On November 28 2010 08:52 FXOpen wrote: Dear Gamers,
After a bad mixup with the timings, and alot of disappointed gamers. I'd like to apologise once again for what has happened. We did not realise that the time would be such a problem as we were looking at our local time (The time displayed by the TL timezone) in order to make our decisions. With things being such a mess, the brackets ended up being 1 player walking through to the semi finals. So, as the show had to go on, we create new brackets with all players who were ACTIVE in the chatroom and found 64 players. There were alot of AFKers in the chat room understandably, but trying to get as many games played as possible, I had to miss them. And they were disappointed understandably. I apologise sincerely.
What are we going to do? Well, over the holiday period we will be working intensively to get our own site and automatic tournament management system set up where players will be repsonsible for reporting games, and administration will simply enforce rules. This will make everything run as smooth as the 2nd brackets did without any issues. On top of that, our website will DISPLAY a count down timer for every tournament, as well as the streams for every event.
On top of this, FXOpen will be looking to recruit players into its team that are not inside russia (we already have a russian team) and are looking strongly at the SEA and south american countries for players. Note that due to forex regulation, we cannot sponsor an entire team from the US, although specific players from the US may happen.
Our next tournament will kick off somewhere towards the end of January, early february, so we have time to sort out any hiccups, and fix the problems that occured with this event. This event, is most probably invite only, and will consist of players around the world. We may throw out a few wild card spots with a public vote of players, or a panel. And work on a relegation system to allow new players to circulate as they improve.
I have not black listed anyone from this event, except 1 person who was extremely offensive and incoherrent. This player make a disgusting attack on myself and various other people. They know who they are.
Again I apologise for the mix up.
On another note, as sheth has so kindly posted the fxopen2 brackets, we are now heading into the final of the event (The show must go on). Sheth is up against optikzero in the semi final, and the winner will take on Capoch in the grand final (play off for $1000).
We have seen extremely exciting games from Optikzero so far, as with Sheth. And Capoch has taken down 2 big SEA names to get to his position, Moonglade and Edge.
We will be streaming replays of the finals at 3pm AEST, 12pm Singapore, 7am Moscow, 11pm NEW YORK.
Our good friends at sc2tv.ru will also be streaming those replays for all to see.
I would like to make a big shout out to optikzero and darkcell_ who are the most patient gamers I have ever met. Although there were alot of patient gamers, I think optikzero waited a very long time for his first game because of no shows, and darkcell the same + a stuff up also made him have to wait even longer. These guys are true gamers and have shown excellent ettiquette and patience.
Also, thank you to SiF and Unstable for casting the event, and sc2tv.ru as well for their excellent support.
Regards,
We apologise for the issues this has caused and will rectify this for any future events. FXOpen http://www.fxopen.com is proud to announce its sponsored tournament "In the rear with the Gear" Hosted by Clan 2bh http://www.2bh.org.

FXOpen is one of the largest retail foreign exchange (forex) broker in the world with a strong interest in esports and starcraft 2 this is the first of many events to come!
UPDATE BRACKETS POSTED!
Tournament brackets can be found here: http://challonge.com/fxopen (if we missed you I truely apologise but this was origionally a 128 player bracket we will be more comprehensive next time)
Games listed under PRELIMINARIES can be played prior to the 27th of November. If you play your game prior to the 27th of November, please email the result + replay to manager@fxoceania.com to confirmation. It is not compulsory to play your preliminaries before the 27th, however it would be best that as many of these games are played as possible in order to have a smoother event. Please note, we seeded 32 players, some of them randomly, the others based on reputation and location (we seeded some of the TOP SEA players NA players, etc). Note that this is the first of many tournaments to come, and future seeding will be based on past results for all events (even live events).
Streamers: Unstable TV! with Unstable & Sephyre: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/unstable-tv1 SC2TV.RU! http://sc2tv.ru/
The tournament format is as follows: DAY 1 BO1 until RO32 PRELIMINARIES – METALOPOLIS (ro512) ROUND 1 – LOST TEMPLE (ro256) ROUND 2 – XEL’NAGA (ro128) ROUND 3 - Shakuras Plateu (ro64) ROUND 4 - Veto system starts now! (ro32) END OF DAY 1
DAY 2 ROUND 5 (ro16) ROUND 6 Quarter Finals ROUND 7 Semi Finals ROUND 8 BO5 final and play off
This we feel is the best format to keep time and interest in the tournament. We understand that some people have a tough road to the RO32, I apologise if you feel so. But I assure you this won’t be the case for any future tournaments.
ON THE DAY PLAYERS SHOULD LOOK TO TURN UP AT LEAST 15 MINUTES EARLY In order to be eligible to play and report your matches, you must log into the 2bh chat by going to http://2bh.org/ and clicking on web chat.
There will be a chat room with 4 administrators. FXOPEN, Will, unstable and another person from 2bh will be admining the tournament. You must log in to chat to report all games/problems to the administrators. If you do not report them, the results will not count. If you cannot find your opponent, its likely you will find them in chat. If you are in chat and they do not show up in 15 minutes after start time, they will forfeit. Also be aware that an admin may request to stream your game. Tournament rules state that FXOpen holds the rights to stream any game they wish. Please note, if you wish to participate in the creative strategy prize, you must send your replays to manager@fxoceania.com with the subject “MOST CREATIVE” you MUST WIN your match in order to be eligible. You may nominate an opponent if you see fit. Finally, if you do not declare a scratching PRIOR to the 27th of November, you will be blacklisted for the next 5 FXOpen events (including live events). We are happy to host events for the community, but please do right by us and if you do not intend on showing up, or think you may not be able to, please scratch yourself from the event. It makes everything so much easier on everyone.

I'd like to say a huge thanks to Unstable for helping me organise this event. And thank you to 2bh for helping with ideas and being part of the map panel and creative win panel.
Let it be known that this is not a one off event for us. We are looking at taking things all the way.
We have invited a few professional teams to watch our streams of this event in the hope of creating a new environment for western gamers (Australia in particular). I won't name names. But just know they will be there.
I will be organising the event on the day/s and helping conduct interviews with random gamers.
I request that anyone approached by tournament admin to do some media, take up the opportunity. Its always fun to get your name out there and would be a great help in reaching our goals.
If you have any questions for myself or regarding the event please feel free to send me a pm.
See you all on the day.

Please feel free to post any questions you have about the event in this thread and I will do my very best to answer them.

btw trying to mark my calendar but im a bit confused here:
Date 27th and 28th of November 2010 Friday, Nov 26 6:00pm PST Saturday, Nov 27 11:00pm PST
Which days is it O.o
|

Hi Guys,
Please pay attention to the time zones. The listed time zone is GMT. From there, you need to find out what time the start is.
For those in Australia, the time is 12PM Sydney on the 27th and 5pm on the 28th. For those brothers of ours in North America, this means the tournament will be the day PRIOR due to the time differences of up to 17 hours.
Since everyones timezones are different, it is recommended that each player check their individual times to make sure they understand when the tournament truly is. It is complicated for us to list every single time zone.
Thanks alot

Just a comment, it would probably work better if it went
Player A vetoes map W Player B vetoes map X Player B vetoes map Y Player A vetoes map Z
Just to kinda even it out, otherwise player B has a slight advantage in the fact he can react more so to the maps player A is going to veto :o.

Of course...but how do you know if someone deserves it when you invite? In the worst caste you have lots of bad games from bad players because you invite random from the billions of people that register in this thread.
well known players are mostly well known because they already proved themselves.
At least one should check that only High Diamond players participate.

Agree to a point. It is no shame on allowing everyone the experience of participating in a tournament. Most of the people you would consider 'bad' will be knocked out first or second round anyway.
In order to filter through things, we will be seeding top players from each nation playing the "named" players, and they will most probably get through the bo1 without a game. This is just a possibility.
We have more than 256 players at the moment. So now its to the drawing board to make it organised before hand. We will be closing off registration in the next day or two. Just incase anyone missed out.
Unfortunately alot of the big names from SEA are on holidays.. Namely glade, legionnaire. I am still trying to twist their arm to try make it available. But Glades holiday actually sounds a treat.
I will also be looking to interview a few of the seeded players pre-tournament to get their insight, and hopefully make things a little more interesting
So basically my simple response to what you said is. The bo1 is tedious for some. But the RO16 + is going to be EPIC... I dont see any game in RO16 being a disappointment given the players that are in the tournament. Even RO32 will be huge. At least for non 'pro gamers'. I think we will see some real talent in this event, and we are extremely excited about this.

Sign up is now closed. We have 385 players, and feel that this is enough to make the brackets work. We expect a few scratchings in the meantime, so if people are scratched, you will be pm'ed and asked if you wish to participate in which you have 24 hours to reply.
A list of sign ups will be put up in the next 24-48 hours.
Reconfirmation of sign up will be required..
Regards.
You can continue to put your username, ID and race up in the hope of scratchings.
NOTE THAT PLAYERS ROUNDS WILL BE PLAYED AT THE SAME TIME. ANYONE MORE THAN 15 MINUTES LATE WILL FORFEIT. USING DUPLICATE ACCOUNTS TO INCREASE YOUR CHANCES WILL NOT WORK AS YOU ARE REQUIRED TO TURN UP TO YOUR MATCH ON TIME.

It was requested that we gather up all the names anyway due to the number of people posting afterwards. If everyone shows up for the event, this is great as we will have spots for all. But we are expecting a sharp decline closer to the date. Also a number of big names decided to join us and we felt it unfair to only include them instead of the general population so we added both
Sorry I didn't update, have had alot going on behind the scenes .

Reconfirmation will be done via PM on the respective forums. I will do it closer to the date (people may change plans etc).
This hopefully will give us the numbers to create the brackets.
Note there will likely be byes for seeded players in the first round or two depending on numbers. And we will be seeding players in accordance to 1) skill level 2) region 3)when they signed up. So if for instance, Boxer signed up first. He would be seeded 1, unless someone greater than he signed up 2nd.

i could have sworn i signed up for this on a different page.. I guess not though, cause I would have re-joined sooner if I knew I wasnt going to be added.

(ro32) END OF DAY 1
DAY 2 ROUND 5 (ro16) ROUND 6 Quarter finals ROUND 7 Semi Finals! ROUND 8 BO5 final and play off
This we feel is the best format to keep time and interest in the tournament. We understand that some people have a tough road to the RO32, I apologise if you feel so. But I assure you this won’t be the case for any future tournaments.
ON THE DAY PLAYERS SHOULD LOOK TO TURN UP AT LEAST 15 MINUTES EARLY In order to be eligible to play and report your matches, you must log in to web chat at http://2bh.org/chat/

Can I still sign up? If so, my ID is Dynamite.539.
|
There's a mistake. It says Ro16, then Ro8, then quarter finals. But Ro8 is the quarter finals, so Round 6 should be deleted and Round 7-9 given 1 number lower (so that finals is round 8).
|
before I saw we would need to confirm out sign up but now I can't see it in the OP, is it still necessary and how does one go about doing it?
|
Does anyone know anything about the nGen team? I don't know anything about them but I cannot find anything on them, I've tried googling them as well and I just get a CS team. Do they have a webpage? Can anyone link it if they know?
I saw that they have 2 players in this, on ladder I've played a couple of them and would like to know more.

On November 24 2010 00:20 rANDY wrote: before I saw we would need to confirm out sign up but now I can't see it in the OP, is it still necessary and how does one go about doing it?
We changed things so that instead of reconfirmation, you have to scratch yourself if you cannot make it. If you do not scratch yourself, you will be black listed from 5 future events held by FXOpen.
This was easier from a management point of view. As we have over 400 players.
nGen I don't know much about. All I know is they lost to GG/izhere in a clan war recently. GG/izhere has a forum section over at 2bh.org

Congratulations to PocketPurple, for being the first player to proceed past the preliminaries. After watching the reply, if it is a sign of whats to come, this is going to be a very impressive tournament.
Unlucky for Esturlizzuma, after some impressive drop play, he did not manage to beat pocket purples final attack.
Congratulations guys, and very impressive play from both of you.

Lots and lots of no-shows.
|
I have not seen my opponent yet (Mios 567)
|
Just gonna throw down some honest criticism:
1) The scheduled start time was pulled back by an hour very recently which I imagine screwed a lot of people (1pm AEST became 12pm AEST) 2) It's a manually updated system of over 400 competitors, it takes forever for anything to be updated. It's hard to read mod annoucements on a channel where everyone's text is the exact same colour. 3) Because of 2, people are just randomly leaving because there's no way to know whether your reported result of a no-show or a win was recorded, when people are waiting more than playing they leave. Resulting in more no-shows.
Solutions: 1) No idea what happened here. 2) Use a tournament system that automatically adjusts the brackets when players enter a result on a webpage. Doing things manually for a repetitive task is the reason we have programming languages
Ah well, I'm sure it would smooth out once we're past the ro2.
|
I really think you should allow all games to be played fast as possible.. Tournaments take about 5 x as long when you don't let people advance to play the nxt round until everyone is on the same round.
|
yea so i sit in channel msging the main admin 3 hours and during this time he managed to never tell me about the new brackets and DQ me
somebody joked off 1k, nice tournament lmao
|
Hi guys,
I appreciate the feedback. From 1 minute after start time, we were receiving 50+ pms saying "my opponent isn't here".. It was a failure on our part to try to play a game within a time difference.
We then had to create new brackets after a 320 man no show. Turning it into a 64 man tournament.
We do apologise for the time zone confusion. At the same time, AFKing in chat doesn't help much either.
All being said, managing the tournament has been a nightmare, the problem really with the original brackets was that the gap between the games being played was so huge that there was going to be someone in semi finals without playing a game.
We have decided now that future tournaments will either be invite only based on 1) reptuation and 2) global ranking, or very small public tournaments.
It is easy to criticise, but in the end of the day, 1 happy gamer does leave with 1k in their pocket.
There are still some pretty good games in the tournament, with azz lzgamer, moonglade, edge, deth... capoch..
In the end, we learned alot from this, and will change the way things are done in the future.
|
its messed up because of the date, why didnt you just put that it started at 5pm PST 8pm EST or whatever, that is ridiculous, it is a NORTH AMERICAN tournament and it starts on "November 27 1 GMT" if anyone just skims over it it starts on saturday afternoon lol
|
It was an open tournament. And was hosted in Sydney. The bias was the problem and we will sort this out for our next event.
Also we were unable ot launch a website of ours for our own bracket/reporting system. Probably should have waited until we have that set up before hosting a tournament.
As I said before, it was a painful experience and lessons were learned.
You have no idea how many time I have facepalmed myself.

How is that a ridiculous complaint when all he asks for is US times (considering 1 - it's on the US server, 2 - the date on GMT was one day ahead of US, so americans thought 27th/28th but in reality it's 26th/27th in the US since it's 1 AM GMT. Would have helped to put US times in the tourney info - and it definitely wouldn't have hurt. (And if it's Australian hosted why not put aussie times up there too)
|
wow really lame it says this in the main post:
"Date 27th and 28th of November 2010" and then right under it has PST times... keep all the times/dates for ONE time zone, don't randomly mix up times and dates for two time zones.
So I didn't log on today, I thought the games were gonna be played tomorrow considering I played my prelim early, where it says as long as you play prelim before the 27th you're good (which is TOMORROW once again). My first opponent thought it was on saturday as well. Really annoying as I practiced for this.
The prize pool is very nice, but I hope to see a more organized tournament with a check-in feature in the future, signing up for a tourney weeks before it starts means a lot of no shows, even without contradictory scheduling times/zones.
EDIT: I noticed the bracket still doesnt show LzGamer as taking the default win against me, does that mean I can still play my match?
|
I don't want to defend the organisation too much as there are obvious improvements for next time and I don't think you knew what you were getting in to but I think players really need to pay attention to details and take the time to read the threads that hosts put in to the tournament. I also think this benefits e-Sports as a whole because why would a sponsor think their name is going to get out there when participants don't even pay enough attention to figure out the correct time?
However, I don't think invitationals are the right move. Just because it's hard you shouldn't give up and do something easier, halving your exposure for no good reason! Admins are volunteer so it costs you nothing to pick up some help to run the brackets and answer enquiries. Invitationals have some appeal if you get big names but with the prizepools you guys are considering I really emplore you to keep it open.
|
Me and several of my friends were scratched because of the time confusion.
|
mmmmmm nice to see I pulled a Tyler and left after the first game in a bo3, oh well.
regardless the tourny was so piss-poorly run that I really wish I had skipped it.
I played 1 game over the span of 4 hours, and it took admins almost 2 hours to update the brackets, then another hour to get it to a playable state.

Dear Gamers,
After a bad mixup with the timings, and alot of disappointed gamers.
Regards,

I also think this benefits e-Sports as a whole because why would a sponsor think their name is going to get out there when participants don't even pay enough attention to figure out the correct time?
However, I don't think invitationals are the right move. Just because it's hard you shouldn't give up and do something easier, halving your exposure for no good reason! Admins are volunteer so it costs you nothing to pick up some help to run the brackets and answer enquiries. Invitationals have some appeal if you get big names but with the prizepools you guys are considering I really emplore you to keep it open.
The issue with volunteers is, as we found yesterday. They do not show up, or would rather play. We will work something out.

oh I thought day one was today at 5pm PST.

My suggestions from experience with various parts of playing in running, assisting in admining and also talking with other tournament organizers in SEA are:
1) Get as much automation as you can. You can do everything fine with challonge and what not but unless you have a good admin team and really communicate actively with the players it will be difficult to keep things running. 2) Have your own site. Much better to have a solid base of operation for players to find information and work out what is going on.
1 and 2 you sound like you are tending to so that is a good sign.
3) Minimize the amount of time between signing up and round 1 games. The longer you leave between the commencement of the tournament and the sign up faze the more you increase no shows. Reminder systems such as emails and PMs help to lower this effect. A check in system if you have your own site may also help so that players have to check into be placed in brackets. This will lower the number of walk overs and bracket generation isn't hard to do on short notice.
4) Make dates and times blindingly obvious. The short for this one is people are both lazy and stupid (If you are someone who messed up the dates yes I am insulting you and you deserve it). Never the less you still want them to show up even if they should be able to work it out so make it as easy as possible for them.
5) Formatting of announcement post and information sections. All information about the competition should be blindingly easy to find in a short time. Meaningful headings and sub-sections are important. If you hunt down some of the tournament threads made by del you will get a great feel for how to layout information. (Example: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=165971)
I did not participate in this tournament as I was unable to so I can speak directly on how it was run but I think you did what you could with a difficult situation. You had the right intentions but fell short on the implementation from the feedback I am seeing here. I hope this doesn't discourage you from hosting more in the future. I would implore you to continue with open events instead of moving to invites but try to implement some mechanics to aid in lowering the number of players not attending but at the very least minimizing the impact of them not turning up. I hope the information here will help you in some way to make the FXOpen2 a great success :D

What is going on with this tournament?
The bracket is finalized up to the finals but the stream is showing a match in the quarter finals?
|
The matches were played earlier than the stream for a specific reason. Unfortunately it was a failure by myself for not taking brackets down in time for you to spam the results in the chat.
Only the players know the end result. As the final was never updated.

.... why didn't you guys just use the TL.net [time] or [date] code

I don't recall spamming the results of anything? I'm sorry if I did but it was pretty unclear as to what was going on.

we actually did, but for some reason most people still saw the wrong date we also had it up in the TL calander aswell, next tournament we will state it in multiple timezones so there is no confusion

Also, the time the tournament was supposed to start at was different between the thread's and the upcoming event's date/time. Off by an hour.

The event is over. We will run more events in the future. I am sorry that alot of people missed out on this one. It was a mistake.
In the future that mistake will not happen.
There is no point arguing now about it. It happened, things have been and gone. Next time there will be more satisfied people.

Alright, props for holding the event anyways

Are there any replays to be released? And when is the creative contest going to be judged?
|
Good luck with future tournaments. You'll get it figured out I'm sure.
I would recommend trying again before you jump right to invite only. Maybe if you keep the limit at 128 as originally intended, you can work out the kinks for bigger tournaments in the future.

gj capoch for winning! At least I lost to the eventual winner in round 1 lol

slained, we felt that the replays submitted did not fit the title of creative. However, if we had to pick one it would have gone to optikzero. So we stacked him up.
