On Saturday February the 26th There will be a lan tournament in Toronto. The event will be COMPLETELY FREE as so say no entry fee, no donations and as of now there is a 600$ prize pool however consider that a minimum and I intend to at least double that. The event will be streamed online. I'm seeing about renting a bar or theater right next to the internet cafe for spill over. Anyway I'd love to see how much interest and no matter what league you are in, you should play in the tournament (It's free and I guarantee you will have fun) The brackets can be found at http://challonge.com/torontolan
Where: The event will take place at the Infiniti Cafe that is 3030 Don Mills Road East, Toronto, ON How do you get there via TTC: + Show Spoiler +
1. Go east to Don Mills Station. 2. Go to the bus terminal, transfer to the 25 Don Mills; make sure you go to the NORTHBOUND platform. 3. Take the 25 Don Mills to Deerford Road. 4. Cross the street and walk towards the "Peanut Plaza"; There will be signs out pointing you to the cafe
thanks Dojobear for the instructions

The online tournament will begin on Saturday feb 12 at 12:00am and the winners bracket up to the round of 32 should be completed by soon that is to say the Preliminaries, Round 1, Round 2 and Round 3 should be completed soon. Please try to be online for Saturday as I would like to try and complete most matches this weekend. If you are busy for Saturday the 12th and Sunday the 13th please arrange with your opponent to play the match as soon as possible through battlenet or here
The losers bracket will become it's own tournament with it's own prize and will be played online only next month you do not need to play anymore round in the losers bracket for the time being.

Players will pick maps to remove in succession, the player seeded closest to the top picks first.

I encourage EVERYONE TO ASK EVERYONE they know to play. It's completely free and I'd love to see that 256 bracket fill so I can open another :>

chromate, maybe you should have some backups to fill in if people don't show for their game 32 match. Especially since your events kick ass, there will be alot of people from out of province who fill want to give 1/32 shot at winning 600 bucks (or more, you're a badass) for a free online tourney. If they win, they might not be dedicated enough to show.
Essentially, I guess you could just fill it in with people who finished in the R64 (or even a playoff from top contenders at the LAN?)
Hey I hope this goes really well, Toronto deserves more tournies! Is the online portion going to be double elim? I'd recommend that, just incase some of the more dedicated players take each other out in the early rounds.
I'm probably going to get smashed one way or another, but sign me up! :D
It'd be cool to meet some Toronto/GTA area folks.
On February 05 2011 12:49 MeanJeans wrote: Is there a bus route that takes me somewhere close? Whenever I go to Toronto I usually go somewhere downtown.
The 25 Don Mills runs through that plaza, which frequently runs buses so it shouldn't be too hard via transit. I think YRT buses on their way to Don Mills Station run through there too.

Damnit that is during reading week and I am traveling and wont be back until Sunday. I would have definitely liked to play in this. Glad to see Toronto having an sc2 LAN tho, thats wicked and I will support future LAN's if there are any!
I can`t wait!!! The net cafe is sorta in the middle of nowhere but its all good. If anyone needs a ride i`ll be driving (Toronto area) Like you can meet me at finch station and i can drive from there etc.
p.s. Chrome are you doing any type of seeding by ladder points
On February 06 2011 04:22 ionlyplayPROtoss wrote: Anyone know if theres gonna be a seeding system in the online qualifiers?
what kind of system do you mean, like the best play the worst
For example, 2 of the better players play each other early on in qualifiers and one of them loses meaning one the better players is eliminated a lot earlier than he should be while the lesser players can gets lucky play each other and avoid the better ones. Do you have any idea to prevent this from happening because I would imagine you would want the best players at the lan instead of 20 good ones and 12 people that got lucky during qualifiers.
Also do you have any ideas for prize distribution like a more spread out one such as 5/10/20/40 for 5-8/3-4/2/1 or just like a 50/30/20 for 1/2/3

I was hoping by having a double elimination It would work out however I might hand pick a few people and make sure they are on different sides. That said If you expect me to look up 256 players on sc2 ranks and try to pair them all up correctly using the broken challonge system it isn't happening.
As for the prize I was thinking of just having it between first and second but once I get more money into this I will probably make it the top 8. Not really sure how I will divide it but I'd prefer to make it fair to people who don't get first.
When's a tentative date for the online preliminaries? I have to make a 4 hr trip so I would prefer to know in advance whether or not I'm allowed to compete in the Canadian part of the tourney
On February 06 2011 08:00 Kammalleri wrote: Or you could have different group stage too..
Like 256 players it's 64 groups of 4 or 32 groups of 8.
Half the people make it thru..
Reset the groups, same pattern, half people make it thru.
if you have more sick players than how many people are qualified well it's too bad.. It happens in every tournament you can't control that
It's not a bad idea but a lot more work, I think double elimination will work fine enough

I'm pretty sure the online preliminaries aren't going to just be one day, I'm probably just going to give everyone 3 days to for each round or something like that. Anyway just sign up for the tournament, it's free so if you can't come you can't come no loss. the online part should end at least a week before the 26th so you will have plenty of time so work things out. If I may ask where are you coming from anyway?
Looks like there is a 1% chance of me showing up, and that 1% is if I get fired which isn't likely to happen. Sorry chromate, I would love to make my way to Toronto to cast but I just found out I've got about 30 hours of work from Friday night into Sunday that weekend
I noticed a few people in Toronto needing to know how to get to the cafe by TTC so here is a helpful link http://www3.ttc.ca/Trip_planner/index.jsp Just thought I should share
arf forgot his character code, he is arfz.493 as well, his id is arf.493, so if you could erase arf and take the Z away or something before you make brackets, thanks.
is there any way to gurantee a media spot at the cafe? i will be doing some coverage for it for my blog and would like to do interviews and such, i can't do them from next door
There isnt a Rank requirement or anything right? I know i would have likely 0 chance at getting very far since im high Plat. (maybe ill be Diamond by the time the tourni gets going) but id still love to play in it for fun

Far from it, I'd love for all players to enter. It's a lot of fun and there just might be a prize to one random player who has entered regardless of the league your in.
Arg... Toronto the worst place to hold tourney. Everyone is so pro since its practically all asians in this district. Well i'll give it a shot. Gl to all participants and hope to see you in round 32.

On another note I'm an idiot, how can you hold the winners bracket at the round of 32 and the losers bracket at the round of 8 at the same :/
I'm changing it to the winners bracket will be played up to the round of 16 online and the losers bracket up to the round of 16 online the rest will be played at the LAN
Updated the OP, the 4 online rounds of the winners bracket will take place this weekend and the losers bracket will be played out throughout the following week.
I think it's better next week between 17th-20th so there's more time or preparation for people either for practicing, scheduling, booking off etc. Since the 12th is just around the corner and probably late notice for a lot of ppl. Personally I'm ok with any date though

It's better earlier for people who are deciding whether or not to make the long drive out there.
Def. wouldnt prefer the weekend of the 19th, single elim sucks imo =/
Also since it is so much closer to the LAN date and must all be done in one weekend there is much much less flexibility in scheduling matches for the online segment.
Alright it will be this weekend/next week, please try your best to complete the matches as soon as possible. The brackets will be up on Saturday at 12:00am.
Also, registration is closing soon last chance to enter, tell your friends
Since i'm fairly certain i'll be knocked out in the online portion will it still be cool to come to cafe and watch the finals? like will there be enough viewer seating?

Nope it's absolutely free. Also it's the round of 16 winners bracket and loser bracket now.

Shouldn't be a problem, however I'm going to have everyone who wants to come message me (not now but closer to the date) so I can make sure we have room.
You have the whole week to play the matches if your absolutely busy this weekend its no problem also this Saturday the cyber cafe is the place to be, I'm with you galleon.
Isn't there a good chance of people who can't even make it to the tournament but sign up anyways from only-god-knows-where location and knocks out some good players?
I don't think this would be a big problem in general but if too many people from way outside the area sign up you won't get many people at the lan?

agreed, im seeing some notable players from the US who are signed up for it. Im not doubting that they wont show up for the lan, but their sole purpose might be to have fun and crush people online and be done with it.

It says on the OP that to sign up for the tournament you must be committed to coming to the LAN. I would assume all those top players know this.

Im having the same problem, my opponent is vs a placeholder still. And i really like to get these games underway
I don't mean to be rude but I think this is a little disorganized, most of us have no idea when our opponents are on and there's no real deadline to complete our first rd matches, I have other priorities and i'm sure my opponent does too. I was on the majority of yesterday (which is the only time I had this weekend) and some this morning and my opponent has yet to show, it's not like he's inactive because he does have recent games recorded.
I suggest we set a date where we just finish the tournament up to the ro16 in one day or two days, if people don't show up, tough luck, we report the absence and get a default win. I don't know how much time i'll have during the week and hopefully my opponent comes on at the same time i do, but just a suggestion, no hate chromate, keep it going! :D and glad youre doing this

I've been really considering something like this, from my previous tournaments I was able to run it like this but they were much smaller and I don't think it scales up. I'm going to talk to a few friends and see what they think. Thanks
IMHO i think people that don't have character codes or they cannot be added (such as my example of the person having a wrong character code cause they're name is correct, i found it on sc2ranks) should be auto DQ'd since it's holding up the bracket
Personally I think the tournament is going great and it's as organized as can be with lots of flexibility for people. With this much freedom, it could be going a lot worse (it's actually not even bad in any way at all), I'd say just appreciate that this is even happening. With a week still left, I'm sure all the matches will get done one way or another as most of us play SC2 pretty frequently I'm sure. I seriously can't blame someone who isn't able to play 1 or 2 days in, the tournament just started. People should just relax, it's not a rush to complete your games really, it'll get done....
With the set date limit, too many undeserving players will get free default wins. I mean I can understand if the opponent pulls a no show even till like tues/weds but cmon, 2 days in and we're complaining about a no show? You can easily complete 1-3 rounds even in a matter of a day or two, especially since when you get to round 2 and beyond, I'm sure players are more active, the 1st round is obviously probably gonna take longer because of newer players who signed up etc and this tournament isn't in any way in the pro level so flexibility is the best way to go for everyone to enjoy the tournament.
On February 14 2011 02:57 gameupz wrote: With the set date limit, too many undeserving players will get free default wins. I mean I can understand if the opponent pulls a no show even till like tues/weds but cmon, 2 days in and we're complaining about a no show?
Punctual players deserve to win, even by default. It's unfair for some having to wait for 2 days, spending hours online just waiting for their opponent to show up -- to me that's just BM. I'm sure you would be pissed off if you had to wait for your bus to show up and it does not for 2 days
Will video or replays be posted of the event? would love to see some canadian gameplay since I can't get down to Toronto to play SC2 (live in Ottawa but I can't justify the cost)
Well ive been on pretty much 2 days straight looking for my opponent. Im DucKsiDE.279, my opponent is arf. i checked his match history and apparently his last game was about 6 days ago so he hasnt been active at all.... Thats quite annoying, what do i do?

I agree Antimage, I think deadlines should've been like ro256 by saturday, 128 by sunday, 64 by monday, etc.. Because it seems like people are just procrastinating their matches.

After all of these you may contact me on battlenet in the channel SCtoronto or at Chromate.878 You may also contact me by messaging me on team liquid. Note: If you have not completed the previous and still get me to a eliminate your opponent you may be disqualified and have your shit slapped.

I talked to my opponent the other day, but we weren't able to play at that time and I've been incredibly busy since. Feel free to drop me from the event - I doubt I'll make top 32/16 anyways. I'll probably show up at the LAN though .

Alright It's time to start dropping player from the preliminary's, for me to give you the win the following must be true First, You have had no contact with the player Second, You have checked all the pages and have posted on http://www.l2sc.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=340 (You must give the player at least 24 hours from when you post) Third, You have checked your opponents match history and he has not played a game in the last few days Fourth, Spend 5 minutes right now and check the last few pages of the team liquid thread, check http://www.l2sc.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=340 again and check the brackets to make sure both your name and battle net code are there/ you have the right opponent.
After all of these you may contact me on battlenet in the channel SCtoronto or at Chromate.878 You may also contact me by messaging me on team liquid. Please tell me in your message that you have seen this check list and have passed all 4 criteria Note: If you have not completed the previous and still get me to a eliminate your opponent you may be disqualified.

I'll be able to play tomorrow after 5-6ish. if you see this, please post and tell me what time you'll be on, because it's so hard to get in touch with you.
Errr, you only finished your round 1 match yesterday and I was online all day today... So I don't quite understand what you mean by you've been trying to get in touch with me all weekend.
In any case, I'll be on tomorrow after 4:00 pm for most of the night. I'll also be able to play tonight as well, just message me on TL saying you want to play.
(ionlyplayPROtoss) Allen if that's you I talked to you yesterday, someone on the account was claiming "this is not Allen." So I have no idea whats going on there. I can play tomorrow during the day, I have class today until 10PM EST.

I won't be home tuesday night, can you tell the winner of the match to play Wednesday night? I will be available most of the day (6pm-12am). Contact me via TL pm or bnet. thanks.
STILL no response from oscatron. i posted on the forums and its been nearly 24 hours (not yet) but no words from him at all . no pm / didnt email / nothing on the forums
Man i drew an absolutely brutal portion of the bracket, hate how that happens soemtimes, so how far in the losers bracket do we have to go to make it to the actual lan
I don't think the brackets are actually going to be finished in time unless you start giving automatic losses if people are not on daily for their games. basically 3 days and most people are only 2 rounds in. I'm in third round waiting on opponents to play their first round games.

i agree it's about time to start dropping people from the brackets, if they havent done their first round game yet
the only downside i see is certain people getting easier entry then others due to this, which would be unfortunate
my opponent told me he'd be available to play no sooner than Thursday night at 8 PM. I'm taking a flight the next day for a LAN and won't be able to play until Monday.. just FYI.

Just another reason why I love challonge, in fact I love it so much that I'm currently working with a new friend of mine :> on a new php coded bracket system.
For now you will have to live with challonge though, I suggest you just hover the mouse over the name.
I'm not sure if I'll ever get to play my 2nd game in losers bracket. I don't really belong there either.
I played my first series even if I was lagging quite a bit not to slow down the tourny and I realize I coulda wait another 2 weeks before playing first round games.
Did Daqi.199 and jonafun just ditch? Been waiting for a few days for them to play and then sTksooch to play the winner, but it doesn't seem like they're doing anything >.>
waiting for mnmfireball and grifith to play their games so I can finally get my next match going on... that is still a first round match for them. It's def time to start removing all the afkers <_<
Please just enforce some sort of rule or something, Ive waited patiently 4 days now for my second match. If you dont play a certain date you both get dq'ed or something..
On February 17 2011 10:21 tercet wrote: Please just enforce some sort of rule or something, Ive waited patiently 4 days now for my second match. If you dont play a certain date you both get dq'ed or something..
I hear you tercet, we've been trying to be very patient as there have been other turny's and what not but ya, it's frustrating.
I think anyone without a friend code should just be auto disqualified otherwise it just takes too long to figure that whole ordeal out when only 1 person is capable of being added while the other is not, it becomes a waiting game which stalls everyone else. And by auto disqualified I mean completely taken out of the tournament (like don't transfer them to the losers bracket) chances are they are AFK for the tourney so yeah
Cause honestly when I look through the bracket, it's mostly all the ones with no friend code that didn't show up and the opponents got a default win (showing 1-0). So might as well just take them out completely to narrow it down and make everything easier

What rounds are the "prelims"? I have already played my first match but can't seem to contact my 2nd round guy...
So.... considering the fact there is no way in hell this is going to get down to 32 people by the 26th, can we just show up at the location on the 26th and compete?

guys, feel free to direct score report or simple question to me. I'm trying to take some of busy work of chromates sholders, considering the size of this thing
I can't even play my matches in the bracket because one of the people in the winners is still in R2 for some odd reason even though they haven't played a single game yet. mnmfireball.
Hi, I can't compete in this anymore since I don't think my team can send me to this to play offline. Could you please remove me, or have my previous opponent advance? thank you and sorry

Chromate im suppose to play CNova.752 for the second round of the tourney and have been on for 3 days waiting for this guy but he hasnt played in like 4days. Can you jus advance me im Spectrum.705
Been waiting for my opponent to finish his LB R1 match for like 5 days now, his opponent has been removed and he still hasnt advanced himself, he is also missing a friend code his name is just MGcHarger, judging from his first match he may just be afk for the whole tourny but I'm not too sure =/
If you happen to read this MGcHarger, please msg me asap vvvdotiso.202.
@ sTksooch, I'll be around late tonight (like 1AM) if you want to play, but I'll be around all day tomorrow too due to reading week so whenever is cool.
It's not like there are actually that many games to play, you could just say like people who haven't finished their games yet have to log on at some time (Thursday or Friday night) and play the rest of their games otherwise they're DQ'd.

well i had a really frustrating bracket draw this time around, 3 straight top level zergs, my worse matchup, well it was fun, if you end of reworking things, i'll be checking it out, but otherwise enjoy the lan
ALRIGHT GUYS PLAN B so lesson learned should have put everything on one day, anyway what's going to happen is the LAN is going to be the top 32 from the winners bracket the losers bracket will not be played at the lan. Play up to the fourth round online.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE LOSERS BRACKET I WASTED SO MUCH TIME, nope the losers bracket is going to become it's own tournament with it's own prize, I will be setting a date for the bracket to be played, you do not have to play the losers bracket for the time being (unless you want to)

so is the top 32 at the lan still double elimination?
masq ive been on a lot the past few days where you at bro?
another question do all these people even live in toronto? because if they don't its pretty much impossible for them to make it at this point it seems.
Hey chromate, this is NrgHumble I just found out that I cannot make it this weekend. I was wondering if I can play online and if not, you can assign my position to someone else. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I've been on for weeks before this week. I'm at home due to my study week and I don't have much time to play. Pick a specific time and I'll figure something out to be online.
edit: just checked to see if you were online, you're not. As I said twice already, can you message me with your typical playtime?
been waiting for redout.108 and mnmfireball.664 to play for a couple of days now...... doesn't look like they are even trying to get in contact with each other from what i see (this is namkung.833)
i heard it will be just for the winner side of the bracket. Is it going to be double elimination format for those top 32? and 1 more thing, if someone decide to not show up can ppl from loser's bracket replace them?

I just reported that Masq beat me so you guys can keep this moving along. I managed to take a game off him though . Id still like to play through the losers bracket if that is still even happening...

yea im still awaiting for my 4th round opponent.. so what's going to happen? do i show up tommorow or do i wait?
i probbably would have made the trip for this but couldnt manage to find a ride as someone posted earlier, why not just make it a true LAN next time and skip the online qualifiers.
It's 100% on and happening, I understand people feeling concerned. And I'm sorry they do.
No doubt there is 0 chance it will be run the same way again, between choosing dates that conflict with the TSL (causing us to decide to not have hard deadlines to be fair to people... ugh) then the online bracket being unmanagable, and having a lot of people new to turnys involved it's been a strange fun trip. But we're learning.
I'll be there tomorrow for anyone frustated to kick in the balls, or just I'll buy you a drink/coke
THIS IS THE GAME PLAN, if you have not played your matches up to the fourth round you must come at 10am to the cafe you will play your matches out before the tournament begins at 12:00
You can come and spectate but please contact me first, I can't have 200 people come.
Thanks for coming everyone, for the record it was a 800$ prize pool (400$-200$-100$-and 20$ for the top 8). I'll keep you guys updated and will definitely be putting on more events. For VOD's you can see http://www.justin.tv/ascendtv/b/280481998 and I will be uploading the recordings by our camera man ICE soonish. Thank you everyone for coming and to everyone who helped
