sometime this week.

Does Atlas Shrugged count as a fantasy? lol.
Really though, on the topic of books, I've been meaning to start Infinite Jest, but been so busy.

I think the only adult fiction book that I've read since graduating university is 1Q84 by Murakami Haruki.
That book is... strange. In the middle and in the end I felt like it was a real page turner, but... I couldn't figure out why.
I also read a novel in Japanese for the first time (and it took me two years!) but it was cheesy and crappy so it'll be a while before I start reading another one.

way too tryhard bro. always mini games, never not mini games.

I think it goes without saying that I think Atlas Shrugged is a fantastic book.
a great guilty pleasure fantasy read is the black magician trilogy by trudi canavan. ender's game and bean's shadow of course are must reads.
if you didn't like harry potter you have no imagination and never knew what it meant to be a child.

I read "THE KINGLER CHRONICLES ARE SO FUCKING GOOD" and then I was wondering how a pokemon fanfic ended up in this book discussion.

For people who still like HP, try Groosham Grange by Anthony Horowitz. It's kind of the same subject matter, but still quite different.
And yeah, I grew up with HP too. Book 7 came out when I was 17 iirc.

Playing stadium with rentals is silly. Just import pkmn from your cartridge and dominate.

Dracula will forever be the best child/young teenager book ever.
It's just so incredibly well written !
Except the end. Fuck the end.

Still waiting for GRRM to release AWOW. I'll probably be waiting for a decade if the gap between AFFC and ADWD is anything to go by.
Beyond that, too busy reading social science literature. I think I'm the only person who actually enjoys reading Durkheim's Suicide. And who doesn't enjoy a good, academic paper positively correlating armed intervention with civilian victimization in intrastate conflicts? <_<;

Spoilers into Wise Man's Fears + Show Spoiler +The lamest copout: 1. Kvothe is a people of storytellers. 2. Characters dumbfounded by Kvothe's inability in present day

On a more serious note, I'm really interested if the 'drunken capitalization' in Denna's letter has a meaning revealed later on.
My only beef with Sanderson is his need for every main/side character to have a nickname. EVERY TIME. Dunno why it bothers me really. That said, love his world building and implementation of magic systems. My reading path was actually Way of Kings into Mistborn into Elantris, lol.
From Wiki: "Words of Radiance is an upcoming epic fantasy novel by American author Brandon Sanderson. The book is intended to be a sequel to The Way of Kings and the second in a planned ten-novel[1] series called The Stormlight Archive."

Anyone read the Mistborn series? Fantastic worldbuilding.

Abhorsen was great, glad to see that ya'll read a lot of stuff that I love.
If you guys are interested in that sort of kind of gritty fantasy, try The Night Angel trilogy (Brent Weeks), the Demon Cycle (Peter Brett), The First Law (Joe Abercrombie), The Lies of Locke Lamora (Scott Lynch), the Dagger and the Coin (Daniel Abraham) or Codex Alera (Jim Butcher). A couple of them start off real strong but admittedly start to drag a bit. A pretty good standalone is Tigana.
For epic feelz, read the Fault in Our Stars. Not fantasy, but oh my god the feelz.

The Stone and the Flute by Hans Bemmann is a quite nice novel. Probably better in German, as I think it's the original language, but very good in English also.
