The MOBA scene has recently exploded within the esports world, and the game leading the pack is Riot's League of Legends. Known for its fast paced gameplay and teamwork oriented battles, League is sure to be a crowd favorite. Sporting eight of the world’s best teams, the GESL is guaranteed to have some amazing matches. Arranged into groups for pool play and then seeded into a single elimination bracket, teams will have to be on the top of their game throughout the event to take the top spot. In addition to the teams, there will also be casters on-site to capture every play and decision for the audience.
Spectators who are lucky enough to make it in person will have the chance to mingle with the pros, get autographs, and take pictures. Those of you viewing the stream will be pleased to know we have thought of you as well. Games will be casted in crystal clear HD, all for free. All you need to do is relax, grab a drink and some snacks, and enjoy the matches from the comfort of your home. Whether you're a veteran player or just getting into the game, we're sure to have something you'll like.
There really is no need to introduce a game like StarCraft 2. The rightful heir to the RTS empire is here, no esports event is complete without it. We've managed to grab 24 of the best players in the scene and are putting their skills to the test. GESL will feature a hybrid format with group play leading to a single elimination bracket that ensures each game is intense and meaningful.
There is also a little twist for the players; they won't know which group they're in till the day of. That’s right, for the first time, outside of the GSL, there will be live group drawings on stage.
Aside from great games you can also expect plenty of time with the pros for meet-and-greet, pictures, and signings; bringing you closer to the player is our goal. There will also be great casters throughout the event to make your viewing experience that much better as well as some very awesome personalities from the StarCraft community. If by chance you can't make it live don't fret, the event will be broadcast in HD 100% free so you can enjoy the matches no matter where you are. We would also like to announce that there will be in game player cams for each competitor, in addition to the caster stream. We're brining you the fix for all your StarCraft needs.
StarCraft II and League of Legends pros battle live at Cal Poly Pomona for their share of a $21,000 prize pool in the Gigabyte eSports LAN. Taking place the weekend of June 15th-17th the competition will draw hundreds of fans to the live event and tens of thousands of additional spectators on the live HD Broadcast.
In this invitation-only event, 24 Starcraft II players and 8 League of Legends teams will battle throughout the weekend culminating Sunday to crown the Starcraft II champion and top League of Legends team.
The GIGABYTE eSports LAN will feature an array of groundbreaking improvements to enhance the spectating experience both in person and online. Among the enhancements will be live, onstage group drawings for Starcraft II and a live picking and banning room for League of Legends. A dedicated media room for interviews prior to and following matches will allow greater access to players and a higher level of interaction between the gaming pros and their fans.

WCG used to do it every single year... group drawing. They have a group selection show for GSL almost every season afaik... they did it as IESF (multi national BW tournament in 2009 with 50% foreigners 50% koreans). It's actually not unprecedented.

I still think it's probably important for viewers to understand what they are seeing and how the process of drawing for groups works. 100% transparency regarding the process will help I think.

That's pretty awesome. One of the biggest weaknesses of group play is exactly how groups are formulated and the transparency by which that process occurs.

Short story: For the hell of it, I competed in MLG Anaheim last year. x6mystik my first opponent, 2-0's me. Next day, I win 3 losers bracket rounds, only to play mystik again. He sees me and says, "You know you have to win four games this time right?" Proceeds to 2-0 me again. Now we chill together at SoCal eSports LAN events... he's one awesome dude, and a fantastic player, and he really deserves to be on the top of the competitive scene.

In StarCraft 2, he remains the only Foreigner to all-kill a Korean team - taking out Incredible Miracle (including the three-time GSL Champion IMmvp) in GSTL Season 1 - an achievement matched only by Legionnaire from Brood War circa 2003. coL.qxc has what it takes to compete with the best of them.
Graduating in May from Harvey Mudd College, the GESL will be his return to prominence. Kevin Riley is putting the bandana on and getting back in the ring to reclaim his title of the All-American Terran.

Hopefully there won't be losses. We do everything in our power to live within our means for the GESL. For esports to be sustainable, it has to wean off the angel investors and VC money sooner than later. HomeStory Cup demonstrated the possibility; Lone Star Clash perfected the formula; and now Iron Squid reaffirmed the market-space for mid-major events.
If all goes well - we put on a great show, people love it, and it's all done for (comparatively) very little money.

As a team manager, one would think you should know just how much eSports can cost.
When organizing a tournament at a big multipurpose arena type setting in Southern California, with lots of equipment costs, lots of pros to accomodate, casters to pay for, and a staff to hire, one would be inclined to ask how they can afford it all with such a modest spectator fee. $15 is nothing.

It's basically 100% due to the Korean term. The Koreans used the term first, and they set the bar for quality when it comes to big events. Soon enough the word will just be the word. If you came out to an event you'd realize the people playing, casting, organizing and watching don't really care what the terminology is as long as their hobby keeps growing.

You completely misunderstood what I said. I am simply saying that there is no need to specifically place "esports" in the title of an event. I simply cannot see a reason other than "it looks good" or "it sounds good". I am not debating whether or not esports does or does not mean competitive gaming.

I think e-sports is used as a generic term to fill space when the tournament is for more than one game. In this case, it is both SC2 and LoL. Also, the ES (as anyone who plays scrabble will tell you) makes forming an acronym for the event a lot easier. I think that Gigabyte Lan *could* work for a title, but GL is kind of bland, while GESL can be pronounced quickly. I agree with you completely that the term is being beaten into the ground, but I don't see a convenient alternative that works quite as nicely.
Also, awesome news! I'm glad that EG is sending players. I know a lot of people would agree Arizona *wants* to be SoCal, so I think they're a fitting entry. Also they're good contenders to take on some of the Koreans, and both Bryce and Ben are super nice people, so this is a big plus for people that are attending. Looking forwarding to this more and more every day!
looks like its gonna be a great tournament! I hope that theres more than 1 stream because I'll definitely be turning off whichever stream that Destiny is on. Well I have now found a reason to make one of my first post on Team Liquid. I will no longer be watching this event nor do I have any interest in supporting this company since it has now removed Denstiny as a caster. I hope others will follow in this, as it seems the only way to stop people from making more decisions which hurt us as a community.

this is what you get when people who cant handle the internet are in the internet people complaining and policing everything like its there job. Theres a huge difference between a personal stream and professional event come on now u sad cases this is not about racism its just pure hatred for the guy and the fact that they have something to use.
Overall this just hurts esports since people who support destiny can also write a email to those company saying they wont buy and watch there streams due to the fact that he got kicked from the casting job for something that happened on his own personal stream. Also my first post. I think this is a ridiculous response to remove Destiny, and I (and my friends) will not be watching this event. I would consider emailing them as well, but complaining because someone makes a decision you disagree is petty. You are not entitled to get everything you want. If you don't like him, watch a different caster or match. No reason to ruin it for everyone else (I know not everyone likes him, but many do).

If he doesn't cast it seems like a big mistake, with so many tournaments going on now you need to stand out, a pro player casting makes you stick out a bit in my opinion, without destiny it will probably just fall under the "just another tournament".

Exactly. People freaking out about this need to understand this happens all the time in practically every industry that involves public figures. Destiny's opinions are at the very least, controversial, so why would a company take a risk and employ someone like that. It's needlessly risky on their part.
Well, the gesl just opened the hornets nest and now its too late to stop this I think. Destiny has told his fans to complain to them, so they will be bombarded with people threatening to boycott them if they don't bring destiny back. So now they're in a lose lose situation and are getting harassed by both sides. I can imagine this is going to be very frustrating for gigabyte and I think the organizers should have foresaw something like this happening because now the focus is off the tournament and on to the destiny topic again.

But would they be viewed as a company who hired a racist? Maybe by the few who complained, if they are legitimately offended (and let's be honest, it's likely that not all are legitimately offended). Is that enough to ruin their reputation? Seems to me these people are a very small minority.
This is very unfortunate if it's true. I am going down to MLG the week before and the only reason I bothered looking into staying another week was because of Destiny.
Honestly here is my opinion on the matter; Above free speech, morales, and everything: Destiny needs to be more professional; If he wants to maintain his position of "it's my stream, I can say/do what I want" I will still support him and watch him.
However, he jeopardizes his opportunities in e-sports because of this lack of professionalism in this regard. Honestly, I personally don't think Destiny is racist, but the problem is no matter what context, you have people that will get offended and start witch hunts.
It's bad for everyone, for Destiny, e-sports, sponsors, and everyone else, including we the spectators and community. Gigabyte as a company now have both sides of Destiny fans like myself, and those that are against him emailing them, crashing their website, and throwing buzz-words like boycott around.
Ultimately, this benefits no one and undermines the professionalism and growth of e-sports. Destiny isn't necessarily in the wrong in my opinion, but if he wants to grow himself personally into a community figure, he needs to maintain a level of professionalism so you don't see witch hunts.
When I say professionalism, I don't mean keeping it all formal, I mean staying away from words or other arbitrary things that can/do cause controversy.
To summarize, I will personally support Destiny as a fan no matter what, but he needs to maintain some professionalism as a whole if he wants to be a community figure because of the attitude of the e-sports community

I'm not saying we need to make him do anything. I'm saying his life would be much easier if he'd do that. He can stick to his ideals (which is admirable I guess), but this shit will follow him for the rest of his career unless he tries to make amends.
After this uproar events aren't going to bother inviting him to anything. They know that they can't risk an uproar over his racism and they can't risk an uproar over his fans being mad his invitation got retracted. The more complaining people do at this point the more it likely hurts Destiny.

If we were to pick our casters based on past actions on streams we'd also have to talk about Incontrol and IdrA using "faggot" repeatedly. I can see why GIGABYTE wouldn't want to be associated with Destiny, but this is why you vet your casters before selecting and publicizing them.

Yea I'm pretty sure that a lot of people were going to watch this because Destiny was casting, now that he isn't they probably are going to lose a lot of potential viewers including me. I don't even care about the players, the draw to this tournament was Destiny.

I'm not saying we need to make him do anything. I'm saying his life would be much easier if he'd do that. He can stick to his ideals (which is admirable I guess), but this shit will follow him for the rest of his career unless he tries to make amends.

Just sent them an email to tell them my point of view about a vast minority of people sending emails to sponsors to tell them that they wont buy and boycott this company because they support that X person, even tho im pretty sure most of these people dont actually think that this X player did something wrong, they just dont like him for another reason. If you really want to reduce pitchfork wielding in the community you can do so by simply watching and enjoying the tournament, emailing sponsors saying it was fantastic entertainment and not over reacting about anything in the future - INCLUDING Destiny being removed. And I've got no problem with people disagreeing with me on that, or having a different opinion at all. We can all discuss the rights / wrongs of the situation, but calling for boycotts and hurting sponsors even more is ridiculous and ONLY negative for the community.

Destiny has casted some smaller events in the past with great success and always good feedback from viewers. Very professional casting, and also awesome humour and casts well with just about any other type of caster.
You're correct that calling gigabyte's decision immature was flawed. I would call it misinformed without hesitation though.
I will not be watching this tourney due to your shortsighted decision to remove Destiny as caster. He is a genuinely entertaining and appealing caster, partly due to some of his edgier or sarcastic comedy, but mostly due to his deep game knowledge and ability to give insight on what a player is thinking.
A few loud complainers don't represent the whole community's opinion on this. The fact that Destiny has made controversial statements on his own personal stream should have no bearing on the expectation that he can deliver an exceptional cast with professionalism and respectful language. You can argue that it comes down to not wanting someone of his 'reputation' associated with you, but frankly, he represents thousands upon thousands of nerds out there who aren't on the PC bandwagon and actually appreciate humor at the expense of others without taking it too seriously. Using words that have race hate undertones does not a racist make.

No, you shouldn't praise a poor decision. The way to show that it was a poor decision is just to watch something else, and that is what I plan on doing.

I keep seeing posts that say this or that is going to kill esports with regards to sponsors, but the absolute truth is that what is really killing esports is being beholden to sponsors. I understand the costs involved, but until there are teams/tournaments that can stand on their own then they will always be at the mercy of the sponsors.

It's incredible how obsessed people seem to be about hunting down Destiny. Ever thought about writing to Gigabyte because you like a certain caster instead of continously bashing Destiny? Personally I was really looking forward to seeing him cast this tournament, I really liked his comments on Zerg MUs at Homestorycup.

GIGABYTE's decision is stupid, they're shooting themselves in the foot. They are running a very average tournament in regards to players and prizepool. Their only attractive feature to a lot of people is the fact that Destiny would have been casting (not becasue he's controversial... but because he's funny)... GIGABYTE's tournament is going to take a massive hit in viewer numbers; not becasue of people "boycotting", but becasue people will simply hold no interest for the event now that Destiny is no longer going to be casting. I can pretty much assure you that this decision will hurt them more in the pocket than keeping someone who has had a pretty rocky time of late.
If GIGABYTE read this: Destiny is not a liability. He does know the difference between a professional cast and his stream. You're making a moronic decision if you think that he's going to say something that is going to get you in trouble with sponsers.

Well, if all it takes is 3 emails, then I am sure some will try to tear everything down in one night emailing all the sponsors, all of them, attempting to discredit each and everybody they don't like ... Where is the future in all of this? Hard to see it if people continue to do this, if organizers have no spine (hire someone they know is controversial, fire him only if someone complains), and if big sponsors are influenced by emails of people, where I am sure many of them haven't bought one of the sponsors' products in their whole lifetime but clamining to do so to be more forceful.

If you're going to announce him as a caster for your event, at least look into what kind of character he is prior. With the number of high quality tournaments (with better line-ups than this) about atm people don't just watch everything. My post simply stated that Destiny was a major selling point for a lot of people, and that with him gone a lot of people will have lost interest.
And FYI, I'll still probably watch this tournament.

Bringing up post count wasn't one of my best decisions today but you gotta admit, if you check, most of people who came here to just say they won't watch this tournament because of no Destiny are low post count members, you can't deny that pattern.
I am glad you will still watch the tournament, I have strong feeling this event is going to be epic and I hope for amazing players to be yet announced. :-)

Biggest issue I see is GIGABYTE's lack of research before they announced Destiny as caster, they should've had all the facts before making agreement with him - you don't put company and person you contracted in situation like this, where you find out pretty public information via e-mails of enraged peers and then kick your employee out of the gig without official statement (was there any?).
Btw all of you ~50 posts Destiny fanboys can say whatever you want, but this tournament is damn packed with nice players (even if they announced only half of players for now), decent casters and prize pool.

I'd like to stress that I'm pretty indifferent about the GIGABYTE thing, I just think they balls'd up (attempting to look at it objectively). I was just annoyed at the dozens of people saying things like ~ "Good, now I can watch a racist free tournament" and stuff of that nature, basically just mindless hating.
As for the tournament, watching Scarlett play will be cool. Haven't seen much of her since watching her MLG match against Oz.

Through his interactions on stream with Cella, Debo and other members of minorities, never once did he display a intolerance toward these people.
If anything I think the people behind the e-mails are biggoted themselves for their intollerance to Destiny as a person. Here we have an individual who has through the support of a generally welcoming community brough himself up by his bootstraps and become a somewhat promiminant figure and gets to play a game he enjoyrs for a living.So much so that a tournament knowing his history chose him to help cast a tournament and instead of giving the guy his due and a chance to redeem himself these people have come out against him.
We can assume both gigabyte and the tournaments organizers knew going in what Destiny's history going in and for them to summarily dismiss him like becaus of the vocal minority is wrong. These FEW people, and I emphasise the word FEW because we can assume--and correctly so-- that the majority of people who intended to watch this tournament either supported Destiny casting or did not care one way or another and just wanted to watch some quality e-sports action. For them to change their minds like that is wrong to Destiny and wrong to their viewers.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and the right to express it, they're just not always right. When you let the vocal minority call the shots in broadcasting it takes away from the broadcast as a whole. Lets take some polarizing figures in todays media as examples. What if MSNBC gave into the requests to take Chris Mattews off the air because they dissagreed with his political views? Or an even better example of an even more polarizing figure, What if Fox News decided to take Bill O'Reilley off the air because of the requests they get? These companies get thousands of emails a week telling them to do just that, but have they? No they havent, because they know that if they did they would lose more viewers than if they just ignore the complaints. Not giving the majority of people what they want to see because a small group doesnt want to see the same thing just doesnt click with how we structure our society. It doesnt click with how civilization works. The minority should have a voice and it should be heard, but the majority rules.

Well, if all it takes is 3 emails, then I am sure some will try to tear everything down in one night emailing all the sponsors, all of them, attempting to discredit each and everybody they don't like ... Where is the future in all of this? Hard to see it if people continue to do this, if organizers have no spine (hire someone they know is controversial, fire him only if someone complains), and if big sponsors are influenced by emails of people, where I am sure many of them haven't bought one of the sponsors' products in their whole lifetime but clamining to do so to be more forceful.

Yes, but you should also understand, that if you hire someone for your tournament you also know about their role in the community and what that person has done. The organizers hired Destiny to cast because he is such a fanboy-magnet, fully knowing what he thinks about the world. You're not blindly picking people without knowing about who they are. And if you are a sponsor in Sc2, then I cannot imagine the PR and community guys from that company to not have noticed where the controversy is at.
If you bought a ticked expecting Destiny to cast you should ask for a refund. Also even if you haven't bought a ticked, should still message Gigabyte expressing how dissapointed you are in their decision, that is only if you feel that way ofcourse.

First time poster, long time reader. I am bummed about this. I will not be watching because Destiny casting is the only reason I even heard about this tournament and I have other things I can do with my time (and money).

It's not really gigabyte's fault as they put their trust in the organizers to take care of things while they just provide the sponsorship money. I assume the vetting process is done at the time when the organizers come to them with the idea for the tournament. After that, they leave it in the hands of the organizers to run it. I could be wrong though, but I just don't see gigabyte being up to date on the latest sc2 drama of the week.
Why are people here implying that Destiny would be using racial slurs in the middle of a professional cast at a tournament? He is a shock jock who's goal is to entertain in a very specific way. His fans like his rants and ravings and like any comedian, sometimes he goes too far. But that is done on his personal stream. At a public event? Name an instance where he's done that while casting.

Lots of interesting players that I want to see, though. A few that I'm just not familiar with at all too.
Looks like the main drama with this tournament now though is this Destiny thing. Just based on my knowledge of past instances of this kind of situation, it seems like it would be hard to be surprised. If someone in the public eye uses racial slurs, especially publicly, there seems to always be some punishment. When I imagine any newscaster or sportscaster from television using a racial slur in public, they would certainly be punished. Destiny's removal seems extremely normal, doesn't it? I guess the internet must just make us forget about consequences existing sometimes.

Give me a good reason why an organization such as GIGABYTE would hire someone to cast for their event, who is famous for using and defending his use of language (which includes words like faggot, gay, gook, nigger), when the event has a large Asian fan base?
It was their fault in the first place for hiring him, but they are completely in the right to not let him cast. Destiny is being welcomed to the real world, where you get punished for your actions and can't say whatever the hell you want without repercussions .

Gigabyte received e-mails saying Destiny is a racist. Destiny is most likely not a racist, just someone who has a poor choice in words when lashing out. That is what people are going off about, myself included. I think you have inverted opinions of what is 'right' and 'wrong' in the context of the real world.
Destiny has demonstrated a consistent pattern of behavior over a long period of time. He did not just blow up in 'one game' and get smashed by the community.

Where in his post was he standing up for Destiny's foul language? He pretty much said the same thing I did right above you. He doesn't enjoy the fact that people are now painting Destiny as a full blown racist because of his poor choice of words.

So here is the thing, I dont think that having Destiny as a caster would hurt Gigabyte's ROI, in fact being such a controversial figure he might have actually drawn more views and thus spread product awareness because there is no such thing as bad publicity. That said, i don't think Destiny would make such comments on air while in a casting capacity.
Destiny on his own stream and Destiny in a professional environment. Lets keep in mind that Destiny is streaming his own personal stream from his home enrivronment and as such is giving us unfiltered access to his ladder games, league of legends, etc. He is meanwhile also trying to draw viewers, many of which want to see the rage and his very quirky comedic personality so he has to entertain at the same time. This being the case you can't hold him to the same metric as other public figures in our media today. Hollywood movie stars, television stars, and public figures don't stream hours out of their day to the internet, so what you get a public persona that you see and is very well crafted not to offend anyone. Watching a starcraft II stream is different to this because the streamer is giving you that access and may be trying to entertain an audience at the same time. We do not hold any other caster or player to the same codes as we do these public figures. If we did then, we wouldnt hear the liberal use of the words "fuck", "retarded", "dumbass", or "gay" on their streams. That also includes IMPRESSIONS OF NATIVE AMERICANS cough....cough...Incontrol... because that could be potentially construed as offensive.( please do not white knight)
I will not be watching this tournament, nor will I be buying that Gigabyte gtx 680 i had my eye on on newegg or for that matter any Gigabyte product in the future. I will continue to support Destiny and company that is willing to stand behind him. This is the first time I have activley boycotted any product and it saddens me to do so.

Vote with your wallet and your feet, certainly, but by jumping on this drama bandwagon and getting vocal we are violating two things that should be taboos in esports right now. Firstly increasing sponsor insecurity...people could really use sponsorships from these big companies. Secondly, putting casters on the pedestal. I'm aware Destiny is a player too, but in this tournament he was only supposed to be casting some games. Laughing off the tournament as shit tier because they chose to withdraw one good caster is a huge insult to the guys that are supposed to be the real stars of the event.

I'm not watching this. If they revoke having Destiny as a caster because a tiny group of so-called 'white knights' complained about stuff he said on stream which he subsequentially renounced because it was causing him so much drama and negativity then I will revoke my time that I would have spent watching this event.
The haters didn't even give Destiny a chance to turn over a new leaf, they just went straight over in an attempt to shit all over his reputation.

Not sure if you're being facetious Xeris, but just read this tweet. GESL announcing Destiny as a caster and then removing him is obviously going to cause at least a minute backlash considering the amount of fans that Destiny has.

The destiny situation is really hard, and I am sure its not what the event organizers wanted. Their #1 goal though is to put on an incredible event for fans to see, and if they have no sponsors, they can't put on an event. I have no idea if there was any sort of threat to pull out of sponsoring the event, but if there was, we need to understand that the event organizers would have been put in a loose loose situation, we can't blame them.
That said, the whole Destiny thing sucks. Destiny is actually a really nice guy every time I have had the chance to chat with him at events.
Lets support the event no matter what, and the organizers for putting something like this on for us to see. I'm sure it takes a ton of work.

Of all the teams in Starcraft 2, SlayerS needs the least introduction. Their iconic blue jersey strikes fear in the hearts of their opponents. Ryung, Alicia and Clide are all first class players, each being GSL Code S veterans, they will pose quite the obstacle for all the other competitors.

That image is copyrighted by GOMtv, and even Liquipedia's use isn't authorized, something that we are starting to crack down on in that wiki. You can't just go around using any image you want, especially if you are running events; the results can be ugly. Believe me, I know.
Additionally, the resolution and quality of that image are so low that they are improper for any use besides piracy.

Because of where the GESL staff came from, we want to do some things a bit differently from most tournaments - one of which is respect for photographers.
The SC2 scene suffers from general disrespect for copyright. Often times, tournaments will just pull photos from Google or Liquipedia, without bothering to ask for permission or even giving proper credit. That practice isn't legal, and more importantly, that aint right. For the photographers whom care about their craft, their pictures are their babies. Given what they do for the scene, asking for permission is a courtesy they deserve. Photographers are important part of the scene too!
The GESL staff are pretty much the whole SoCal scene, with quite a few photographers in our mist. So very early on, we decided that all the pictures we use, we'll request explicit permissions from the photographers in question. We credit all the photographers (in the topic) and avoid removing watermarks when possible.
Everyone we approached have been extraordinarily nice so far. Of course, it does means we don't get to use some pictures we'd like to use sometimes, but that's okay. Respect to important part of the community is worth the extra legwork.
The last few invites of our tournament are proving to be quite exciting. We are very proud to be able to announce that three players from the Korean team MVP will be joining the pack at the GIGABYTE ESPORTS LAN Invitational two weeks from now.

TAiLS entered the StarCraft II scene with a bang, taking out the likes of Incredible Miracle's NesTea and MVP in a clutch performance in GSTL Season 1. He hasn't let up since then, winning numerous cups, including a GIGABYTE cup. His most notable performance thus far in this past year has been his strong showing at the IGN ProLeague Season 4.

Dream will be making one of his first foreign tournament appearances at the GIGABYTE ESPORTS LAN, his previous one being his participation in the MLG Pro Circuit Spring Arena 2 just a few weeks ago where he tied for 7th place overall with Inori. Dream qualified for Spring Arena 2 by beasting his way through the lower bracket of the Korean Qualifiers, taking out such notable opponents as Maru, LosirA, and Ryung.

Monster is a strong Zerg and a perennial participant in the GSL. His breakout performance thus far has been his semifinal run at this years Stockholm Dreamhack Open, where he beat top European players Seiplo and Nerchio.

I'm super upset as well been casting a lot of her lately and she is really turning into something amazing. Hopefully a team grabs her soon.

A lot of these up-and-coming players did really well this past weekend, especially in WCS.
Looks like alicia, ryung, clide, tails, monster, dream, violet, and demuslim will all be at the pre party Tuesday night. We will be setting up some fun things too like a photo booth and maybe some team mono battles with the pros. If you haven't bought your pass yet you can get it at the door to get in.

qxc informed us this weekend that he decided to go to Dreamhack over our event. With an open spot to fill, we looked at a lot of players that did well at MLG Anaheim and were very impressed with the run that Daisuki had, making it all the way to the finals of the WCS qualifiers. We think Daisuki will be a great replacement to help represent the US.
so how is this going to go are you guys streaming most of the groups / all of the groups? if so what order will the groups be played in? (i.e.: group a 12-2 pm, group b 3-5 pm, group c 6-8 pm, group d 9-11 pm or something)
and for the other days, when would certain people start/what rounds?

There will be 4 groups of 6 (exact group makeup will be determined in a live draw tomorrow), as stated in the OP. Not sure if every game is going to be streamed. There should be computers for you to play on and practice while you wait. There are three streams, one main stage (which may be sc2 or league depending on whats there) and a dedicated sc2 as well as a dedicated league channel. So potentially there may be two streamed sc2 games going on at one time.

For StarCraft 2 pros, each will have a dedicated practice station that's yours for the weekend. There'll also be a private player lounge by Red Bull for you to nap, snack, and etc.
We want you there at 9 tomorrow because groups are drawn live at 10am, so we can't know for sure what will be your schedule until then.
I realize that it is late .. and this information will only be seen by a few .. but it's important information.
Note, it may be a wall of text for some.. but once I get the pretty graphics made, I will post those up here.
LIVE GROUP DRAW - INFORMATION:
Starting at 10 AM PST on Friday, officially before the start of the event, we will be streaming the Dolby Live Group Drawing. This drawing will be to determine the make up of the 4 groups of 6 players each.
This is an informal production and is meant for transparency on how the groups are decided. All of the players are being asked to be there for this portion of the event. Players will physically be grouped on stage as a visual representation of the groups. Of course, the GESL, CSN and Liquidpedia website will all be instantly updated as the groups are being decided.
Schedules of which matches are being put on the main stage and all other matches will be updated and given to the players so that they may start to prepare. Every player will have their own practice computer for this event.
HOW THE POOLS WERE DECIDED:
Three (3) pools were chosen to be pulled from for the groups. These 3 pools were decided on using the following criteria:
1. Ranking / Past Tournament Results / Player vs. Player results
2. Team Kill possibility
3. Race
Players were first placed in pools based on how a panel of 5 GESL Staff members ranked the players by skill level. This must be and is the main criteria for the pools. Obviously, not everyone will agree with how the pools were tiered, but I imagine that a case can be made for any situation. The next criteria that was considered, was the probability for players to be pulled to the same group that were from the same team. It is likely that players from the same team will end up in the same group. This is something that must be accepted if a true competitive format is used. We have tried though to set Pools #2 and #3 up so that the possibility is less. Race was the final criteria used when deciding the pools. Any chance we had to switch players of relatively equal 'ranking' to avoid a group having too much of one race was addressed.

HOW GROUPS ARE DRAWN:
1 player at a time will be drawn from Pool #1 into Group A, then Group B, etc. This will happen twice for pool #1 until there are 2 players from Pool #1 in each of the groups.
The process will continue with Pool #2 until there are 2 players from that pool in each of the Groups.
Again, the same process will be used to determine the final 2 players drawn into each group.
HOW BRACKET POSITIONS ARE DETERMINED:
Once the group stage has completed, with each player playing each of the opponents in their group (Round Robin Scheduling), brackets will be set based on a very specific bracket methodology. Unlike the World Cup (of Soccer/Football)... these brackets will not be released until the final round of matches come to an end. The reason for this is that the brackets are not re-seeded or rigged for 'viewer/spectator experience'. They are based strictly on how a player finishes in their Group. The better a players' finish in their group, the better 1st round match up they will receive. These match ups are hidden to protect against players 'throwing' matches to gain a more favorable position on the bracket or to help a team mate.
For example: Group A winner vs. Group C 4th place, Group B Winner vs. Group D 4th place, etc...
The players will NOT know the exact bracket setup until the final round of Group Stage matches have been completed. These brackets have been given to Team Liquid, ESFI and Cadred as a safeguard against the perception that the brackets were 'rigged' or seeded to favor certain match ups.
Again, the idea here is transparency and letting results decide the competition and removing 'subjectivity' from the equation.
So.. there is a quick rundown of how the Live Group Drawing will work. Tomorrow, on stream (if I can get up early enough to shave!).. I will explain how the process for drawing the players works.

Not to be mean against Machine but Carriers are awful. DRG stated that when protoss go carriers:Does he want to lose against me?
Machine handled that really badly and Inori wasn't taking him seriously if not he wouldn't be going for triple stargate play.

guys i'm not trying to say they're optimal by any means, i'm just saying they're not quite as terrible as a lot of people would like to say. if you can get a big ball of carriers with decent upgrades and a mommaship you're pretty close to invincible, as we saw in this game. yes, you probably have to outplay your opponent by a decent bit to get to that point though, i acknowledge that.

Yeah that is the point. You have to sit back and wait till you get that ball of carriers and mothership. Any decent player that scouts it would just bust through the front and kill your base.
As for inControl's opinon on players? Meh. When he accepts that he is a caster as Naniwa predicted. Idra is also not very reliable in that regard.

Pre Super Tournament Polt had played 5 whole games of TvP in GSL.
And if you bring up the Asia Champions Tournament which precisely nobody watched or cared about I will 100% know you weren't around the scene then.
Polt's notariety in TvP came after he won the Super Tournament because he beat Huk (a Code S Protoss with good TvP who'd just beaten MMA who we didn't know was awful TvP yet) and Alicia (at the time he was the number one hyped Protoss newcomer set to wash away jobbers like Tester, Anypro and Hongun and considered a PvT specialist).
People then took a lot more notice of the fact he'd beaten MC (because if you remember those games MC was taking huge risks like nexus first and Polt just rushed him so people thought little of it)

It must be nice for EG to have such marketable players that are currently pretty average, even the ones at the bottom of the EG ladder currently still draw viewers whereas the lesser Quantic players... (wait, what are their names? I can't even remember) What use are they to their sponsors?

This is part of my first post on TL, it's me in december 2010 defending OGSTops TvT by using beating Polt as an example as to why Top was good in the matchup.

I've considered Polt a good player from the very start of my GSL-following, not because I'm a super expert, but because it was the general consensus among a lot of people. I hated his ass from january 2011, so I remember very clearly how he was considered from then on. Particularly his TvP and it started before he had results to back it up. Either way, everybody knew and had opinions about Polt before he won the Super Tournament, that's not true for "mediocre" or unknown players. We all saw him coming.
And by that my part in this discussion is over, it has sidetracked too much from the tournament at hand.

I believe lesser known players on major teams like Quantic don't get salary, but they get sent to some events and get paid if they do well or something. It's a good deal for both parties until the player gets to the point where another team will give them a salary.

I assume you get paired by group rankings. So for a matchup of 2 foreigners, one has to get second at least. Maybe Beastyqt or Demuslim. (EU for the rescue)

I agree with you. That's exactly my point. The skill gap is so big when comparing with the Koreans that if Americans don't have their own tournaments the American SC2 pro scene will soon be dead.
There will be at least 1 Group C and 1 Group D match played tonight after the LoL stuff has finished up. May be for a later night, but we do not want to miss good action from Group C and D.
It feels like Inori's tournament. I thought he would get out of groups in first place, but the crispness of his play is exceeding my expectations. I don't see anyone short of Dream/Violet stopping him.

Meanwhile EU scene has 20 players easy who can compete with koreans imo. In general there are more "good" NA players but EU holds the "great" lead by a pretty wide margin it feels like.

poor decision making, giving away free medivacs all game... always go for the army/production in a base race, it doesnt matter if he has more money if he cant produce anything and you have a vastly bigger army ><. To bad, cause I think he could have won otherwise.

Cautious optimism is how I'm feeling, too. We have a lot of players who look like they have loads of potential, but we're not really sure.
Whoever was casting with Axel did a very nice job (along with axel). Enjoyed the Demuslim vs Tails cast very much. Nice job you two. I am very impressed with all the casters, actually. Well done.
There are plenty of strong NA players, right now everyone in NA is developing and improving rapidly, and in the next 5 months or so I think we will start to see some new NA talent up there.
I'm really digging Jorosar's casting. not a lot of aaahhh and ummms and he doesn't try to overhype shit during the game. seems very professional. hearing casters say "beautiful splits" "beautiful micro" when his army is getting stormed to death and losing the battle makes me cringe. "beatiful forcefields" when the protoss has a bunch of sentries and spamming forcefields makes my head shake too.

I would say Dreamhack is the number one reason by far... you can only watch so much SC2 in one weekend, and Dreamhack is obviously one of the best known and most promoted tournaments of the year. Secondly, in my opinion, there have been a few too many games with kinda... "mid-level" players, who don't really draw in viewers. Maybe a shorter group stage, or something would be better next time, or simply having a few better players replacing the lower end guys, which would be a lot easier to do if you weren't on the same weekend as Dreamhack, so you'll probably will be a lot better positioned to draw more viewers next time. Anyway, I'm enjoying the tourney, and I'm glad that Azael is there casting too!

Koreans steamrolling foreigners, downtime, burnout from DH, etc...
For me personally, the casters just aren't my cup of tea.

Nice players, but I just don't know much of the casters. The only really, who I know is DOA, and I like his casting. This tournement was not interesting enough for me this weekend though. Maybe if it didn't happen at same time with Dreamhack. But appearently they still did well, so I hope I'll get to watch it next time
I want to personally thank all of the socal esports staff members and those that volunteered their time this weekend. Even after a rocky start and some issues that popped up that were completely out of our control.. every match was played (with a little jimmy-rigging to get it done!) and the SC2 players especially were very happy with the final results of the event.
Later today on 'Climbing The Ladder', Chris Chan, Mr. Bitter and myself will be talking with Bobby (GESL Event Director) live about the event. I think many of you will be surprised by some of the revelations that come out.
There is always room for improvement and if viewers/fans are always going to compare live events to organizations like MLG and IPL, who have huge budgets and more experience in running live events.. then we all have work to do and that is understandable.
Again.. this event would not have finished a success if it had not been for the hard work of the socal esports group and the extreme support of the Gigabyte reps at the event!
