The 10 000 dollar invitational Starcraft 2 tournament, ASUS ROG Stars Invite, calls for two more familiar faces to the scene as TotalBiscuit and Apollo are announced as casters for the action packed weekend starting at 4th of November.

The last ASUS ROG Starcraft 2 tournament at ASSEMBLY Summer was a blast. Partly because of the dynamic duo sitting behind the mics raising the entertainment value of the event a great deal. Who else could you imagine casting the (Z)Stephano vs (T)BRAT_OK game in Testbug where a spine crawler rush is being dealt with battle cruisers? It’s fair to say, these guys have talent.

The lead voice in our familiar casting duo is none other than TotalBiscuit, the Cynical TotalHalibruit, the one guy in the StarCraft 2 scene you will never want to challenge to a tongue twister duel. While his in-game actions per minute might not be world class, his words per minute certainly is, and his play-by-play can leave you staring breathless at the game, even if all that is going on at the time is a scout probe stealing five minerals.

Balancing out the duo is fittingly the ancient god of poetry and knowledge, Apollo, who brings on the deeper insight of a long-running RTS veteran and overall steadiness to the broadcast. Coincidentally Apollo is also the only StarCraft 2 caster that has beaten a Finnish tournament admin in a 1vs1 match, and that alone speaks volumes about his competence.

It's difficult, because you want to watch to see the players you want to see, but you also have to tolerate the casters.

It's not an ideal position.

Id say the standards for live-reports are lower than of any other threads and none of these posts would be ban-worthy in that case
the feedback in this thread seems pretty damn positive overall

The most professional casting duo out there. Though Tastosis are the most recognized, they lack commitment and professionalism compared to TB and Apollo. Great to have them cast Asus Rog.

I can't say I agree with you there. Especially regarding the "commitment" that Tastosis supposedly lack. Just wait until the "Sons of Starcraft" documentary comes out, then you'll see. I don't even know the half of it, but the stuff I do know about what they (Artosis especially) went through to get to where they are now is mind blowing. The anecdotes I've heard from the former BW players from America (on streams/shows etc) all speak to Artosis having gone through a lot to get to where he is. Sleeping on people's couches, floors etc.

I really do enjoy Apollo. He's always great and deserves all the credit he gets (and then some). I don't want to be too harsh, but I don't really get anything from TB. He has a very particular style of commentary that I know a lot of people enjoy, but it doesn't really work for me.

Awwwww yeah! This event is looking very impressive with the amazing players and now the casters... although I really don't know if you need a thread for each particular announcement. If every tournament did this then it would be terrible (though it obviously does help with publicity). :-/ Meh, still looking forward to the event!

Tournament which rounds up Bitter, Rotterdam, Apollo and TB would outdo MLG in terms of caster awesomeness.

Because they are two of the best casters? I can´t listen to most casters beside Tastosis because it´s too boring. But I can listen to TB even if he live casts an old woman crossing the street.

In the end it doesn´t even matters Everybody has his favourite, and if someone really have to complain about something, why not at the tourneys homepage? But much more fun here I guess...

Amazing line-up and casters, good luck with the tourney!

TB and Apollo don't go on 5m ramparts talking about a lollypop they tasted in High School. This is what I mean about professionalism. Tastosis is the best outside the GSL (take their MLG Orlando or Blizzcon performances for example). In GSL I simply mute the cast the moment they get off topic, which is generally after 30s.

I guess I understand some of the dislike of either TB's accent or his game knowledge... BUT he's able to bring excitement to anything (I was entertained by him casting Paragon wiping repeatedly on some WoW content I've never heard of).

Add Apollo and you've got a very rounded team. For those that haven't seen them cast, their chemistry is second only to the archon itself (imo). Also, they're a well known casting duo in Europe so probably relatively easy to book (they also did the ROG tournament at ASSEMBLY summer).

I do miss some of the more "informative" casts that were prevalent when sc2 was newer..

I'd give some love to BitterDam as well. I think MrBitter and Rotterdam are two of the most underrated casters and one of the most genuinely entertaining duos out there. They have great chemistry with each other which is a very important trait to have when casting long shows where you have to be on all the time. Also, the "Grass..." show they just completed has really improved their casting of their off races as well and I feel that as they move through the Terran-centric show they'll become even more well rounded.

I don't want to be too down on TB and Apollo, it's just that there are a lot of really good casters out there and to try and put one above the other is really hard.

I didn't feel like writing out all the casting duos that are better, so i only put down 4. But yes, those two are good as well

That's fair enough. :D

1.) Play the game. Nothing annoys me more than someone who advertises himself as a caster, only to later reveal that he plays the game at a gold level. I'm sorry guys, but you have to understand the game if you're going to talk about it. As a caster, it is your responsibility to sell StarCraft 2 to your audience. A gold league player selling SC2 to an audience is asking to buy a Rolex on the streets in Chinatown.

Mr. Bitter

Look forward to the games nonetheless. GL TB.

They go off topic ALL THE TIME except, unlike Tastosis, they aren't entertaining/funny at all. The fact you call them professional is really surprising, as their casts are some of the most unprofessional and sloppy casts I've seen when it comes to high level sc2 casting.I really dislike TB's casting, Apollo is a good analytical caster, but isn't very entertaining. And honestly, the off-topic discussions of Tastosis is why their GSL casts are much better than their MLG casts imo, I've seen and played through 1 rax expands a billion times, I'd rather listen to something entertaining rather than have the build explained to me for the 200th time.

Obviously this is all opinions though.

Either way will be some fantastic games to watch.

Eh, I would've prefered djWHEAT to TB, even if it isn't as if I hate TB or anything. He works well with Apollo but I liked djWHEAT+Apollo combo more at IPL3.

Never heard them together, but I adore TB for his unique style and I always enjoyed Apollo alongside Day9, so they can't be bad together.

Also, two Brits, so I won't have to hear the annoying American accent

Also nr. 2: stop shitting on our casters, regardless who they are.

I, for one, enjoy some Biscuit&Apollo.

Also, why do these topics always end up comparing the casters and spewing hate.
It's cool, if you don't like them don't watch them, but why do we have to read it?

I can't come up with any caster about whom i would say "I can't stand him". I enjoy some more some less but they never take away from my enjoyment of the game. Do I have a high threshold or something? Or do other posters have it too low?

Easily annoyed posters are annoying.

I dont get the hate bandwagon going on this topic.

Most people dont realize that TB isnt an analyst caster. Hes a shoutcaster, thats what he does best, and thats why hes with Dapollo. They complement each other.

I love both, same way i love Tastosis, Bitterdam and Wolfdoa.

Just because a caster duo isnt Tastosis, most people simply hate it. I dont get it.

I do realise he's not the analyst in the duo, but I still don't find his style entertaining. I don't mind if other do, that's their cup of tea and they can have it as they like.

TB....not quite as knowledgeable, but he talks the talk and is a great PbP guy

I do respect your effort for esports, and I don’t think you’re a bad commentator. But no, you’re not my favorite at this moment, and most of us compares with our favorites

Anyway,I will try to give you some more accurate critics, to explain, from my own perspective and my own preferences only of course.

You do seem to lack some in-depth Starcraft 2 knowledge that many other commentators have. But that can be somewhat fine, alongside for example Apollo you can be the entertainer while he provides more analysis. Same as Tasteless (more entertaining) and Artosis (more analyzing) in some ways.

In my opinion, often the analyzing guy should have more room than the entertaining guy. Because Starcraft 2 is a game that often is all about small changes in strategies, small skirmishes, which become interesting for the audience if someone provides an in-depth view that we can’t always comprehend ourselves.

What I don’t like that much about your commentating is that you often speak about those small situations and changes in your “entertaining way” when (for example) Apollo could provide something more interesting, in-depth. This combined with your great voice gives me the feeling that you “take over” a little bit too much.

I would like you to be a little more laid back in most situations and give more room to you co-commentator, and use your great voice and entertaining style in those parts of the games that are truly exciting like big battles and such. I do think that this balance is something that makes Tasteless and Artosis so good. (Then there are always Day9, who can do both roles by himself sometimes ^^). Of course, it wouldn’t hurt if you improved your game knowledge a little bit

Hopefully I was a little more accurate now, explaining my view. As a said, I don’t think you’re a bad commentator, I listen to most of the events you commentate with pleasure. But for now, you’re one the “famous commentators” (I could say some of the above about for example Husky as well) that I do think could do with some improvement. Keep your efforts up and you probably will improve, in one way or another!

I am angry that people think it's okay to just hate bash something that's not their preference. Different people like different casting styles. Nothing wrong with muting the stream (or not watching) if you strongly dislike the caster.

... and what do you "no" about casting?

He's also the best at injecting hype into a live audience.

Regular casters: "Make some noise for IMMVP guys."

TB: "And in the blue trunks, representing team IM, representing South Korea, the game genie Terran, the 3-Time GSL champion, the reigning Blizzcon champion, regarded by many as THE BEST TERRAN IN THE WOOOOOOOOOOOOOORLLD! IT, IS, IM'S M-V-P!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Awesome stuff, TB has done more for the gaming community and esports scene then any of the 'haters' in the thread combined, you guys should spend your efforts doing something constructive. For those who miss an informative link, here's the Liquipedia page. I think it's gonna be a final between HuK and Idra. Nice round up anyway, HYPED!

TB has a very unique casting style, his casts are much more entertaining than 90% of the other casters out there.

To the trolls bashing on TB, you should go hide under a bridge and think about how much the guy does for the community before posting stupid stuff.

Nice, I enjoy these guys casting. Tasteosis can't cast everything.

You have two "quality" posts... shouldn't have bothered making an account.

TB provides excellent PbP and paired with dApollo's insight they provide a very good cast. Like many things, It's a matter of tast.

To be honest, that kind of spiel is one of the reasons I don't enjoy his casting. I don't particularly enjoy the long, ring announcer style deployed at the beginnings of games because it becomes very long winded and a little hackneyed the further into a tournament we progress. Also, it's all very general information that's being spent all at once. I notice that your "regular" caster is similar to the introduction that Tasteless was using towards the end of the GSL finals, and I have a counter argument to that.

All the information that TB lays out in the first 30 seconds is kind of wasted since he doesn't really build upon it. Conversely, those points (be it the championships, team alignment etc) are also covered by other casters. However, the difference is that the information is discussed in more depth and relevance to the match at times when the action is low so as to not interrupt the action and be available to fill the time. For example, during lulls in games Tastosis will discuss the effect a player's team has on their playstyle etc, or the previous championships they've won and how it happened.

I don't have a problem with TB personally or the people who enjoy his work, that's your cup of tea and you can have it as you like. However, I'm just trying to illustrate the reasons why I don't enjoy his style compared to other casters.

The whole point is to get the crowd pumped before the action starts. That type of information is common knowledge, and has little to no place during a match. If there's a lull mid-game or before the game, you bring out statistics, possible strategies, etc. And that's something Apollo does quite well.

They are possibly one of the best casting duo's besides for Tastosis. I am quite looking forward to this event, and with them casting it should prove to be great.

Haters gonna hate. These threads are always full of people with 1 post trolling TB haha. As many others have said, TB really grew on me and I think hes a great caster. Apollo has great knowledge and great reads as well, amazing combo.

If you wanted to give anyone a reason not to sign up to teamliquid, this thread would do the job lol.

...his words per minute certainly is, and his play-by-play can leave you staring breathless at the game, even if all that is going on at the time is a scout probe stealing five minerals.

Grudgematch with Klazart?

Jokes aside, those two make a really good casting duo archon, TB's voice is spectacular.

TB, sorry for all the hate you are getting in here. I know you don't like me, but I'll try to say things from my point of view, perhaps maybe to speak for all the haters. I hate to see someone ganged up upon, this is an event we should all celebrate (we don't all post how 'shitty' a tournament is because we all hate, i don't know, 'that player', do we? We don't say gsl sucks because bitbybit was in it, right?) and even if someone hates you more than anyone else, we all appreciate you casting. Could We/I do a better job than you? personally, I think I could... but I don't have the time. I appreciate the time you take to do what you do, even if I don't like how you do it. I know that isn't the most flattering compliment, but I don't at all hate you, and I look forward to a good competition with someone who is kind enough to take the time to cast it.

First off, I think some people are rubbed the wrong way with your wow background. I think a lot of SC players are sort of all about skill, either perceived or not, and wow is definitely perceived as a skill-less game. I think some people feel you just hopped on the sc2 casting bandwagon from wow. It doesn't really matter if this is true or not, because what matters is you are here now, and every cast you do helps the community. Because of you, I watched cool games. Did I wish tastosis or wolf or a million other casters casted it? Sure. But they didn't, and you did, first off, and secondly I really would rather watch the 'worst caster' than download the replay myself and watch it that way.

Secondly I think a lot of people don't like how you lack much knowledge about the game. We get it, one caster is analytical, one is SHOUTcastingⓇ, but even moletrap is KR diamond (personally I like moletrap, don't know why people don't). I know you 'advertise' how you are low level, that you are a playby play, but I think a lot of people are slightly offended when you talk about this so much, as if you should be ashamed about this stuff. And I get it, don't be ashamed about who you are, but a lot of people will tell you that masters, or even diamond league, is REALLY easy to get into, if you just put the time into it. That you haven't put the time into this game, is what people question. Really, the Mr. Bitter statement from his interview encapsulates this point very well.

spoilered because I already posted it:
+ Show Spoiler +
1.) Play the game. Nothing annoys me more than someone who advertises himself as a caster, only to later reveal that he plays the game at a gold level. I'm sorry guys, but you have to understand the game if you're going to talk about it. As a caster, it is your responsibility to sell StarCraft 2 to your audience. A gold league player selling SC2 to an audience is asking to buy a Rolex on the streets in Chinatown.

Mr. Bitter

Third, I think some people dislike your voice. You can tell them to fuck off, because there isn't anything you can do about that besides live in america for 20 years to lose the accent.

So to all the haters, get over it. It's ridiculous to bash a tournie simply because one participant is someone you don't like. Otherwise, every major tournament would be shunned because one of the players is stupid. You can always watch the replays. To TB, just get better at the game. It doesn't take long, but it does take dedication, something many of us feel you haven't proved. Many of us don't find it flattering when you go on and on about how you are still in bronze, we find it annoying, and something we really don't like in a caster - there are plenty of diamond level casters out there that can shout just as much.

I wish you would cast, if only for you to see what it is like to get flamed every day, like every caster that isnt Tastosis seems to have to suffer.

Anyone who doesn't like this casting duo probably didnt watch Dreamhack invitational. They were amazing at that!

As for the game knowledge thing, I think TBs game knowledge is at far higher standard than the league he plays in would indicate. He suffers from dyspraxia which makes multitasking extremely difficult which is obviously something required in SC2 and thus he makes stupid mistakes that hold him back in ladder.

^ you don't need multitasking to get to at least diamond, much less masters. And if you suffer from something that makes it 'hard to multitask' than sorry, maybe you shouldn't be a sc2 caster. Just because you have a medical reason to be in gold doesn't make it okay, and you'd get to diamond easily with just game knowledge. playing in lower leagues gives you a skewed understanding of the game.

I wish you would cast, if only for you to see what it is like to get flamed every day, like every caster that isnt Tastosis seems to have to suffer.

What does that have to do with anything? I get TB gets a lot of hate, and I think it's a bit unfair, but on the other hand there is a reason for it, something that I think TB can fix. I think there's too much bashing on him in a thread that is a good thing - this is a tournament with TB taking the time to cast, and we could just as easily not have anyone casting it, or even if you don't like the caster, doesn't mean the tournament is bad.

I will thoroughly enjoy watching this tournament, and appreciate TB casting it. I may not like him as a caster, but I appreciate that he's casting.

So you think you can get to Diamond maybe masters with game knowledge alone? SC2 has nothing to do with reflexes, hand eye coordination, not to mention multitasking? Everyone below Masters is either too stupid or too lazy to get the required game knowledge?

Multitasking is pretty important even in low leagues, if you don't scout for instance you are going to lose alot of games to lesser skilled (knowledgeable ;p) players.

Nice! Its always good to see large events like MLG and now this tourney let the lesser, not as well known community casters do some stuff on the side stage matches. Any word on who main casters are going to be for the people that care about SC2?

High Masters/GM. A lot of people, from pros to staff, have said the same thing.

Everyone below Masters is either too stupid or too lazy to get the required game knowledge?

I said diamond, but people below masters just don't have the time, skill, or knowledge. Most usually, it's lack of time. If you don't play regularly it's pretty hard to rank up, no matter how good you are.

It's not to say low level can't know a lot about the game, but their sense of timings and importance of macro is a little flawed. It's just a totally different ball game, ie mutas are horrible against roach/infestor in platinum, but in masters, it's suicide not to get mutas.

Anyways this is derailing... We all know TB is known not for his skill, but his excitement. I'm just glad he's willing to cast games for us

You don't have to play the game to present it to fans in an entertaining way. This is by far the most ridiculous criticism to use against any commentator of any sport.

I personally just find Mr Bitter's statement hilariously ironic considering his casting of some of the games at IEM NY. DRG's especially, just.. urgh. He went for the 2 base infested terran bust against a forge fe and Mr Bitter literally had no idea what was happening. He just kept saying 'I don't know what hes doing here' when its a build used so much in the GSL.

If you are going to say stuff like the statement he made, you REALLY have to be beyond reproach when it comes to game knowledge, becuase otherwise you are just going to look like an ass.

It's like a Chinatown vendor claiming that they have the only real Rolexes in all of Chinatown (normally when I parody someone's statement I try to play with the words more, I did my best with that sentence).

I've never been a fan of TB, but I love Apollo and his casting so that's all good on my side. <3

Fine I guess, I just wish Totalbiscuit would actually know what he is talking about. Looking farward to Apollo though, amazing caster.

Not a bad attempt. Just to clarify, I think that Mr Bitter is a great caster, but you really can't make statements like that.

Don't get me wrong. I was always saying that i love Totalbiscuit for his passion and what he does for the community, but recently i found that i like his commentary less and less. It seems that proper game analysis starts to be more and more valuable for me.

I recently watched Grubby Inv #3 and the contrast between 2GD's and Apollo's commentary was huuuuuge!
It's like comparing proffessor (Apollo) to drunken student (2GD).
It was fun between games, but when the game was on, Apollo just started to shine. His knowledge and game sence is comparable to the one of Artosis'.

Quite nice casting combo, but i feel that Totalbiscuit needs to improve his game knowledge or keep pulling funnier and funnier jokes, or else he'll fall to abyss and i don't want d.Apollo being pulled with him.

I swear apollo looks different every time I see him. I didn't recognise him at first when I saw him in person

I would somewhat agree with this a year ago. But TB heard the critique back then and actually learned ALOT by playing etc. He is by far one of the top 3 play-by-play and allround "fun" casters imo. And, by now, i would say that he atleast knows more about the game than your average caster. Also everyone should give him mad love for putting up all of his own stream revenue (and some well deserved donations) as pricemoney for his tournaments.
