The game may not have much riding on it, but to the Koreans their actions were very unprofessional. Byun cusses and tells Coca to leave so they can have game 3 when Byun clearly lost. Coca, surprisingly, accepts and went on to lose game 3 too. In the Koreans' eyes they have disregarded their duties as pro-gamers by throwing away games and have wronged fans that were watching
Not to mention this brings back the horrendous memory of fixed matches. (although this exactly wasn't fixed, in that it was done on the spot)
Boxer also mentions the past incident in scbw in the thisisgame website interview when announcing that they've sent Coca home from the Slayers House, showing that the Koreans are dead serious about removing ANY sort of foul play in order not to repeat the past mistake. and stuff.

pretty much, they should just remove him imo
I wonder what prime will do about Byun

EDIT: Just read coca is off slayers, good. Sorry to him, he seems like a nice kid and I love his zvp but this is fucked up.
he's not off slayers, just demoted to B team and sent home.

my mistake. I guess it's good to demote until things cool down and the truth outs.

The thing about him still being in the team is, they announced he won't be sent out to ANY tournaments until further notice. If he had been kicked out of Slayers, he'd be free to enter tournaments. Keeping him in the team but out of tournaments is the punishment.

Hardly. It just looks like two players screwing around. If it was actual match-fixing I doubt they'd be so blatant.

Yeah, it's not match fixing since it wasn't a plan hatched in advance.
Two stupid kids fucking around. Coca bears the brunt of the blame, though, since he accepted Byun's plea and threw the game. He should have known better.

I really can't figure out why this is a big deal. I know savior happened, but ... we're really worried about this?

I think so too. It is WAY too blatantly obvious and idiotic to match fix like that - I mean, being up 100 supply and gg'ing, typing in chat for everyone to see, etc. Plus, as indicated by what happened to Byun against Creator, getting past the Ro32 doesn't mean much.
However, just the fact that Coca obviously just spontaneously decided to forfeit just so his friend could advance is disappointing. If he doesn't care about this tournament, why is he playing in the first place? Having Code S status shouldn't preclude him from the tournament, but signing up also means taking it seriously and showing some integrity.
I think the punishment dished out by Slayers is admirable, considering Coca is their best Zerg, and has huge potential both in Code S and abroad.

coca should've just pulled a naniwa and leave without gg.

Woah. This has certainly exploded, seemingly way out of proportion. But I recognize the concern, and I suppose these types of antics have no place in a serious tournament.
|
Attempting to see the upside to this horrid mess, the reaction does seem to indicate that the Koreans see the ESV Korean Weekly as a very serious tournament worthy of respect. That's something for ESV to be proud of.

why is this a problem for these qualifiers, and not so for the nestea/mvp thrown game(s) at MLG?

Because there is zero non-circumstantial evidence that happened. Indeed, Idra seems quite convinced there is no in-game evidence that any match fixing happened. He discussed it one or two STOGs ago; sorry I don't have an exact pointer.

I'm interested to see what happens to Byun as well, as Cocas punishment seems to be pretty significant.

My statement:
On November 15 2011 15:12 Diamond wrote: Ok I have read everything over and it is without a doubt what CoCa and Byun did was 100% wrong. They took away the very spirit the Korean Weekly was built on. While it was created to have a quick, fun tournament for Koreans and inject more money into the scene, it is just that, a tournament, a competition. What CoCa and Byun did was incredibly stupid, and ruins the very foundation the tournament itself is based on (the best player wins).
However I am a man that has made more mistakes in my life then I care to admit. CoCa and Byun are both very young and I in no way feel this was a highly premeditated incident like the Savior incident. They deserve a second chance, but not one without punishment.
Until January 1st, 2012 CoCa and Byun are both suspended from the Korean Weekly. We hope they will use this time to look upon themselves and to make sure this never happens again. Additionally the suspension cannot be lifted without the direct approval of their respective coaches (both the time and approval requirements must be met). I feel this will give them the time they need to work past whatever made them do this. They will also be ineligible for any qualified spots in the next Korean Weekly Finals.
In the meantime I will be looking at alternate formats for the Korean Weekly that will somehow separate Code A and S players from Code B. I do not know what the system is yet, but I will be working on it during our two week break.
I am sorry to everyone.

So is IdrA getting kicked from EG too? He gave away 2 of his wins.

Pretty big difference between match fixing and simple collusion.... losing so your team mate or chosen opponent makes a tourney is not the same as throwing a game for money...
example: I'm playing someone I KNOW I can beat 9 times out of 10. If I lose, he gets a slot in GSL, which I already have. This increases the likelihood that I will play someone I have a very high chance to win against in a later tournament where it matters.
Compare that to savior. Bets assloads of money against himself, then loses on purpose, in the biggest event.
Two different levels of bad there...
|
wow looking at the supply from both players on those pics, looks like Coca was still hella strong.
I'm scared for both of them
|
A serious crime in Korea would definitely be discussed across the game that they are playing and being casted in... sounds like the completely smart thing to do
They're PROBABLY 90% not match fixing. Why on earth would they discuss it over the game? They're obviously just not taking the series seriously if it isn't for Code A and has a small prize
Wait did Coca lose the game? What I just said is all wrong then
