Is it so that games are not being lost on purpose? It's not really a group system, it's an double elimination bracket with first two players advancing

Is it so that games are not being lost on purpose? It's the GSL group phase system, basically a double-elim mini bracket. The advantage is that you always have a fixed amount of games played, so unlike round robin you avoid tie breakers.

First few seasons of GSL then he withdrew from GSL and left Korea and then returned to get a Code S invite awhile later which he took and lost his way out rather quickly.

Nothing is ever set in stone. Those conspiracy theorists were pretty sad. Whether or not things are set in stone is pretty irrelevant to whether or not it would ever be rational to throw a game in this format. It's easy enough to construct reasonable probability distributions for which it would give you the best chance. Nothing being set in stone is pretty relevant to whether or not you throw a game. In any kind of competition where luck and skill go hand in hand, no matter what the probabilities are, it's incredibly risky to even try to throw games. I don't understand what the point about luck and skill is. If you're talking about the added risk of getting caught then, yeah, that's worth considering. But solely from the vantage point of maximizing your chance of winning, going to probabilities still allows for optimal strategies of throwing. For instance, suppose you have 100% chance of winning the winners match if you try (unrealistic, but winners match probability doesn't matter for this point) and a 30% chance of winning the ro16 match that results from that win. Next suppose a 70% chance of winning for both the losers match and the ro16 match that results from that win. Then you would increase your chances of making the ro8 from 30% to 49%. You're still more likely than not to lose with this strategy, but even if one tried it and failed that wouldn't show that it is irrational. And it certainly wouldn't show that it is in principle irrational to throw games if you're only goal is winning the tournament.
