I really love this TvT, just because I can see how much this match-up can evolve in the coming months/years sheer amount of stuff that can be down at once with the mobility and immobility is insane.

No, scouting the stargate isn't reasonable at all. Although sending a zergling around the map to constantly scout locations is always a good thing if you have the APM for it.

What I mean is that if he sent in a two pronged overlord scout or an overseer then he would have seen that Lotze was on 1 base with only a gateway and a robo. Seeing only those two unit producing structures would have tipped him off that something was up.
