It's basically 100% due to the Korean term. The Koreans used the term first, and they set the bar for quality when it comes to big events. Soon enough the word will just be the word. If you came out to an event you'd realize the people playing, casting, organizing and watching don't really care what the terminology is as long as their hobby keeps growing.

This looks to be a good tournament. I like the live drawing idea for the group stages, makes things interesting and unique.

I hope the rest of the invites are good.

the KR's did not coin the word 'esports' as far as I know.. I have been using it for longer then 10 years.

Anyway.. good stuff for this event.

esports, esport, eSports, e-Sports, e-sports, ESPORTS, E-SPORT, E-SPORTS = competitive gaming

The term has been in use, on this website at least, for a very, very long time. There is nothing 'narcissistic and annoying' about it except maybe perceptually in your own mind. Its use in the title is not a demand, it is a descriptor. ESPORTS will be had regardless of the title.

And specifically about that last link in the list, something important is said:

In this particular instance, I don't feel as strongly, but this should be good food for thought.

You completely misunderstood what I said.
I am simply saying that there is no need to specifically place "esports" in the title of an event. I simply cannot see a reason other than "it looks good" or "it sounds good".
I am not debating whether or not esports does or does not mean competitive gaming.

I think e-sports is used as a generic term to fill space when the tournament is for more than one game. In this case, it is both SC2 and LoL. Also, the ES (as anyone who plays scrabble will tell you) makes forming an acronym for the event a lot easier. I think that Gigabyte Lan *could* work for a title, but GL is kind of bland, while GESL can be pronounced quickly. I agree with you completely that the term is being beaten into the ground, but I don't see a convenient alternative that works quite as nicely.

Also, awesome news! I'm glad that EG is sending players. I know a lot of people would agree Arizona *wants* to be SoCal, so I think they're a fitting entry. Also they're good contenders to take on some of the Koreans, and both Bryce and Ben are super nice people, so this is a big plus for people that are attending. Looking forwarding to this more and more every day!
Everyone likes to root for the underdog. GO ZERG!

looks like its gonna be a great tournament! I hope that theres more than 1 stream because I'll definitely be turning off whichever stream that Destiny is on. Love DoA though and I miss him on GSL tbh. Anyway I think me and the fiance are gonna move to Cali so I can goto all these badass events that are happening out there lol

Destiny just tweeted this: "Apparently @GIGABYTE_USA doesn't want me to cast at their event because 3 people e-mailed them and told them I'm a racist."

If this is true, come on. Ridiculous. Be better than that Gigabyte. I'm not gonna watch if you're gonna cave to the pressure of a few offended people, some of which might only be complaining as a motive to get Destiny kicked from the line-up out of actual dislike, not out of concern of being politically correct or whatever.
