You can always lose to stupid bullshit, Life is running the risk of getting 2nd no matter what, he's running the risk of PartinG getting 2nd place in D no matter what etc. Don't make the matches for the Ro8 before the groups are played. And the fact that he kept Maru in his group, therefore eliminating him from his side of the bracket, shows me he respects him as an opponent more so than Dream, ByuL etc.
There was no way he could avoid all herO, PartinG and Maru in his half of the bracket completely anyway, but he could make sure to get rid of Maru, and that's what he did.

I think his joke was that we'd have a Ro4 very similar to last season's GSL (Life vs herO, PartinG vs eSF Terran)

The bracket and results were the exact same from Ro8 on, with Bbyong replacing TY, Bomber replacing MMA and ByuL replacing Solar, yes.
