less noteworthy games on day 1 due to the new format
we didn't get any games from the heavy hitting fan favorites like hero, taeja, stephano, etc.
also mkp being in the open bracket

According to Wheat (who was all for this style on ItG iirc) this was supposed to make for more exciting day one and make it less inconsequential to the viewers because people could be eliminated from WB with one loss. To me, it had the reverse effect. I think I watched maybe two full games before switching to the WCS stream because every single match felt like it didn't matter where if it were a round robin group stage, I tend to watch to see how certain players currently stack up vs other top players and watch a story kind of unfold. I mean, watching Socke beat DRG last season and potentially come out at the top of his group was pretty awesome (he ultimately failed after losing to SaSe iirc, but still... the story was there).

I wonder if MLG was banking on Kespa players coming to this event and hyping it that way . . . either way, each event is getting less activity on the TL forums. I can't possibly see how MLG is growing viewership with SC2 (as they claim) when things are so drastically reduced here?

Ya, this MLG is kinda yawn-worthy for the first day at least. The only full matches I actually watched were WCS ones. xD

Just noticed with only 150 pages. This is the lowest Championship event posted thread I've ever seen. No one cares anymore like with TSL?

MLG better put MKP on the free streams.......will get many more viewers

This MLG has no hype, there's not enough big name players and we just came off of IEM which set the bar really high for gameplay, Mvp made that event into one of the best we've had all year game-play wise. I've been enjoying WCS NA a lot but the actual MLG event today was really boring to me.
Same here only series I really watched of MLG was Grubby vs Rain. Otherwise my main focus was on watching WCS as the bracket was more interesting. Oh and also stalking twitter for open bracket results XD

MLG Day 1 had barely any interesting series. Normally its alot of group play and we get to see some really good games from everywhere in the groups. Today it was like what 1 group? 1 series had some sort of story to it (Grubby vs Rain seeing how Grubby is fairing against koreans) Otherwise WCS had more hype I feel with the player pool (not to say the groups for MLG are not interesting just today's play wasnt) It was more just how will IdrA fair and is he getting back into his old shape of playing really well and winning games? (He showed that during the last few WCS games for the night) Can HuK show that he's still a force at all in tournaments? (as his results are kind of lacking lately) Will Scarlett continue to dominate WCS as she did in WCS Canada? Major, Suppy, Ostojiy (among other known names) how far will they make it into the bracket? Will ViBe be able to make it far considering he won WCS US nationals?
Just alot more story type deals for day 1 of WCS then there really was for MLG imo.

I don't think it's just the players involved... people are waiting for HoTs IMO, or they've moved on from SC2 sadly.

Pool play was indented to provide matches for the first day. I have no idea why they choose the new group format where they have to wait for the open bracket players.
And for the open bracket matches we didnt even get a bracket for a long time.

I think the longest TL threads came back during Columbus 2011, and that was because there were no games being played, and people posted on TL to pass the time.

I dont care much for results or just looking at liquidia to see how a player did and then making judgements based on that..
Im saying grack is back based on the games and his play looked seeeeeeeexy. I remember one of the MLGs when he played bomber and those games were incredibly amazing and his play for a while now has not really looked like that.
But today its looked crisp, the way he was spreading out his broodlords against insur making the mothership vortex usless and the drone spread against majors 8+ hellion attack resulting in losing only 3-5 drones against 8+ blue flame...
I do agree winning a few best of threes against other north americans doesnt warrent complete celebration but just looking at his play it looks solid enough to win games against anyone.

nobody cares because too many small names, not enough zomg code sssuuuu Koreans

And is it just me or was the format super confusing? For MLG I mean. Just a clusterfuck of brackets.

Didn't think about that. Makes sense. Having those 8 KeSPA seeded players playing today would've made the matches today very hype and interesting. With the way things panned out... the players potentially coming out of the open bracket (MKP, Crank, TheStC, etc.) will be much harder opponents for the high-seeded players than the low-seeded pool players.
Also, I don't like how we really have no idea whats going on with the open bracket. We got results, but no bracket. Its just an open right now with a shit ton of players and games being played, we don't really know whose gonna potentially face who for spots.

Yeah i think the lack of posts is mostly due to the fact no one had any idea what was going with the open bracket other then the tweets that MLG was puting out.
Also the new format makes it so the big name players in group stage dont play on the first day.

This is the second MLG event in a row that I had no idea was going on till I saw day9's FB message saying going live in x mins. It's getting dam near impossible to tell when tournaments are happening their needs to be a better way for events to hype themselves other than hoping their thread doesn't get buried on TL.
On another note doesn't MLG normally have brackets on their site/stream?

Why did they change the format? I didn't mind the group stage combined with the open bracket.
|
Honestly, I blame MLG for not getting MVP/DRG/MC... ect. MC alone brings in that many more viewers. MVP is a show on his own. People will tune in to watch MVP play a potato. DRG just is that Zerg favorite. Play zerg, you love DRG.
The biggest name is MarineKing... AND WE DIDN'T GET TO SEE HIM PLAY. We got players like Sasquatch in the championship bracket while Marine king has to play a shit load of games to get there.
It's ok... once Marine king is in the finals with Taeja... ratings will skyrocket.
