In the spirit of the holidays, ESL and Twitch.tv have partnered to offer you guys a special Starcraft 2 holiday tournament.
2v2 is a very popular, yet highly neglected format when it comes to competitive Starcraft play. This holiday season, ESL seeks to rectify that by hosting a $2,000 tournament for the 2v2 community.
The tournament will span three days, and is open to anyone that wants to play. Signing up is a simple (although slightly tedious) process:
The format of the tournament: Games will be played on EU No race restrictions Best of 5 Loser Picks the next map Map Pool : All ladder maps First Map: Chosen by veto process (one team vetos, then the other, until only one map remains)
The dates and times of the tournament are as follows:
Open bracket up until the RO16: December 20th, begins at 8PM CET, 2PM EST (My hope is that this close to Christmas, most North Americans will also be free to play)
RO16 up until the Semi-Finals: December 21st, begins at 8PM CET, 2PM EST
Semis, third place match, and grand final: December 22nd, begins at 8PM CET, 2PM EST
Prize Distribution: 1st: $700 2nd: $500 3rd: $300
4th-8th: $100
I really hope you guys are as excited to play in this tournament as I am to cast it.

Are there any good custom maps for 2v2? I would imagine most serious mapmakers spend most of their time on 1v1 maps. If there are any, I would have loved to see some custom maps.
Either way - this looks fun. I will be signing up with one of my friends later ^^

Yup. There are a few good custom 2v2 maps.
This looks awesome, can't wait.
you cant have a tournament like this with custom maps unless you immediately announce the names of the maps. otherwise people won't be prepared to play on them, and teams would get unfair advantages by picking maps the other team has never even heard of.
I am getting: " Please wait. A place in the tournament has been reserved for you. You must confirm your participation in the cup from this time onwards:
20/12/11 14:00 "
will i get an email to comfirm? should i do it on the site?

I'll make sure our admins take a look at this thread and address this question asap!
There are some custom maps (citadel of gaia) that are well-known in 2v2s. It was used in the PTSL and many other 2v2 events. Furthermore it is a nice, big, macro map that discourages cheesy games. I have a hard time believing the few pros that don't know about it would have a hard time adjusting (it isn't an easily exploitable map).
On December 15 2011 15:31 Caliber wrote: can we get confirmation on maps? i know OP has ladder maps, but there is a lot of talk about custom maps as well.
While I recognize there are some good custom maps out there, it looks like we'll be restricting the map pool to only ladder maps.
If there's enough support, we may remove Ruins of Tarsonis, though.
The season changes right before doesn't it? So there's a possibility of some new 2v2 maps. I doubt it would be enough time to get used to them, though.

I should probably clarify: In the event of lots of new 2v2 maps, the pool will be the 2v2 maps from THIS season. IE: the one ending right now.

You have to confirm your participation with the checkin, simply click the checkin button 20 minutes before the Cup starts . Checkin is open for 10 minutes. If you've missed the checkin phase, you still have the chance to get a slot via Late Sign up (if the cup isnt full). Checkin: 19:40-19:50 CET Late Sign up 19:50- Cup start
If Sieesch is playing his wtf song while playing, no one stands a chance in winning this except Lillekanin and Sieesch. Lille fighting ! And thanks for this awesome opportunity to watch these guys in action :-)
Aww, was so excited about this but then I realized it was on EU. I wish I had gotten an EU account when they were on 50% off lol. Any chance of having some dummy accounts people from other regions could use?
Alright, I signed up, and even made a logo, but the tourney registration page tells me I don't have a short name, and I haven't linked my SC2 sccount, BOTH OF WHICH ARE FILTHY LIIIIES.
I'm hoping it all works, 'cause me and my buddy are Silver league, and we're ready to show that MechZaIN and that NC and all those others HOW IT'S DONE.
(Seriously though, we're on the page, so it worked, rite?)

Umm, is this seriously bo5 since first round? Seems overkill. 2v2s often aren't shorter than 1v1s even, makes no sense to have bo5 on rounds that usually have bo1.

This will be awesome. I don´t know, for who to cheer yet, but I think it will be Cubert and Aristeo. They were the worlds best 2v2-team for so long, they certainly deserve a big win.
It was going to be studio 1, but our TL streams are still tied to studio 2, so we'll actually be in the old studio for today. We'll be doing the final from the new studio, though, on Thursday.

Impressive from BlinG there, I always try to do that, but it never works well when I do it ^^. Guess that's why he's the pro =D! e; Have to say it's a really enjoyable thing to watch, not sure if it's the 2v2, or just Bitterdam in general, but it's fun nonetheless!

Axslav and Strifecro are near unbeatable when Axslav plays T. He played P for most of the EGMC.
Also, Strifecro may be the better 2v2 player, but Machine is the better 1v1 player. And with Axslav guiding him, I'd say machine/axslav is at least equal to if not better than Axslav/strifecro.
But yea, I wouldn't call them the favourites. They have a very real chance of winning though... along with about 5 other teams.

Edit (@Kara,Delphi-Comment): Sure, I forgot them, because I didn´t saw an "ESC", but Delphi is on Alternate now, so they had to change the name. I hope, you can forgive me, for not checking, if "pink fluffy unicorns" had serious players in it.

Hmm, why make seven million colossi if you're not going to do anything with them until broods/vikings/massive tank numbers are on the field? Seems like a weird strategy to me, but hey, they're the 2v2 team, so they must have done it before .
On December 22 2011 04:24 Badfatpanda wrote: nice target firing from dde/strife, the pz team had a huge positional advantage but nice micro really came out on top
Colosi neh not really that much of an advantage vs tanks.
Hahah, Stephano & Nerchio switching up the french/polish . Another fun thing is that these guys are having more fun than in 1v1 tournaments I think, which shows in their gameplay/chat!
Lol, great banter between Stephano and Nerchio. Nerchio playing Terran really weird to me even though it shouldn't be because he played random before going for Zerg.
This tournament DEFINITELY needs more viewers. It's such a laid back, rad tournament, and no competitive 2v2's are ever streamed (hardly), so this is an awesome opportunity. (Barring the PSTL).

The casters said, Stephano would be up 2-0, but someone corrected them, saying, that the first game was just 14s long and was probably no real game(which was correct).

You can't do a 1v1 and a 2v2 tournament at the same time and expect players to play both. The big events are stressful enough without having to play two tournaments at once.

Yea dude, how could anyone handle that? Imagine if in a sport like tennis Serena Williams tried to play 2's with her sister Venus, while also playing 1's in a grand slam event. There is no way she could win or even compete in both... Oh wait...
It wouldn't be that much more stressful, it's 2's. 1's would always take priority, and whoever wanted to participate in both or just one of the events could. Relax.
You could, but the way that events are setup now, there's simply not much time for both. Look at the MLG schedules this year, players playing matches every hour for ten hours, where would you fit in another tournament? Sure, players who are knocked out could participate, but you wouldn't get the best players.
For that, you need a standalone tournament at a time when there's not much else going on.
We start at 19:00 tonight guys with the last Quarter final because they couldnt play yesterday. Team Plaga (Micky &Crusader) vs Cybernation! ( Eels team ), winner will play Delphi Kara, Other semi final is DDE/Strife vs Stephano & Bling, really excited!
I'd love to follow this tournament, it sounds like there are some great 2v2s going on... it would be a lot easier if there were any kind of links to brackets or results in the OP.

Personally I enjoyed the BO5 style from the beginning, but seeds would also have been cool. Hard to seed though, since there's so many incredible 1v1 players, who're actually performing incredibly well, and many lesser known 2v2 teams, that also plays exceptionally good.
Awesome job by the casters and congrats to the top finishers. Demonstrated that 2v2 has potential imho :D
Hopefully many tournaments like this to come ^____^
