What is he doing wrong?
Nothing, that's just the state of the meta. It doesn't help that Dark's ZvT is pretty much as close to perfect as humanly possible either though.
That was my impression too but it seems that there are a lot here who think he is playing like shit but no one has actually identified anything Maru did wrong.
Mainly he got unlucky and maybe too predictable. Dark (as so often when playing top players..) gambled heavy on Maru builds and won : fast mutas (ground upgrades are one whole cycle late) vs banshee opening, and 45 drones ravagers/glings pressure vs BC build.
It's two BO win if scouted. Thing is, it's actually hard to scout if Z plays it right (lings circling the hellion to poke T wall just before roach move out, fake evo not upgrading, etc.)
TLDR : Maru played at his level, like the best Terran ever at SC2. But it's enarly the worst meta+maps ever + Dark gambled and was lucky.

Serral faced soO.
Maru faced Dark.
Go ahead and talk to me some more about how the brackets were even.
Oh yea, Serral gets superior brackets because he is the #1 point earner because he plays in WCS.
Oh yes. Totally fair seeding. TOTALLY fair.

Serral got soO because 6-0d the group him and Maru were in.
Maru got Dark because well.. he lost to TIME to start.
Easily disputed. Serral got matched vs 0-6 Stats first and Maru got matched vs Time who took a game off Serral first.
Why? Seedings.
Clearly, Time was a much stronger player in that group.
Time did not take a single game off Serral, lmao. And if you want to claim that Stats was the weakest player in that group a priori, show your liquibets for that day.
I haven't cast a single liquibet since I got annihilated at the GSL vs the World.
How's that for an answer? No point in trying to win anymore after how that tournament went.

Funny because Serral's ZvZ was the peak viewership so far.

Or Dark was just a superior opponent. A superior opponent who played last and is in a much tougher bracket due to how poorly the system is set up.
We don't know yet, because the tournament isn't over yet.
Dark seemed to have Maru figured out with his build choices in game 2 with an impeccable Muta timing, and in game 3 with roach ravager timing vs BC opener. It made Maru look pretty helpless but imagine Maru opened with double banshee in game 3 instead of BC. Very different game.

That's why the balance team is ok with the imbalance, people are more about themselves than the fun provided. And European can win with a race (because of the lack of the mechanics of the mean race) they are ok.

Getting in the group of death to then getting in a zvz to soO is bracket luck for sure x) Maybe, just maybe, Maru aka "the greatest player in the world" should have beaten TIME to get this chance.

If you want to go back a few pages, I called that already.
Dark was the hardest opponent Maru could have drawn in this round, because Dark's ZvT is something Maru's trademark brand of ZvT isn't that good against.

Serral got soO because 6-0d the group him and Maru were in.

Clearly, Time was a much stronger player in that group. AND! because Time had Maru first he had much more time to prepare for him, and preparation is clearly one of Time's stronger suits as a player.
Serral 6-0'd his group. Or did we watch different games?
Your point? Serral won vs the 0-6 Stats in the first round, then beat TIME who clearly used all of his prep time on TvT?
These arguments are so easy to counter. This is why I hate how it went. I want undisputed champions, not champions that continue to get strung along by bracket luck and game balance.
Serral's big wins. Big asterisks for me.
Maru and Serral played the exact same two players. Maru lost a series against one of them, Serral did not drop a map. Your argument is that... what, TIME is better than Stats? That he's better at or has more experience with preparation tournaments despite Stats constantly playing and going deep in GSL? That TIME was a better player because he took a map off Serral while Stats didn't (factually untrue)? I honestly don't see your argument. The idea that TIME spent all his prep time on TvT and somehow that makes Serral's run disputable is pure speculation and a pretty insane level of mental gymnastics.

I would do without liquibets, just show the evidence for your opinion on Stats being the weakest player in that group not being the conclusion of Captain Hindsight.
In regards to Maru vs Dark, Bly on Russian stream actually made a nice note that Dark was quite literally reading him like an open book including 2 blind counters and 1 game where he simply played understanding that he would not be contested in spite of no scouting to suggest so. This also explains why Maru looked so subpar in the process, it is literally a repeat of last year's sOs vs Maru where sOs simply countered whatever Maru was doing without looking.

Maybe the whiners should just say which units zerg is allowed to build. Apparently they're not allowed to punish a turtling player with the only option they have to do that, they're not allowed to attack when they see a weakness, they're not allowed to harass undefended positions and they're not allowed to build a deathball.
Oh well, just the usual wheel of balance whine I guess.
Buffing banelings was very suspect, especially just because ByuN was successful?
Only Byun wins with reapers -> time for an immediate balance patch! Only Maru wins with Ravens -> time for an immediate balance patch! Serral wins with infestors -> Zzz Every Zerg wins almost everything ever, professional zergs admitting they're OP -> Zzzzzz
