Personally I think NONE of the players actually "represent a country", they are just "gifted individuals who happen to be born somewhere". There is no real national championships anywhere, but the "citziens of the USA" like to add this competition between nationalities to everything. Obviously - as a not-so-old citizen of Germany - I dont think national pride is really that good for world peace as too much of it will start wars. Thats why I dont think putting too much of it into this game will actually help, because it doesnt improve the game in any form whatsoever.

That's because the United States are a loose collection of sovereign states. Usually the proper term is to say "Californian" or "Floridian", etc. Otherwise American is the only used term. When people ask me what i am I usually respond Californian.

Also, whoever is arguing that "American" means North + South American is really powering up on his pedantry. The vernacular standard in all English-speaking communities is that "American" means someone who's associated with the U.S.A. I highly doubt you'll ever find someone who'll genuinely ask for clarification when they hear the word "American.
