Damn. Shin just wasted too much resources and sloppy handling of units, but still won.

Have a 20k resource lost deficit but make 15 brood lords and still win the game. Miss the old GSL days.

Will Clem play the entire tournament as a Terran, or will he play as a Protoss with other Terrans?

The turn around time on these GSLs is too fast given how few rounds there are. It feels a bit lifeless with only 12 players. Im happy to watch and support GSL but something feels lacking with how it is done.

It is also a weird decision that they held the qualifier for S2 before S1 was even finished...is there any reason why they have to rush this much?

Studio time maybe? Idk what else it could be, way too fast a turnaround for my personal tastes

I could only watch like 75% of Clem vs Classic so I missed his games vs Cure, how did he lose?
Is GSL that Special that Even in its reduced format the top foreigners disappoint?
I thought herO + Clem was a given in this group

Damn it Clem! ayayay. I would never expect him to finish last in this group. He did so well in qualifier. Especially he was favored against Cure, I thought. Every good foreign player that tries gsl, seems to be somehow cursed by default. The more kudos to Scarlett, Neeb for reaching playoffs. am still so unsatisfied Serral has never tried.

I think its just a mix of an unfogiving format and then you hit a stadked group and it's so easy to go out like that.
Imo that also shows that all these statements that player xyz would do well in gsl is nothing but talk as the tournament always manages to prove that it just isnt that easy.

G1: Clem goes for 4 gate blink against 2-base push from Cure. Clem gets a good backdoor attack into the main before recalling back, but gets wrecked when he tries to clear out the Tanks sieging him. Cure wins with follow-up attack.

G2: Clem plays Charge-first with Immortal and beats a different version of 2-base all-in.

G3: Cure plays for Mine-drop into another Marine-Tank push but there's a 3rd CC behind it this time. Clem's charge and zealot warp-in are just barely too late to stop his third base from going down, and he's screwed from there.

It's lowkey bugging me at this point that the foreigners continue to underperform in GSL, haha, as it maintains that veil of mystique around GSL which otherwise feels out of place these days.

But it is what it is and so we are likely to get some set of the usual suspects in the playoffs. Let's see if Shin can repeat his success against Maru tomorrow.

Maru lategame took a nosedive, hes just all about turtling and hoping the opponent took a bad fight so that he can counter and win. There were moment in the game against Zoun where he can push with 30 army supply advantage but he chose to stay home and turtle, to let Zoun grow back his econ and army. There was no threat of pushing, and the harassment is zero after the mine drop,

Amazing ZvZ series and ZvP from Rogue right after winner match. Rogue seemed favorable to win more ZvZ games whenever either against Dark, Solar, DRG, Soo or Shin in ro.8 of GSL onwards.

GSL continues to OWN foreigners, even in it's shriveled online state. It's always been the hardest and best tournament.

Massive respect to the chad Clem for trying, his reaction made me feel super sad for him.

Hope he doesn't give up and tries again.

Thanks. I guess at this level everything can happen in bo3, plus knowing your opponents in advance help players prepare accordingly.

Maru is still somehow the best / 2nd best terran in the world even when playing shaky, impressive

I would love to see Reynor getting into the final first before Clem. He has been trying for a couple of times before (I think 4th or 5th times attempt already?). His best record was ro.8, same like Scarlett did.

It’s kinda baffling they can’t get it done. Not necessarily win, but make a deep run.

The prep aspect is much diminished. The tournament is much more compact time wise than it used to be, so you don’t have to be based in Korea for ages. There’s very little explicable reason that top foreigners aren’t performing in this tournament anymore given they can do it elsewhere

I think Serral can smack most of the field, he’s got an incredibly strong mentality and consistency, but alas he doesn’t seem interested.

Reynor’s got a comparable peak and Clem’s got an arguably higher one, but their floor isn’t nearly as good. Maybe that’s the difference maker

Maybe it really is just the "home team effect". Being more comfortable playing where you live etc.
Koreans seem to do relatively better in KR vs foreigners, roughly about the same amount as foreigners do relatively better outside KR. When it comes to say Cure, Maru, or herO getting to a international top 4 or top 2 but not winning it, that home comfort (and having your regular routine) really probably makes the difference.

Rogue successfully hiding his spire, getting 10 mutas out unimpeded and then still dying to a push that had 1 unit able to shoot up is a hilarious start.

Wtf was that Maru, was he afraid of playing herO or something?
Why go for such a risky build in g5
Gg Cure, Hopefully the finals is not too one sided
But SKT best KT, T1 herO is probably gonna win 4-1

nice gg timing from Cure. Sitting on 3 base with a couple patches left vs a herO who has every single base on the map

Wasn't Neeb the last foreigner to make deep runs in GSL?

I forget but I remember him making the Ro4, perhaps on his first attempt?

Which was an inspiring result, given the maturity of play and relative competitiveness of the time.

Yes, that is correct. Scarlett and Reynor managed to advance up till ro.8. only while trying more than once. Neeb and Jinro are the only two foreigners who were able to break into semifinal on the first attempt.

I remember him arriving in Korea and getting #1 on ladder soon after, which was pretty insane at the time too.

Closer than it looked, but herO got that nerves factor in his favor by now - he can't be phazed by things going wrong, as opposed to his opponents it seems. Caught myself cheering for Rogue in the end, but alas. herO has ice in his veins and thus has another championship secured. Hope there's still gonna be GSL on the new patch! Wonder how and if that's gonna shake things up.
