It's probably done to protect the second who would if he loses to the third (not too unlikely) be very likely to face the first. The way it's done increases the expected outcome that the first two face the lower two (in order to confirm the a priori assertion that the first two are better than the last two). Both 3 and 4 need to demonstrate that they can consistenly beat either one of the two above them. | ||
