Tbh it was the patch which buffed their shields that made them popular, it's just sage and JYP were the ones who got to scream FIRST on doing it not really that much of an innovation given that they were practically told to do it by that patch.

I just love how, just because Rain won, ALL the Kespa players are "so much better", etc etc etc. Rain is really, really good, I won't deny that...but he's the ONLY one of the Kespa players who is. Roro is decent too, but not code S level.
