Is GSL that Special that Even in its reduced format the top foreigners disappoint? I thought herO + Clem was a given in this group Otoh SHIN beat Maru after 33 series losses so that’ s the beauty of StarCraft

Damn it Clem! ayayay. I would never expect him to finish last in this group. He did so well in qualifier. Especially he was favored against Cure, I thought. Every good foreign player that tries gsl, seems to be somehow cursed by default. The more kudos to Scarlett, Neeb for reaching playoffs. am still so unsatisfied Serral has never tried.

Imo that also shows that all these statements that player xyz would do well in gsl is nothing but talk as the tournament always manages to prove that it just isnt that easy.

I thought herO + Clem was a given in this group Otoh SHIN beat Maru after 33 series losses so that’ s the beauty of StarCraft G1: Clem goes for 4 gate blink against 2-base push from Cure. Clem gets a good backdoor attack into the main before recalling back, but gets wrecked when he tries to clear out the Tanks sieging him. Cure wins with follow-up attack. G2: Clem plays Charge-first with Immortal and beats a different version of 2-base all-in. G3: Cure plays for Mine-drop into another Marine-Tank push but there's a 3rd CC behind it this time. Clem's charge and zealot warp-in are just barely too late to stop his third base from going down, and he's screwed from there.

But it is what it is and so we are likely to get some set of the usual suspects in the playoffs. Let's see if Shin can repeat his success against Maru tomorrow.

Massive respect to the chad Clem for trying, his reaction made me feel super sad for him. Hope he doesn't give up and tries again.

I guess at this level everything can happen in bo3, plus knowing your opponents in advance help players prepare accordingly. Maru is still somehow the best / 2nd best terran in the world even when playing shaky, impressive

He has been trying for a couple of times before (I think 4th or 5th times attempt already?). His best record was ro.8, same like Scarlett did.

His best record was ro.8, same like Scarlett did. It’s kinda baffling they can’t get it done. Not necessarily win, but make a deep run. The prep aspect is much diminished. The tournament is much more compact time wise than it used to be, so you don’t have to be based in Korea for ages. There’s very little explicable reason that top foreigners aren’t performing in this tournament anymore given they can do it elsewhere I think Serral can smack most of the field, he’s got an incredibly strong mentality and consistency, but alas he doesn’t seem interested. Reynor’s got a comparable peak and Clem’s got an arguably higher one, but their floor isn’t nearly as good. Maybe that’s the difference maker

Koreans seem to do relatively better in KR vs foreigners, roughly about the same amount as foreigners do relatively better outside KR. When it comes to say Cure, Maru, or herO getting to a international top 4 or top 2 but not winning it, that home comfort (and having your regular routine) really probably makes the difference.

Why go for such a risky build in g5 Gg Cure, Hopefully the finals is not too one sided But SKT best KT, T1 herO is probably gonna win 4-1

I forget but I remember him making the Ro4, perhaps on his first attempt? Which was an inspiring result, given the maturity of play and relative competitiveness of the time.

Scarlett and Reynor managed to advance up till ro.8. only while trying more than once. Neeb and Jinro are the only two foreigners who were able to break into semifinal on the first attempt.

I remember him arriving in Korea and getting #1 on ladder soon after, which was pretty insane at the time too.
