Hmm..

Grubby vs Snute will be fairly even but Grubby will prevail (if he has a tight early game defense).
Kas vs Bling will be an easy win for the Ukrainian destroyer. I would not mind an upset tho'.
Same with Titan vs Stephano.
I will certainly root for Beastyqt, but Nerchio is showing some crazy good ZvT.

I would prefer at least bo5 when there's only 4 matches, but I'll take what I'll get. :p

Late edit. 7. Seven matches. >.<

The best casting duo in the world in action again, yay!

Grubby vs Snute 2:1, as Snute is known for his early game shinenigans, but Grubby is gosu in defending and never giving up

Kas vs Bling 2:0, since I've been watching Bling's stream recently and I don't think that he can stand against The Destroyer.

Titan vs Stephano 1:2, Titan might win something by doing something unexpected like 4gate or proxy 2gate, but still, Stephano will win the series.

Beastyqt vs Nerchio 0:2, Beasty is good, but not "that good", and Nerchio has one of the best ZvT's in the world, with which he was able to take games from top Korean Terrans like Polt or Jjakji
If you make no mistake, yet still lose - you don't understand the game. Spiral out, keep going.

He also played 4-5 against Jjakji earlier this morning (or at least it was aired then). Very impressive.

Predictions:
Grubby 2 - 0 Snute (I've never seen Snute play, he seems to be relatively new to the scene, or is only just breaking through, however he has to be good otherwise he wouldn't have been invited)

Kas 1 - 2 BlinG (Completely biased here, love BlinG and his PvT is his best match up by a mile. Kas is still great though, 3rd place at IEM kiev recently, considered one of the best Terrans in Europe, so this one could easily be the other way around)

Titan 0 - 2 Stephano (Again I've never seen Titan play, but I've seen plenty of Stephano and know how much of a beast he is)

BeastyQT 1 - 2 Nerchio (I feel like a really bad SC2 spectator now because once again I've never seen BeastyQT play, but I know all about Nerchio, TB & Apollo are always singing his praises and he's got a great record with online tournaments).

GLHF all players, and cheers to Apollo and Scan Computers for setting this up Should be a great tournament!

P.S. TLPollO gives me 'sick nerd chills'™ (Sorry Artosis, stole your phrase teehee).

My predictions:

Ro8:
Grubby 2 - 0 Snute - Grubby is certainly a lot more skilled than Snute and his PvZ ain't half bad.

Kas 1 - 2 BlinG - BlinG isn't doing badly these days but he is up against Kas of all people. I think before recently he was at university from what I heard, and what you have to bear in mind is...... this guy made it 6 - 0 in the WCG2011 group stage and lost in the Ro8 only to IMMvp, the undisputed best Terran in the world at the moment and in a 1 - 2 series. Kas is good but I think BlinG can take him out.

Stephano 2 - 0 Titan - Based on Stephano's performance in past tournaments, this will easily be a 2 - 0 walkover for him.

Nerchio 2 - 1 Beastyqt - This could be a close matchup considering the fact that there aren't any obvious imbalances in ZvT at the moment.

Ro4:
Grubby 1 - 2 BlinG - Grubby is forever doomed to take either Ro4 or 4th place in any tournament he enters, much like Sen's 3rd place curse.

Stephano 2 - 0 Nerchio - Stephano was once quoted to have said that his ZvZ "wasn't that good" yet in the IPL3 finals, he ROFLstomped (and I mean ROFLstomped) FXOLucky 4 - 0 in the finals.

Finals:
BlinG 0 - 3 Stephano - Yes, I actually think that Stephano is so good, that he will take the whole tournament without dropping a single game. BlinG wouldn't stand a remote chance against him and this would be an anti-climatic finals that would make the GSL shriek in horror.

Should be great, just hope the casting concentrates more on the games than laughing at stupid crap like you did when you both casted IEM Kiev. Don't get me wrong a bit of fun is great but the balance was too much towards laughing like little girls imo. Great casters still

I'm gonna start using "Get under my goat" in day to day conversation. I assume it is used as an expression of surprise.

"Sir, it has just been released that President Obama is an alien!"
"Well, get under my goat!"

yeah not really, they were deconfirmed by Llewellys on his stream (in french), they approached him but apparently Dignitas is going to offer him a new & better contract. Bling is just a guest in the house.

Isn't Dignitas a richer and generally better team than Millenium?

I see Dignitas players in Korea, in the US, in Europe etc.. where as Millenium only really sends someone outside of Europe on the tournaments money.

Dignitas is also an English team, so makes more sense for an English player.

Can't see much benefit to Millenium over Dignitas unless they are going to offer him a way bigger contract.

Kas tried some quick one base play with helions and marauders. Bling had the second base up fast enough and the warpgates to hold it.

I think they are pretty equal as teams come, but Millenium owns the team house where Bling is currently staying. I guess it would just make more sense for him to be on Millenium if he plans to stay for an extended period of time.

Failed storms against an almost pure marine composition usually means you loose all your stuff...

Shame for bling, but if he wants to play on this level he needs to defend drops better. In the game on Terminus he had 4 stalkers in position but didn't targetfire a single medivac. This time he didn't have anything in position, when a drop on the main was Kas only chance to get back into the game...

He was never ahead. Kas killed a bunch of probes at the 3rd and traded armies. Also 3x Mules. The only thing he was behind on was upgrades, which doesn't matter when you're 40-50 supply ahead.

Yeah I know, that's kinda what I meant, BlinG's macro seriously lacked this game, which shouldn't really happen.

Guess he, indeed, tilted after the main snipe.

If they would be Bo5s, the tournament would be too long, so it`s reasonable.

Wow Titan throwing away units. Why would he want to lose to Stephano?

Titan would have won if he didn't make a mistake. He would've ROFLSTOMPED Stephano if he hadn't thrown away that army and clumped up his voids

Stephano practiced a lot with Mana and BlinG lately and he won like 75% of those matches. Though luck for Titan.

I think Titan wasted too much at the beginning which allowed Stephano to build up an mass infestor army with little to no pressure.

Saw on Stephano's stream when he was playing against Mana, apparantly Stephano is something like 45-3 vs Mana during the last month or two o.0

Yeah, Mana was saying that he felt like Stephano could do any strategy, and Mana would still lose. Which was disheartening as a Mana fan.

Blocked in first two probes from natural nexus between pylon and cannon, had to build another cannon to kill original cannon to free probes costing him ~350 minerals.

Stephano got to 75 drones without being attacked.

Stephano's tactical decisions vs force fields are beautiful here, like a chess player who thinks ahead. He uses each force field possibility to his advantage in some way, switching between flanks and the target of his attack - either army or base.

Well that game at the Blizzard Cup was a little funky because Stephano went all in and then MC held his natural. So it was pretty hard from Stephano to come back from that. Plus it was just a bo1.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Stephano fan, but MC is better than him. Okay, he may have been drunk at HSC, he may have had some bad luck at Blizzard GSL cup, but Stephano himself stated he is afraid of MC micro & macro (he played him quite a few times on the korean ladder and rarely if ever won), and that he thinks MC is overall slightly better than him. That's why he decided to all-in at the GSL cup, to surprise him.

That doesn't change the fact that Stephano has one of the best ZvP of the world, and that Titan made it pretty clear how *not* to play protoss against him, especially in game 2.

Sorry are we just picking individual games Stephano has lost now as evidence he couldn't cut it in Code S after going 2-2 at Blizz Cup?

(In comparison to Naniwa 0-4, Idra 1-4 out of Code S, Sen 0-4 out of Code S, Morrow out of Up/Downs 1-3, HuK dropping to Code A 1-3, SaSe 0-2 and Naniwa 0-2 last season in Code A)

Unless you are completely stupid, most people would take my comment to mean that Stephano has beastly ZvP and wins most of the time. Or are you so retarded that you think I was saying that its mathematically impossible to Stephano to lose to Protoss?

I don't understand - does Nerchio want to humiliate Beasty by beating him only with ling/bling/muta? Why no hive?

I think he's afraid to die during the transition to Hive because the game is such back and forth.

Sekker should do enough damage to one shot Muta honestly. It's so hard to get one off, they deserve to do 120 damage imo. :p

Not really, his initial decision to make two spines, no queen til 6 minutes and chase marines to the centre of the map with drones after holding a triple bunker block easily was poor.

Only a bronze leaguer would claim nerchio threw that away. He was constantly behind since pulling those drones at the start. Investing in hive when you're behind is stupid. Might as well quit the game and gg.

Investing in hive when the game is even is a calculated risk as well. Tech switching takes a certain amount of gas and minerals (you need to build a certain amount of broods for there to be a point). Furthermore, making broodlords takes a certain amount of infestors to protect them.

Can you idiots point me to a point in the game where nerchio could have stopped making 10-15 mutas and the same amount of banes and survived and/or stopped beastyqt from easily securing his 4th and 5th (and subsequently having beasty's production spiral out of control)?

No, now shut up. I frequently call nerchio retardio, but that doesn't mean I don't recognize that he played an amazing game. Almost perfect. Amazing how many times his 3rd was denied and that he still could make a slow, inching comeback basically playing 2 vs 3 base and 3vs3 base for prolonged periods of time.

Hive my ass bronze leaguers. Pissed me off reading it, just had to reply.

*edit: 10-15 mutas probably is too conservative even that. Hive upgrade cost. Greater spire upgrade cost. At least 5-6 corruptors cost. 6 corruptor morph to BL cost.

Now you've got 6 broodlords and 0 infestors against a 5 base terran with 120 3-3 marines. What next geniouses?

Idiots deserve to be insulted. As far as I'm concerned they're actively insulting nerchio by insinuating he played bad.

You know, you could say the same without an insult each line.

It's Lalush tho...he either BM's on forums...or BM's after he loses a game....so he must not be having a good time playing today.

On a brighter note, once again nerchio threw away 2nd game as well...atkd b4 his lings were even there...gonna be fun watching stephano vs beastqt tho :D

I'm loving how 2012 is shaping up for Kas! He's playing on form, improving a lot and having lots of succces!

He said he'd go to korea 2012 and with the way hes playing and Empire growing as a team, I could see Empire getting a deal with a korean team and sending their players over there to train. Perhaps TSL? Or NSHS?

Predictions:
Grubby 2 - 0 Snute
Kas 1 - 2 BlinG
Titan 0 - 2 Stephano
BeastyQT 1 - 2 Nerchio

So I got Grubby v Snute and Stephano v Titan right out of my earlier predictions, but Bling loses and BeastyQT comes out of nowhere and beats Nerchio, who didn't play up to his usual standard. Oh well, 50% correct.

I think Stephano will beat Beasty, so if Grubby beats Kas then Stephano will win in the final. And if Kas beats Grubby, then Stephano will win. Basically, Stephano will win.

Well I think that Sage in an interview said that MorroW was living there because he was a good friend of theirs, not because there is any alliance coming/forming between Mouz and NSHS. But yeah, it's more likely to be TSL. Especially after they apparantly almost made a partnership with fnatic, so they are obviously interested in pursuing a foreign partnership.

Stephano is so good tournaments organizers should just give him a 10000 dollars montly allowance and stop inviting him to tournaments. If his playing against European players, he has a 90% chance of winning the tournament.

That's just Lalush's personality. Not everyone can be as nice as, say Whitera or Sheth, nor would that be desirable, as the scene would just be boring.

That's what his team is for. Unfortunately, major tournaments that are only foreigners are quickly becoming the minority as the Koreans shift over to the foreign scene in larger numbers. Braces yourselves, the Koreans are coming.

I highly doubt Grubby would 3-0 Stephano... taking anything better than 1-3 would be an upset, given how Stephano's ZvP has been lately

Eating bananas on an internet stream seems like a bad idea to me...

especially with the starcraft scene's penchant for homosexual fanfiction/art

Yeah, I was thinking Naniwa, Grubby, Sase, Rotterdam, Nightend, Elfi. I have not looked in to it in any depth at all, but it feels like they tend to be drawn to P more than any other race.

Hell yeah, celebrate my friend. Hopefully if guys like Grubby and Moon are successful in SC2, it could help generate crossover appeal for WC3 fans, which would especially bolster the Chinese scene.

Beasty stole pink from Stephano last game (and this one it seems lol), at which Stephano proclaimed that he didn't like him and didn't want to talk to him... I highly doubt he was being serious though, Stephano's a pretty well known troll

BeastyQT stole his colour, and said something like "no more pink power ranger", then Stephano said "I don't like you any more, please stop talking to me". Then people overreacted.

I'm sure no one with just a little bit of starcraft 2 knowledge would actually think stephano is the best zerg in the world even top 5 is a far stretch tbh

Outside Korea... probably yes... but counting Korea he's probably hovering at somewhere between 5-10 or smth

DongRaeGu and Leenock are the only zergs arguably better than Stephano.

lol. Stephano is not better than nestea.

Hell, I'm not even sure if Stephano would be better than a guy like Curious or Coca. He is one of the world's top 10/20 zergs, and going 2-2 in the Blizzard Cup was very respectable. But I think the top Korean zergs still have an edge over him.

Man Beastyqt really played this as a bad variant of a ForGG's build.

Really bad execution too =/. No cloak, no scouting denying 3rd with banshees, not enough turrets and he just threw away his 3rd -.-

No, he was talking about the joke that started at IPL 3 where Stephano as the last foreigner in the tournament and eventual champion became "american".

Well, every foreigner is american according to TL

Haha. No need to have strong players when you can just adopt players from other countries.

He was just playing safe, he never makes balings before going infestor like he did in game 1.

His plan seem unrefined, because he was just playing the man, not a build.... because he knew if he stayed on his toes (ie: early scouting) there is no way he could lose.

Instead of refining his build, he just made sure to crush every army that moved out.

Its high level, IMO. BeastyQT didn't get one battle victory in 2 games. Never once causing Stephano fanboys to worry.... :D

There is a slight difference between supply blocked and supply capped. That's the beauty of zerg, as long as you spend your larvae before next ones come up, you don't lose any production capacity...so being supply capped doesnt matter much if you get your next overlords in time, which he does. Only problem is if you are attacked while overlords are coming...that's a risk Stephano is taking to spend his money elsewhere when he doesn't need overlords, a risk that have been exploited by few people (mainly koreans).

And well, Bqt doesn't play very well, but just beated Nerchio...you have to give credit to Stephano to be able to punish every mistake his opponents do.

Just checked. And so far there has only been one game that wasn't a 2-0 (BlinG took one game from Kas)

I really hope that the final is not a 3-0. Would love to see a close, epic 3-2 series. Whoever wins I will be happy.

as zerg you can just make ovis at around halftime before injected larvae pops out, than you have enough supply, when you need it

It's okay to be supply blocked as long as it isn't hindering your production cycles. Key difference.

Hm, don't know, Stephano vs Grubby is usually not close, a 3-0 is much more likely than a 3-2, although the games might still be epic.

And even if it is, as long as you're not attacked or not utilizing those units immediately, it still won't cut into your production cycle, as larvae accumulates. As long as you don't go beyond the normal 3 larvae at the hatch, that is.

Grubby fast expands, being annoying with his starting probe delaying Stephano's natural, then 3rd base.

Fastforward now - +1 5gate aggression coming out of Grubby. Stephano already has a handful or roaches and 3 base decently saturated. Deflects the attack with ease, Grubby backs up and is going Robotics.

People really think Stephano gets supply blocked frequently and it affects his games? I can understand maybe if you don't know anything about how Zerg works. Racial supply block severity looks something like this.

Most Severe - Terran > Protoss > Zerg - Least Severe

Supply block as Terran is a critical mis-step because they have no way of accelerating their build-time and as such dumping resources. A supply-block as Terran WILL result in a smaller army at any given point in time before 200/200. Having those minerals in the bank, unable to spend them, does nothing. A supply-block as Protoss isn't good, but it's not as bad. You can dump resources with a warp-in after the fact and then use chrono-boost to catch up with having to build more production facilities. A Terran's only option if he can't spend his money is to build more production facilities so he can spend it faster, which in itself takes time. A supply-block for a Zerg generally only makes a big difference if you are in the process of being attacked. If you're building drones and you spot the army coming across the map. You go to build units and suddenly you can't, you're in deep shit. If you can point out when this happens for Stephano, then fair enough but honestly, I must have cast 50 maps of his in the last few months at least and I can't remember one instance of that happening. Otherwise, supply block for Zerg really does not matter all that much. If your opponent is not attacking, getting supply blocked isn't going to limit you very much at all. You can stockpile larvae up to 19 per hatch, you can then immediately spend it all at once provided you have the necessary resources to do so. The supply block does nothing to you in this respect. The only time this is really going to affect you while macroing is if you get supply blocked frequently while building rounds of drones, ergo slowing down your economy since you've been able to mine less over X period of time.

if you watch carefully, you could see it now, stephano was 76/76, 4 ovis were made, few seconds after the larvae pops out
edit: and now 110/110, 6 ovis

Mmhhh interesting game, you could feel Stephano ahead all the time, but I find it interesting he decided to go late game instead of trying to finish Grubby right away with a big roach / lings push. Maybe he is a bit afraid of the defense of Grubby

Yup, he does not lose to Grubby. Very much an old WC3 rivalry going on right there with the roles reversed in SC2.

There was no WC3 rivalry between them. Stephano never played at Grubby's level in W3.

true, they didnt meet all too often in tournaments, although stephano was pretty good as well. "rivalry" doesnt fit, but ye, the roles are pretty much reversed - but grubby's chances to win vs stephano now are higher than stephanos chances in wc3 back then for sure

No. Stephano always plays like that because he knows that he will defeat his opponent to 100% in the late game, while in the mid game some awesome forcefields can turn the tide.

Actually, Stephano usually does split his Broodlords when a mothership is out. And do not underestimate a small amount of minerals for each broodling, just like for interceptors!

Either Grubby needs to bust out some 2 base allins, cannon rush or go super sayan, because otherwise he isn't winning this.

Stephano is playing from Millenium's house, in south of France. Bling, Adelscott and Tarson training there.

Yes, but in terms of attacking they are far more versatile than broodlords. Making interceptors cost money makes sense for them.

That is going to be difficult for Grubby to come back, but Stephano will be in time for the ONOG cup
I feel for Grubby though, this is probably extremely depressing, he hasn't taken a map from Stephano for quiiiiiite some time now.

Stephano is one of the few zergs who always get units out at the 8 min mark regardless what they see.
If no attack is coming - great drone up afterwards and if an attack comes you can crush it and win the game easily later.
Really hard to play against a style like this as protoss.

Grubby reacting to the 10 pool pretty well, I wish he got off that natural block though. Nice cancel of the gateway into Core there.

Wait..... TL is going down in 13 minutes.... what do we do then?? ><

There is no block ... Stephano is just unbelievable good!

Now that he practices in a pro house no one can stop him from winning all LAN events in 2012!

Stephano is unbelievably good, but there is a definite block on Grubby's end, he can beat Nerchio, Sheth, etc in series, and while they are worse than Stephano, Grubby should still occasionally be able to take games/series off Stephano, but it never happens.

I dont understand TLO's and Apollo's talk about gimmicky play from Grubby. You HAVE to pressure the zerg or he is too far ahead. This can be Stargate, can be warp prism, can be the +1 zealot pressure to force roaches, but you just cannot sit back and turtle and let the zerg drone like crazy.

No clue what Protoss is supposed to do there. Stephano shit all over everything Grubby did. By the third game, you could see that Grubby didn't even think he could win. Looked utterly hopeless.

not unexpected.

stephano and bling played practise matches some days ago, it was like 15-1 for stephano.... incredibly hard for foreigners to even win maps against stephano

Stephano did not drop any game on the whole tourney if i recall well...

That was to be expected in an Euro only tournament.

It would be very hard to deny Stephano the title of "best player outside of Korea". Even Naniwa doesn't have the accomplishments at this moment in time.

I think that Kas or Nerchio may be the best foreigners outside of Korea, look at their results online! (especially nerchio, 65+% winrate in all his games TLPD)

sure but the koreans stephano beat in those events really weren't at all as high-profile as naniwa's wins during the same time. Recently both players have been kind of under-performing though in both dreamhack winter and hsc3/iem kiev respectively.

''naniwa'' also isn't an argument. but arguing about players is stupid. unless i win something, i don't care.

stephano is more accomplished. And he plays zerg.

there's a difference between being the best player and winning the most because stephano plays zerg he will obviously win more easily but when debating over the best player naniwa is still the obvious choice

Stephano is probably one of the best foreign Zergs but best player outside of Korea? I am not sure about that. This is a very small tournament. Things would looks very different if more top talent was here. He is good enough to know that Stephano can probably take a series off anyone in the world. Some of the other players in this tournament. Not so much.

While not being a "fanboy", is it safe to say that Stephano is the best player outside of Korea? This was such a crushing victory.

naniwa

no

I've never seen such a compelling argument! Bravo! Totally worth posting!

I don't think its very proper to try to consider balance in these types of discussions. Its best to just go by results and how their games have looked lately, since there is obviously more to it than results.

It would be very hard to deny Stephano the title of "best player outside of Korea". Even Naniwa doesn't have the accomplishments at this moment in time.

What accomplishments do Stephano have that Naniwa lacks?

A won match in the gom.tv booth =) ?

Thanks to casters, crew and sponsors. Gratz to Stephano for winning and ggwp to Beasty and Grubby for beating Nerchio and Kas.
