Google Docs spreadsheet containing rankings

All results are up to date as of Monday, Nov 01 1:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00)

GSL Rules:

+ Show Spoiler +
- After all three tournaments (in 2010), the top 32 will become "Code S" players.
- 33rd-96th will become "Code A" players.
- Code S players and Code A players earn the right to participate in the GSL 2011.
- If a Code S player drops out before GSL 2011 starts, the top Code A player will fill the spot etc.
- Players that are ranked 1st through 32nd will be set as Code S and players that are ranked 33rd through 96th will be set as code A. After a league, the lower ranks of Code S players and the upper ranks of Code A players will play a match to decide their position for the next league. Also, the bottom 32 Come A players will have to play against top 32 Battle.net players to decide the Code A players for the next season.

There will be 12 tournaments throughout 2011, and there will be 4 types of tournaments.

1. GSL (Ran in January, March, April, July and September) - Main League. 32 Code S players tournament and 64 Code A players tournament.
2. World Championship (Ran in June and October) - 4 representative from each region in a 16 man tournament.
3. Ladder Tournament (Ran in February, May, August and November) - Tournament to decide best of Battle.Net ladder. Top 200 from each region are invited to participate in a preliminary for a 16 man double elimination tournament.
4. Blizzard Cup (Ran in December) - Top 8 (of GSL ranking I'm guessing?) will be invited to decide the best player of the year in a Bo5 Playoff format tournament.

A couple of notes:
  • According to GOM's broadcast on 10/28/2010 players making the quarterfinals of each preseason will automatically become "Code-S" qualified players. That leaves at minimum 8 slots as wild card slots based on rankings.
  • As far as I know there has been no information on how ties will be broken in rankings, therefore I ranked players based on qualifying for multiple tournaments. i.e. A player that qualified for Season One and Season Two and got knocked out in the Ro64 each time will be ranked above a player that qualified only for Season Two and got knocked out in the Ro32. Honestly, I'm not real happy with this system but I haven't slept in a while. I will probably go to series won, then games won. Or hopefully someone will enlighten us.
  • I awarded points based on finish. Ro64 = 1 pt, Ro32 = 2 pts., etc.
  • All names are taken from Liquidpedia and I may have some wrong, please correct me if so. I'm happy to make changes.
  • Rankings will be updated a soon as I can following each day's games.
  • If I can figure out how to format it to put it on the board I will, but for now Google Docs will have to do.
  • Yes, the formatting of the spreadsheet isn't spectacular, but for now it's what I've done. I may try to make it prettier over time, but seeing as this will only be good until the end of Season Three it may not be worth a lot of effort.
  • Please feel free to offer any feedback and I'll see what I can do.

Not to mention what will surely be repeats for those in the top 8 of the three tournaments (HopeTorture won't need 2 spots in the S class).

Seems like Blizz takes a fair share out of this whole system.

Good point, added "at minimum". There's already been one repeat.

I don't think anyone has ever posted exactly how ties will be broken, but I don't think it's quite like how you have it. Since they're already taking top 8, that means that one top 8 finish is superior to three top 16 finishes. So I think it makes more sense if each round is superior to 3 finishes in the next earlier round. So if you were to convert it to a point system, each round would have to be 3 times + 1 point more than the previous round. So I think it would go something like this:

Round of 64 = 1 Point
Round of 32 = (3x1)+1 = 4 Points
Round of 16 = (3x4)+1 = 13 Points

This fits the formula of top 8 being automatically qualified.

Also note that according to this system anyone who made top 32 in at least one GSL is in A-Class. There will be 96 qualifiers (32 in S and 64 in A). Top 32 from 3 GSL's is 96 players if they're no duplicates. But there will be a lot of duplicates, so there will be some A-class players who don't even win a round in the GSL.

There's something a bit off about this. You have HopeTorture in the lead with 10 points and FruitDealer with 9. However, according to GOMtv's GSL ranking system, both are first lieutenants. HopeTorture entered the tournament as a platoon sergeant, then got promoted to master sergeant (ro32) and second lieutenant (ro16).

Therefore, it's safe to assume that the champion, according to GOMtv, gets two promotions over the runner-up.

Why not just have the spreadsheet list everyone's army ranks? That way you'd be able to figure out the wild cards pretty easy. It's still unknown how exactly GOMtv calculates ranks (Inca entered as a sergeant but Maka entered as a staff sergeant, even though both were GSL1 quarterfinalists)

FruitDealer made ro32 too.

I wonder what IdrA will need to do to make S-class. Obv. ro8 is an automatic qualification, but given that he's already made ro32 and ro16, I wouldn't be surprised if another appearance in the ro16 was enough to qualify him.

FruitDealer entered as a second lieutenant, then won his ro64 match, promoting him to first lieutenant.

HopeTorture, on the other hand, has needed three match wins (instead of the logical 2) in order to be promoted to first lieutenant. Therefore, +1 per round as the spreadsheet suggests isn't correct.

Here's what has been shown as player ranks in GSL2. They're in line with what is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_military_ranks

When HopeTorture won his ro32, he got double promoted from master sergeant to second lieutenant. When Ensnare won his ro32, he only got promoted to command sergeant major. They both defeated privates 2-0, but HopeTorture does have more overall wins due to GSL1. The ranking system isn't just +1 rank per match win. It's quite a mystery, so you should just list what GOMtv lists since their rankings are official.

By the way, there are 9 more military ranks above first lieutenant. If HopeTorture can become GSL2 champion (3 more match wins) AND GSL3 champion (6 match wins), he would be a 5-star general!

Thanks for the feedback guys, as we haven't had any real "rankings" posted by (at least that I've seen) I am flying in the dark and going on how rankings tend to be done in other events. Essentially, at this point I'm awarding 1 point for each series win a winner gets, plus one for qualifying for the Ro64. That point is on the assumption is that players that qualify will be given A status over those that do not.

I could do it by numbers of players beaten, but unless I'm doing my math wrong the ratio's should be the same since the places aren't broken down below first and second. So all Semi-Finalists were tied for third, all Quarter finalists tied for fifth, etc.

As to the Military Ranks given at the moment it seems kind or arbitrary, but if it's based on number of wins then the 1 point system should work. Granted, HopeTorture did enter today as a Second Lt. Making andra20's assumption correct.

I'll make the changes cablesc suggested on my private copy and see how it looks, he may be right.

I mainly made this to see how things would play out going into Season 3. Where do certain players need to finish to qualify for S status? Again, this is all conjecture until we see something official from GOM on how rankings are calculated.

Does someone know of a place on the GOM site showing what military rank each player is? Or even player profile pages showing what rank they are?

Thanks for the feedback guys!

The thing is, even Artosis and Tasteless were clueless as to the whole military rank thing when they first started showing them. The whole system of military ranks has seemed pretty arbitrary to this point.

Arbitrary, yes, but we have to assume that this is how they'll rank all the players. I'm sure there's some logical method to it.

If Recruit is 1, then First Lieutenant is 11. So to make things simple, FruitDealer and HopeTorture should both have 11 points. As for finding out everyone's ranks, just look at the first few minutes of each VOD on gomtv.net.

After every GSL there will be a qualifying round to promote/demote players for the next GSL. The bottom S-code players will play the top A-code players for a spot in the S-league. The bottom A-code players will play the top 32 from battlenet for a place in the next A-league.

Actually I'd say Idra has a chance of getting code S even if he doesn't qualify for GSL3. So far 28 players have gotten to ro16 or better, Idra also has an ro32 so he's not at the bottom of those 28 and there will be plenty of duplicates in ro16 of GSL3. If he qualifies for ro64 he should be pretty much guaranteed code S.

In the spreadsheet, ITR (argh, fine, HopeTorture) has 10 points from GSL1, Why?

Didn't Fruitdealer win that?

It's from this interview with the Gretech e-sports director:

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=142000

Players that are ranked 1st through 32nd will be set as Code S and players that are ranked 33rd through 96th will be set as code A. After a league, the lower ranks of Code S players and the upper ranks of Code A players will play a match to decide their position for the next league. Also, the bottom 32 Come A players will have to play against top 32 Battle.net players to decide the Code A players for the next season.

A lot of info in that interview about how Gretech is going to operate the GSL's.

Updated to reflect the results of Ro16 Day 2.

At the moment leaving it at one point per win. I do have a post up on the GOM forums asking how many points a player gets based on finish. We'll see if they answer.

Most likely they will try to tie it in with the new leages Blizzard has announced.

So it's similar to the Blizzcon qualifiers. Except this time the top32 of Bnet. They'll probably separate the ladder into regions first and then lets say the top32 of EU/NA/SA/RU? or somethign similar will then play eachother and then the top32 of all regions combined will play vs the bottom 32 of the A league.

Am I right into assuming it looks kinda like this?

After all three tournaments (in 2010), the top 32 will become "Code S" players.
- 33rd-96th will become "Code A" players.
- Code S players and Code A players earn the right to participate in the GSL 2011.
- If a Code S player drops out before GSL 2011 starts, the top Code A player will fill the spot etc.

My suspicion is that it will be top 32 on the Korean Ladder as far as the GSL itself goes. The other tournaments are more international.

Games = Wins - Losses/10

Green Squares have qualified by making Ro8.
And yes - I have 33 people qualified in Top32 - sure that'll change moving into GSL S3

Jaycee,

Very, thanks. I'll get that added in in the next couple days. I wish they'd just tell us how they're tiebreaking.

damousseh,

Will do, just make sure to check it after I do. I'm sure I'll manage to mess that up.

It's more likely they'll just use the Korean ladder, there's no point qualifying players from EU/NA for a tournament in Korea that many of them won't be able to participate even if they qualify.

Are the points in your spreadsheet supposed to relate to number of promotions earned? If so, Ro64 shouldn't be worth 1 pt as you don't gain a promotion for making it to the Ro64. For example, Fruitdealer gained only one promotion in GSL 2 after winning his Ro64 match, but you gave him 2 pts.

Why does NesTea only have 5 points from his recent victory? Shouldnt it be 8 following how you rewarded FruitDealer.

So it's similar to the Blizzcon qualifiers. Except this time the top32 of Bnet. Am I right into assuming it looks kinda like this?

It's more likely they'll just use the Korean ladder, there's no point qualifying players from EU/NA for a tournament in Korea that many of them won't be able to participate even if they qualify.

There's no inconvenience from most people not going. However it's important that the few top EU/NA players who will go can qualify.

NesTea seems ranked a bit low. He got just 5 pts for season 2 and fruitdealer got 8 for season 1, yet both won in those seasons. I dont get it

So i guess the liquid horsemen will most likely need to hit the RO32 to grab A-class...

I hope so, but I have a bad feeling they'll just use the Korean ladder and foreigners will have to arrive in Korea and rank themselves up to have a chance to qualify.

This explains it all. http://www.gomtv.net/news/256/0
In SC1, ZvZ was Rock-Paper-Scissors... unless JaeDong was playing, then it was Rock-Paper-Scissors-JD, and JD beats all of them.

Thanks hadn't seen that.

What is surprising is that all people from GSL 1 got a 'free' rank, since they started one level higher than those who first qualify in GSL 2/3. That makes things slightly harder for the foreigner newcomers.

I'm not so sure the military rankings was such a good idea.

It most likely hasn't been updated to account for the Finals + Semifinals yet.

It would be amazing if they can make it back to the round of 8.

I put together the list below (in spoiler tag) based on the Rank System Info posted by gomtv.net.

Rules:
1. You don't rank up for qualifiying.
2. Season 1 started at 1 higher rank than Season 2 (Private vs Recruit) so
Season 1 players have an advantage.
3. You rank up 1 point for wins, 2 points for a finals win.
4. Top 8 from GSL 1, 2, 3 automatically qualify for S-Class.

Assumptions Made:
1. Season 3 starters will start as recruits (like Season 2)
2. Players will be chosen for the last 9-17 (depending on repeat
top 8 finishers) S-Class spots and all A-Class spots by rank.

We don't know tie-breaker rules.

So, below:
Players in Blue are qualified for S-Class.
Players in Green are qualified for A-Class.
Bolded Players are still in GSL 3 (names taken from the qualifier post in the tourney forum).
Players with same rank are sorted by:
1. Series wins.
2. Alphabetically.
Players with same rank and no series wins are sorted by:
1. Games won.
2. Alphabetically.
The numbers in parentheses are the ranks up from matches won, including the extra rank up from winning the finals. The "+1" is players who qualified for GSL1 and thus have 1 rank up (starting at Private rather than Recruit) compared to other players.

Note:
Idra, ogsTheWind, and sanZenith are not qualified for S-Class because they can be
forced into a tie-breaker if an extremely unlikely but possible situation happens
(top 8 are all new, 6 of 7 Corporal/Private First Class without S-Class already
make it to Ro16 and then lose). For practical purposes you can consider them
S-Class.

Unfortunately I can't get a fixed-with font going without using the "code" tag
([font] and   don't work), which wipes out formatting. Anyone have any ideas?
Would you prefer me to get the columns to line up nicely rather than using color/bold formatting?
Also, I didn't alphabetically sort the Ro64 qualifiers that the Tourney Forum
post didn't translate.
