On April 03 2014 01:39 Shelke14 wrote: I'll look into it cancer sheep ![]() TOP PAGE. I rock. All kneel to me! I plug Diana Wynne Jones literally every chance I get. She is criminally underrated, partly because she gets pigeonholed into a "non-serious YA writer" even though her prose is effective, her stories wildly imaginative, creative, and fresh (not to mention ahead of her time), and I suspect well over 90% of successful sci-fi and fantasy authors working today were exposed to and heavily influenced by Jones in their childhood, whether or not they admit it. Her themes are straightforward and she doesn't work in epic high fantasy with vast landscapes and world-building (minus Dalemark Quartet, which is a gem in its own right), but goddammit if she's not a good storyteller. Orson Scott Card himself has a nice little piece on Jones + a few of her works here if you're interested http://www.hatrack.com/osc/reviews/f&sf/92-02.html Excerpt (emphasis added), and keep in mind this was penned all the way back in 1992! Diana Wynne Jones has been around, if not forever, then at least longer than I have. But her works in America remain strangely invisible to many readers, I suppose for the same old reason: Her books are marketed to the young adult audience. Thus many of you may well remember her books from junior high or high school. But you won't see them in many of the speciality science fiction stores, and in others her books are scattered here and there -- Howl's Moving Castle in the adult fantasy section; The Lives of Christopher Chant and Dogsbody in YA; and, far too often, many of her titles nowhere at all! But go to any junior high school library, and there you'll find her work missing from the shelves for another reason -- the good reason. The books are checked out. The books are read. And so it is that as with William Sleator and Daniel Pinkwater -- some of the best sf and fantasy of our generation is well known to kids and ignored by most adults. Just look at the YA adult stuff that's popular today - Jones did it all, and better (less formulaic and trite) decades earlier.

I also recall absolutely nothing about it other than the fact that it just lifted things from mythology. Lol yup. Why I loved it. I'm a huge nerd for series that deal with god like individuals being portrayed as more causal like. Anything with Nordic and Greek gods or even characters like Michael, Gabriel, lucifer in a sort of struggle of angel vs demons way. Probably why i loved supernatural season 4 or 5 where they were a heavy source of the plot Or Dresden Files! (I feel like a broken record) Norse mythology, Native American mythology, the Fae, Judeo-Christian angels and demons, and all other monsters and gibblies show up.

Howl's Moving Castle the anime, from what I was told, was awful. The original was great however. Confusingly, Castle in the Sky (anime) has nothing to do with the sequel to Howl's Moving Castle (book), Castle in the Air (book). Similarly, Tales of Earthsea the anime was based on the Earthsea series by Ursula K. LeGuin, also fantastic novels with a horrid adaptation. Arrietty is from some random English kids' book IIRC.

in the end they're all very distant adaptations of source material though.

How do you think people would feel about a general cooking thread? I've seen some blogs, but I'd like to make for more for people to ask questions about cooking, maybe recipe tips, etc.
