Your desire to refrain from calling the "Americans" is completely understandable but trying to tell others not to use the term "American" for people of the US when they are speaking English is just wrong and daft.
You can call them "US people" or something like that, but it's not the same type of national identifier. You'd have to always say "US American" or something like that.
Basically, this goes way back to an annoyance that they even called their country the United States of America, right? They don't own every single American (North, Central and South) country or territory, so not all American lands are United.

Trying to force people to change the way they identify a country after over a thousand years, in THEIR language is not going to work.
