He trains with the rest of the foreigners at the GOM House. So that's people like Torch, Spades and Oak.

he didn't see either of the factories or hellions until pretty late, probably expected only marines and maybe a few tanks

Having all those blings in the middle of the map screwed him - he would have been able to hold off that push if he had been defensive/on creep.
