Despite the games being fun to watch (Battlecruisers excepted), I can't help but feel disappointed. The winningest GSL player in the world wins another GSL. It's become so routine that you could probably look back to the last four or five GSLs Maru won and see me make the same complaint.

Well, can't blame the guy for winning, it's what he does and what he's supposed to do.
I bear this sig to commemorate the loss of the team icon that commemorated Oversky's 2008-2009 Proleague Round 1 performance.

I mean, in super smash bros melee, the « GOAT » at the time and one of the gods Armada, actually retired because winning didn’t even make him feel anything anymore. Thankfully for Maru, he still hasn’t won an official world championship, so he can use those easier GSL to practice and has something to look forward to, while taking some $$$ to the bank.

I bet he wouldn’t bother anymore if he won Katowice, which would be a shame for us viewers

For me it’s the overall field being a lot thinner and necessitating these format changes too

Still good but not quite the same

Ironically, should he crown himself World Champion at the EWC...it's still technically a tournament in Asia :D

Doesn’t matter much if the tournament is in Asia, Europe or US (or Africa) though? The competitive field is what ultimately matters, as well as competitive integrity (lol at the offline tournament in SA with ping, what a joke)

Does it matter? No, of course not. But it would just be "one of those stories" if hit happens to align that way

Can't help but feel disappointed whenever I remember that GSL ro4+finals is on the same day. Really takes away from the finals-feeling and the extensive preparation that goes into each map. Guess we have to be thankful for what we still get but man it really ain't much. Another uninspired Maru win sigh

I quite enjoyed the semifinals, particularly the way the players tried to adapt to each other. It felt like herO looked at how Stats won game one and changed his style completely. Maru brought something really new to his games against Cure, and Cure seemed like he was on the verge of figuring it out, but Maru managed to pull it out with a bit of magic. The micro and positioning Maru displayed in that series was pretty insane.

The first couple sets of the finals were also great, with both players showcasing their skills in micro and decision-making. It definitely felt like herO started to tilt at the end, but that tends to happen when people are down to Maru in GSL finals. It just starts feeling inevitable. I'm not that disappointed with Maru winning GSL again, because he does consistently bring new styles and ideas, and is just an exciting player to watch overall, especially those defensive games when it feels like he's on the edge of dying for minutes on end. I thought this was one of the more exciting seasons of GSL in a while, in terms of the quality of the games.

Yeah it’s a bit weird. Those were some good finals and tighter than the final score would indicate and there were some fantastic skirmishes with both players microing their hearts out. herO was genuinely pretty unlucky in the one set he missed Maru’s move out, while doing a pretty clever infiltration with blink stalkers which Maru also totally missed.

Good season overall too. Protoss had a good showing and thankfully I don’t believe it’s because they’ve been overbuffed. Just enough tweaks via patch and maps to make PvT a little less brutal, and PvZ’s in a decent spot currently. Stats and iirc Classic played very well to emerge from groups and in the former case to advance further, and we all know about herO’s PvZ if it’s called upon.

On the flipside it doesn’t feel that Zergs are disadvantaged in the matchup either, it really strikes me that a combination of who shows up in better form that day, with a better plan, or gets that little bit of luck can win. Miss a move out, or fail to scout that tech building can be the margin, rather than the matchup being favoured innately in either direction.

Thinking back I had a blast this season, but it still felt a bit hollow, I’ve been pondering why. Nothing to do with Maru winning again really now I think of it. All to do with a relative handful of players now I think are capable of beating Maru in a long series. I mean that can happen, peak Flash was rather good.

Stats has really stepped up lately, but honestly I think Maru would have eviscerated him if he’d beat herO. As he did to Classic, I think games would have followed a similar pattern. It’s really only herO’s madcap aggressive style and mixing it up that gives Maru problems in longer PvT series. Of other players in the field, as fantastic as Dark is Maru’s strengths and style generally hard counter him these last couple of years, Shinrags is very good but does anyone see him beating Maru in a Bo7? Etc

But with Flash there was something of a magic in just how good he was, because there was nobody missing from the field. Yeah a bit if ‘oh Flash won again’ but also that ‘holy shit this guy is good’ sense of awe. GSL these days is really plainly missing two players who absolutely can beat Maru, one of whom recently dismantled him and has a very strong H2H against him.

Ah it’s not going to happen, and if rumours are true next season may be the last, but man even if it’s just a last hurrah it’d be fantastic to see a big foreign presence again.

I know Reynor is like confirmed for next season, he’s said other foreigners are seriously considering it but never dropped names (which I agree with otherwise those individuals would be fielding endless questions). Serral can’t because military, even if he wanted to.

If it’s even a couple of foreign big hitters I think it’ll bring a bit of hype back for next GSL season. Reynor on paper is a title contender, Clem too although I think less likely. A Showtime or Heromarine could conceivably go a few rounds, and at worst they’d raise the standard of the Ro16

You're right about there not being real challengers to Maru. He's won 4 of the last 5 championships, and been in 5 of the last 6 finals. The one where he lost in the first round felt like he barely showed up. The loss of TY and Rogue has definitely hurt the most. They always felt like they could beat anybody, and particularly challenge Maru. Without them, Maru feels a definite head above the competition. It's still exciting to watch him win (and I'm a bit of a fanboy), but I can see why it would turn people off.

If the next season is the last, it's been a damn good run. Here's hoping Reynor (and maybe even a returning Rogue?? though maybe he's not truly Back yet) can make it even more exciting.

I imagine if GSL does end, there's still gotta be an online Korean ESL tournament, right? Prize-pool wise, that would be better for the players, but it would be a shame to lose the icon that is the GSL.

If ESL can keep going, then GSL will probably continue as well base on crowdfunding support. ESL doesnt have to pay the production cost and prize for KR region so they can save money there.

Enjoyed the games but I really miss the dynamic of what artosis brought to the broadcast. That's not to say State is a bad caster but I feel like Tasteless and him feed into one another too much and analysis of the games gets lost in the hype.

Cure Maru Game 1 was extremely exciting but the constant Maru praise even when Cure was on the comeback (or identifying HOW he can come back when he's got 2/2 bio and even on air attack vs armor) was rough to listen to, especially in contrast to the ASL cast.

I love Maru but I was sad to see such a cool game get drowned in hype. Congrats to the champ!

Putting ANY combination of casters in place of Artosis and Tasteless is going to feel like a downgrade long term. I think State and Tasteless do a good enough job of keeping the cast entertaining, but to say that there's something missing without Artosis being there is pointing out the obvious.

If ESL would have to take over, I kind of assume they would abandon the Korean Region altogether and just include it into APAC. ESL doesn't really feel like they have any interest in the korean market across the board, so I don't see them picking it up just for SC2.

Less so the fact that artosis isnt there and moreso that there is very little analysis occuring in the current casts (which happens to be the void he left). There is so much more to a cast than "wow I can't believe how good Maru is" and "guys I think we're going to see GG any second now"

Some analysis would be great, because when my untrained eyes watch those games and I see Hero doing all kinds of cool, technical micro stuff only to still lose to what looks like (yes I know it probably isn't) Terran A-move really puts a damper on things.

I guess Flash sort of had a similar inevitability to him too, is it just godly macro? I feel like I must be missing something.

State brings it in spades when there’s a Protoss involved and especially in PvP to be fair.

It’s like he brings better analysis than Artosis in terms of specifics and depth in that scenario, but then does a fair bit less in other matchups. Why that is I dunno but that’s a pattern I think is there, although I also must stress I think he’s doing a good job.

State doesn't play the other races, that much is obvious to me. He's a Protoss player through and through and when Protoss is involved his increased enthusiasm as well as his game knowledge and confidence in articulating that game knowledge all get raised in very noticeable ways.

Artosis is a different kind of caster. While he played Protoss in SC2 and Terran in Brood War I believe he gets nearly all of his game knowledge from dilligently studying pro matches. He watches tournaments he isn't casting (which is something Tasteless notably doesn't do) and is very good at being able to analyze the patterns he sees from watching a lot of games, and due to his long career there's few people I can think of that have probably watched as much as Starcraft 2 as he has.

I don't know if State will be able to apply the same kind of tactical thinking he uses when casting Protoss with the other races simply because I think he draws so much from his own playing experience in his commentary. It's possible that he can grow as a caster this way either by doing more playing of Terran and Zerg or learning to analyze game footage the way Artosis does.

IMO him and tasteless take turns on play by play a little too frequently without zooming out to look at the bigger picture. Can't have two of those in a broadcast, the color commentary should compliment the play by play and vice versa. State is doing a good job but their dynamic has a lot of room for growth.
