Top GM is a correlation, not causation to how skillfull you are. Many top GM NA players could or could not be good but because of the low saturation of tournaments on this continent, you are much less likely to see them in top form. For instance, in Demuslim's case he was a top ladder player when he went into NASL 4 where he went 2-3 against Violet, a player who got runner-up in the hardest tournament of 2012. But beyond that his peak skill and available tournaments meant he probably never showed his best play whenever he was in form due to bad timing or his own nerves.

Whereas you look in Europe and the best players on ladder often show a lot of strength during the big lan or WCS EU events because there are more of those so their peak conditions line up better.
