UPDATE: VODs have been posted! Click here to see the results.

Back in July TwitchTV, in conjunction with the Japanese StarCraft 2 Community, announced the very first JP Community TwitchTV Cup Series event. Four cups took place during the months of July and August, with the top two finishers of each cup qualifying for the Grand Finals.

This weekend, Saturday and Sunday starting at 12:00 GMT (+00:00), we are excited to present to you the GRAND FINALS (Click here to see the official announcement). The 8 qualified players from the previous cups will face off for approximately $1000 + tons of gear from Steelseries in prizes.

We hope this event can give exposure to the Japanese StarCraft scene in new and exciting ways. The overall goal is to bring the Japanese players to the forefront of TeamLiquid, /r/starcraft. and the general StarCraft community at large, and encourage growth in the Japanese RTS eSports scene. We hope you take the time to tune into the event, or catch the VODs afterwards, and support the SC2 scene in glorious Nippon!

About the tournament:
We at TwitchTV are proud to announce the first Starcraft 2 JP Community TwitchTV Cup Series! This event is targeted at promoting growth in Japanese eSports by offering a large prize pool (approximately $1000 + hardware from Steelseries), great competition, and professional broadcasts in both Japanese and English. We hope this tournament will expose the top-talent in the land of the rising sun, and encourage more Japanese players to go “pro” in SC2! Additionally, the event will feature Novice, Expert, and Master class divisions, which will allow players of all skill levels to participate and have fun playing Starcraft 2 in a competitive environment.

Japanese RTS?

I need to sit for a moment and try to comprehend this.

If we can't find an English streamer in EU, myself and Gunrun might end up casting this on GLHF.tv. Start time is 5AM for us -__-;

Japanese + StarCraft 2? Oh my. I actually didn't know it was "big" at all in Japan. This makes me really happy to see and it's great that eSports is being promoted there as well! Hoping their scene will continue to grow like EU/NA/KR and we'll see some insane JP apm and micro!

Hey, Japan did send a few BW players to the 2010 WCG, though they got crushed pretty badly. I think Jaedong remarked that one of them played like a computer.

Anyways, this should be an interesting glimpse into the mysterious Japanese scene.

I feel like there's tons of potential for growth in Japanese eSports. Japan has historically not been good at RTS, FPS, or MOBA, but the fighting game scene has developed awesomely. Gives me hope, man.

They did much better as IEF 2009, both nazomen and redskirt won two games in their groups

Very interested to see how good Japanese SC2 players are. Would be awesome if there was some super sick player that we don't know of.

Sadly, I don't really have the best impression of the capabilities Japanese RTS players have if the only Japanese RTS games I've seen were on the NDS...

Best of luck to them though. I never knew there was a Japanese scene to begin with. What server do they even play on? o-o

Always encouraging to see growth in the Japanese scene.

There's also a Japanese caster who just started up on YouTube

Well, in the beginning, amazon.co.jp sold the NA version of SC2, so that's what they started out with, but to be honest, I don't know if that's the server they still play on. I tried to compile some information about the Japanese scene a year back or so and put it into a Liquipedia article ((Wiki)Japanese SC2 scene), which would answer your first question (which wasn't really a question, I know). Unfortunately, the article hasn't been kept updated, but at least it shows that the Japanese have been trying to get things going for a while.

Jaedong remarked that about Kazakhstan's player. The japanese invite (some D+/C- guy) to IEF won against machine in one of the most hilarious ZvZ matches ever.

Most of them still play on the NA server while some of them play on the Taiwan and Korean servers as well. You can find more information about them here, including where they hang out, etc.: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=199890

No man you don't get it, there is no such thing as esports or competitive gaming outside of starcraft.

BTW, we are still looking for English streamers for this event. Please pass the message on to anyone you think would fit the bill!

As much fun as it would be to cast this, I've had no social life for weeks because of too much traveling. Don't exactly want to kill my entire weekend to wake up at 5AM but will do it if I gotta ;D

I think I never saw a match with someone from Japan, really looking forward to it. Nice prices, just looked it up and it´s ~1:100 for euro:yen, so quite an amount of money, especially with hardware prices as well.
You should add the [ time] [ /time] tags in your OP (without the space in the bracket), this will translate it to every viewers timezone who set it in his profile. Always minimates confusion 12:00 GMT (+00:00) starting time.
Good luck with it!

You should not say the rest, if you are looking for a caster :D
The best will be if you contact a caster you see on the right bar. Special Endrey is always likely to cast some matches. He´s quite active on TL, so just PM him if you want.
Don´t open a thread to search one, they normally get closed, contact one directly if possible.

Part of the reason SC2 isn't terribly popular in Japan is because it is not sold there nor localized there. I was there this past summer and you can only buy SC2 in specialty "foreign game" shops in electronic store districts, like Akihabara, for a significant premium.

That being said, I am really glad to see some Japanese players involved in the SC2 scene!

It is coming this Saturday! Any of 8 players are famous in Japanese community, including breek as a WCG2011 Japanese national player. I believe it must be very fun.

Yes, there are some pro-gamers in the field of Fighting game. Actually they do think that they are a part of "esports", but just they do not say so because "esports" is not major in Japan. I am an admin of GODSGARDEN and sometimes talk with Japanese pro-gamers.

Blizzard localized Brood War for Japanese, but not Korean or Chinese (as far as I know) and it didn't sell at all. That's probably why they didn't move to localize Starcraft 2.

We only get one JTV ad. It's a hand soap thing.

It used to fuck JTV up, but that could easily just be my PC and not a regional thing. They fixed the issue though.

EDIT: Just wanted to answer your little query. I'm enjoying the cast, thanks.

We only get one JTV ad. It's a hand soap thing.

It used to fuck JTV up, but that could easily just be my PC and not a regional thing. They fixed the issue though.

EDIT: Just wanted to answer your little query. I'm enjoying the cast, thanks.

Thanks for satisfying my curiosities :D

Watching some of the VODs right now. This is awesome stuff. The Japanese metagame is so vastly different than what I've seen before. Build orders, building placements, wall offs, upgrades are all ... unique

WOW i have heard that japanese pronunciation usually comes pretty easy if you are swedish, and i think his accent sounds really similar to a swede speaking english, only apart from the "R" thingie they have. This isn't the first time i've heard japanese people speaking english but i hadn't noticed this before so i wonder is his accent purely japanese?
