I wonder when the term became widely used. There was a period in the 1800s where Americans had huge hard ons for Greek history right?

Like obviously there are lots of English words with Greek roots but sophomore seems particularly out-of-place.

Universities are essentially a conglomerate of colleges together and offer a wide variety of degrees. Community colleges only offer a small amount of degrees, mainly an associates degree which is equivalent to a universities gen ed program (the first 2 years). After you complete the gen ed program as well as a few other basic requirements you'll be accepted into your universities specific college for your major. For example, college of business administration or college of biological sciences. That's why even though it's a university we still have culturally called it college, because you're studying in a specific college within the university. At least that's how i've been explained it by one of my old teachers.

LOL my duo queue partner's car broke down and the first person he contacts is me. I live in a different city 150km away and have never owned a car. That thought process.
"1680s, "student in the second year of university study," literally "arguer," altered from sophumer (1650s, from sophume, archaic variant form of sophism), probably by influence of folk etymology derivation from Greek sophos "wise" + moros "foolish, dull." The original reference might be to the dialectic exercises that formed a large part of education in the middle years. At Oxford and Cambridge, a sophister (from sophist with spurious -er as in philosopher) was a second- or third-year student (what Americans would call a "junior" might be a senior sophister)." http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=sophomore
Note that the wise + foolish etymology is sometimes disputed as a misattribution. Regardless, the actual term we use today comes from Harvard who first used sophomore instead of sophister, and created the "junior" "senior" designation in lieu of "senior sophister." Study was also not as neatly divided into 4-years as it was today.

I had a class where everyone studied hard for the first test and over half the class failed. I thought I did really well on the test... nope. Second test I was like "whatever", didn't study at all, and almost aced it, as did most of the rest of the class. Some profs grade really oddly. It's from Greek roots. The soph- part is from sophos, for wisdom, and the more is from morus, for foolish (same root as moron). So sophomores are wise fools.
As i said, it's a cute and commonly repeated one, but it doesn't really hold up etymologically. I think most people are leaning to the idea that it's a misattribution today. It does comes from sophumer, but sophumer does not appear to not have been actually derived from "sophos + moros," but rather from "sophisme," which was turned into "sophume," without having to go through "moros" to get the "-me" part.

Things I've learned today, teenage pregnancy is still a thing and it saddens me, no one not even the teachers have a clue what a university or a college is.

Someone gave me a hug for my TL Shirt today. I felt good
TL SHIRT = FREE HUGS.
I want to get a hair cut, but everytime I look in the mirror I swear I'm balding. I kind of want to just not... but I have hippie hair and it looks awful. What do friends?

I always told myself if I started balding I'd buzz it real short. Gotta embrace it, looks super goofy when you see guys trying to cover it up. Shaved head with receding hairline still looks dignified imo.

It was me and I gave him a reach around. I mean a high five.

I may have to do this, I just don't want to. Plus it's not like it stupid bad yet, I only really notice after I shower and wet my hair. The top spot of my head is just way thinner than the rest of my hair.
