He needs to be on top at Riyadh, not keep collecting GSL trophies. Still, the goat doing goat things I guess, casually destroying every top KR player I dont think Maru was peaking much here, hes just doing his things and win. To be fair, herO screwed up more than Maru beat him. Yeah, but that’s problematic too imo, he needs to come as « weak » Maru for worlds oh don't worry he'll manage to find a way to be eliminated in the group stage of some tournament by Bly and Erik or something

Another local trophy for Maru. Have to see if he can finally win something meaningful internationally or else he will never surpass rogue or serral (probably never will)

Dreamhacks not "meaningful" enough for you? Let's also not forget for the vast majority of SC2's history Korea represented the highest level of play, so to call it "another local trophy" is clearly the bias in you talking.

So when Serral or Clem won all those EU title, are those just "local trophy"? Hell, that means Clem has never won anything meaningful until his ESL Winter title last year.

Yes. Regional titles are meaningless

One sided matches but almost all very fun games.
A bunch of crazy micro battles in the finals instead of the usual TvP tank pushes/allins deciding everything, and Maru pulling out skyterran builds for the TvT was sick

G8L ? OMG He can't stop winning.
|
G9L for the possible final season of GSL? Maru literally beat GSL as a single-player game when we run out of single-digit abbreviations for his accomplishments.

Any international tournaments > GSL for the last couple of years.
Sorry to bust your bubbles, but any tournament that has Serral competing is the golden standard, been like that since 2018.
It’s good Maru keep collecting these local trophies, let us know when he wins one world championship. Most of the time , it’s his peers that upsets Serral in these big tournaments, and yet Maru still manage to choke and not win any world championship. Ie when Oliveira dominated Maru

There are only a handful of real contenders in the current scene, Oliveira was a fluke (power of the crowd) but otherwise it’s mostly the same 3 or 4 players, and they have little chance of getting upset by the other players Whereas back in the days there were dozens or more players capable of upsetting the favorites

International tournaments are the pinnacle of SC2 for the last few years, sure. But not since 2018, Serral was winning finals against Has in 2018. Maru won 5 Starleagues before Serral became the consensus world's best player.
You can also simply look at who they had to beat to judge how 'meaningful' a win is. Serral won Blizzcon taking out sOs, Zest, Rogue, Dark, and Stats for example. Maru went an entire year without losing to any of them in GSL.
He also still won GSL when Reynor, Neeb, and Special (the #2,#3, and #4 foreigners at the time ) where playing in it. GSL has never been region locked, hardly a 'local trophy'

Maru wins an 8th GSL TL uses it as an opportunity to talk about Serral and the status of ESL vs GSL

Even though hero made some flubs, I still always enjoy watching him play. GGs!

Maru is the best player in Korea by a solid margin, and has been since Rogue left. I expect G9L unless Reynor reaches peak form again soon (or Dark gets a father buff.)

I just catch up the games.... I wanted the fairy tale of Stats winning a GSL after the military, instead I got GOAT vibes from Maru.... he just flows with the game, its not even clever build orders or preparation. He just has an intrinsic understanding of the SC2 engine and he just flows with it.

Fun finals, some pretty damn good games but alas for us Protoss bros
Btw does anyone know how the Patreon sub works with replays? Can you get older reps or is it a sub for this season get this season kind of deal?

Maru has lapped the field. 8 GSLs and his closest competitors only have 4. For KILs overall it's even more severe. He has 10 and his closest competitors still only have 4. Just makes it even more crazy that he's one of if not the only top Korean who has never won an event outside of Asia.

To be fair Maru did win a couple of Dreamhacks, KoBs, etc. but yes the lack of a Blizzcon/Kato championship is a crazy outcome - not that two silvers in a row are "bad", it's just that we know how good he is at this game and to his fans anything other than a championship feels like an under achievement.
Hero didn't play well in the last few games of the finals, perhaps he was trying too hard to avoid playing late games vs. Maru and got tilted when things didn't work out.
Cure's 3rd game was another one of those legendary Maru comebacks - despite Cure's stated intention to treat Maru as "just another Terran player" he clearly still has a hard time doing so.

All the other events Maru won that you're referencing were online unfortunately. He's legitimately only won while in Korea besides WESG which was only a few hours away by plane. I think it's pretty clear his overseas results were initially a poor travel issue combined with occasional bad bracket luck plus only playing in the hardest internationals but gradually became a mindset issue where he is in his own head about his lack of ability to win one.
