well, idra and TLO said that their groups were incredibly easy (artosis' vlog) and since anyone could sign up it is not surprising that it's quite random who you face and that you could face some noob or someone like Ensnare or Tester. But yeah thats not what his question meant in the first place ^^
TLO is the only one from Liquid who advanced .. Actually surprised Artosis advanced, thought he was long gone, but looks like he's been practicing a lot. Now that Jinro and Nazgul are gone... Looks like we're stuck cheering for TLO! Hwaiting!

I guess we just have to cheer for those who did go
i think the really short notice was a major part for the foreigner teams, + having to spend alot of time in Korea all the sudden isn't just something everyone can do
but i agree i hope ALOT more will try out next time, i mean, who don't wanna win 85.000$, fame and glory?

Sorry. I mean with being a commentator / employee.
Oh, I thought the other meaning too. lol. Somewhat new to this but after watching his replays from IEM I assumed Artosis just got invited to play because he was American and "known" in SC scene or friends with day[9] maybe. (Sorry not trying to be mean and I am only a gold level player so infinite grains of salt!)
This turned out so well arranged, as if it was an invitational. I'm only missing a couple more foreigners, who I think deserved to be in, and would have coped well with it. But with the exception of that mishap, there is a fine mix of BW veterans, WC3 players, new players, clan representation. Almost perfect diversity for a great tourney. Props to Blizzard for making a game which is able to provide common ground for such a wide variety of gamers.
I'm sure after these round of prelims a lot of top foreigners are scratching their heads about the next gsl. Hopefully the success of torch, idra, artosis, and tlo will inspire some eg, root, mouz, mym (.etc) guys to go out and compete.
The success of the GSL might as well attract more current BW pros to transit to sc2 so the competition might become even harder for the current top pros. Therefore now was probably the best time to easily qualify into ro64 compared to what the GSL succes might bring next time.

not to worry, there are 2 more of these cups this year I believe. Im not sure if you can keep playing if you qualified for the round of 64, but i believe if you didnt you can still enter the next 2 events to qualify for the big league next year.
I really don't think that the Koreans will be as monstrous in SC2 as they were in BW. There were very few foreigners taking part in the qualifiers for this tourney compared to tons of Koreans, so just the fact that we have TLO, Idra, Artosis, and Torch says to me that the Koreans aren't as far ahead of the rest of the world as they think they are.
It's the 'final 32', but TLO, Idra, Artosis, and Torch aren't listed there, even though they aren't listed under 'Foreigners who failed to qualify', so I assume that they're still there?

That's the final 32 out of 64. All the foreigners that qualified were in the first 32.

final 32 as in the 32 from day 2, excluding the 32 from day 1
at the end of the article it says 64
it is very hard to tell from how the article is written

haha, exactly the same thing I was thinking. in the vod Idra seemed to know that he was playing ensnare in the Ro32. so idk if they're online or not.
The link to the brackets in the day1/day2 threads stopped at the round of four for each group, so it's quite likely that they'll just keep following those brackets for the group stages.
It's strange that they pimped 100 foreign players going when it seems the number is actually 11 = IdrA, Artosis, Nazgul, TLO, Jinro, TorcH, Smuft, GiYoM + 3 relative unknowns. That's quite a discrepancy

First off, you don't have to be white to be a foreigner~ Also Im sure there were some korean-americans, kossies and Kanadians in the tournament, prob visiting korea.

You can't. There were at least a couple thousand games (probably closer to 4000) played for this qualifier tournament. So . . . it'd be a lot of replays if they release them, which I really doubt they will.
Not a single mainstream (read: good, active) BW player. Not that I'm very surprised (afterall they're all under contracts).
Still until/if those guys make the jump to SC2 I'll think we'll never hear the end of "If only players X, Y and Z played everyone would get raped".
Still funny though that some of the favourites in this tournament are old B-teamers that never really made it in BW now they might walk away with a price as large as winning about 8 OSL ^^

Okay that was a bit over the top =)
But it's about 2.5x as much money which is still quite much. But then again I'd say OSL/MSL are the only two e-sports tournaments that aren't definined by the prize pool.
GSL has prestige because the winner gets an absurd amount of money. OSL has prestige cause its the goddamn OSL.
On a different note I do like open formats and all (especially now that player strength is quite hard to actually measure) but it feels they somehow could have organized the format as to not be as random as it seems to be (although I dont have any good ideas on how to do that).
Not really good for the either the players or the viewers if subpar players get into the RO64 while some good players got knocked out in the qualifier cause they had the misfortune of getting paired in a group with another good player.
GSL-whoevers can talk all he want about open philosophy but eventually there will be some sort of system where there number of truly open spots are limited.

That will be coming next with their classification system but you have to start somewhere. As for active bw pro you'll never see any as long as they're contracted by kespa.

Well still pretty sure a statistician for example could figure out a good way to make it as good as possible (might require to many games to be practical though).
And for the contract part I don't really know how the contracts are made between progamer-team-KeSPA and so on.
Still I'm surprised no teams felt they could spare 1-2 hopeless B-teamers to practice SC2 afterall its good publicity for them if they do good although I suspect it has alot to do with the whole Blizzard-KeSPA fight.
But then again CJ let Idra play SC2 on practice hours in beta so.
I'm sorry that I haven't been very active, but we are really busy down here at GomTV. We have just finnished making brackets for RO64. I know many of you are very curious about it, but all I can say is that it will be confidential for now.
As for the opening match, I mentioned before that there will be 16 players playing. It seems I was misinformed. There will be 4 selected players from RO64, which means there will be 2 matches(3 games per match, the best two wins).
Well I guess another big question everyone has is "How the hell do we watch the games?!" We will upload them on http://www.gomtv.net. It is NOT in Korean and you do NOT need to pay.
"What about commentaries?! Do we have to watch it listening to Korean jibberish?" Not to worry. Dan(Artosis) and Nick(Tasteless) are going to provide English commentaries.
If by any chance some of you already live in Korea or are planning to come to Korea this week. The opening match will be held at KBS 88 Stadium at 7pm KST on 4th of September. It's free and all the players that participated in the preliminaries will be given VIP seats and presents.
For further information do not hesitate to email me : junkka@gretech.com

I don't think it matters too much for the most of the people here if the interviews are on video or just transcribed, just as long as it's available in English. During the offline qualifiers, people were even translating the Korean interviews and posting them here. They were quite interesting and insightful, so definitely do try to get some on the English gomtv website if possible.

They boasted 100 foreign players who signed up, but most of them probably did not actually go. Visa issues, travel money, etc. There were many walk-overs in the first round.
Thanks for keeping us informed on what's going on, it's great to have this level of communication between Gom and the english community.
I'm curious if there are any plans to help foreigners come over to play in future qualifiers, such as travel and hotel arrangements as well as future accommodations if they manage to qualify and have to stay longer or even permanently. There are lots of really great foreign SC2 players and I'm sure for many it's kind of intimidating to be coming over to play without knowing a whole lot of details.
I really want TLO get really far. I'm sad that more of the Liquid guys didn't make it, but TLO has what it takes to possibly win this thing. I hope he does.
TorcH came out of left field. He seems fairly competent and skillful, but from what I saw on Artosis' videos, I wouldn't be too surprise if he gets knocked out early. There are some really strong players coming up, and I'm not sure if he has what it takes to make it all the way. I hope he does well though!
I guess respect is due to Idra as well, even though he's not my favorite. I'm sure he'll do well.
Isn't Artosis casting? How is he gonna play while he casts? Oh well, I have lots of respect for him as well. I hope you do well Artosis! ( give us more videos XD )

Tournament field looks really good, hope IdrA does really well in this, I think he'll have a leg up on a lot of the Korean field actually - he's been playing near full-time since beta and he's already got live experience in a tourney, which a lot of these kids might not have, especially some of the ex-BW pros who never really were able to hack it as A-teamers.

GOMtv has already covered SC2 matches....so yeah, you're behind.
I remember NaDa was 13 when he exploded onto the BW pro scene. Not unheard of, but if this kid has the ability to become the next NaDa, that would certainly be impressive.

Apparently Holcan is the only other person who knows who Maka is, so I figured I would clarify a few things...
Maka (aka townhall from Wc3 days, Clan Liz and former member of ieS) is a former semi-pro Wc3 player who placed top 2 in a few competitions such as the Fnatic PLAY Wc3 tournament, GosuGamers SteelSeries cup and some ZOTACs as well.
Maka also uses the alias of 'Yotsuba' now.
He was a Night Elf player who's Battle.net clan was Clan Liz and was very good but did not take the game seriously towards the latter part of 2009. He waited for SC2.
Other info non-gaming related about Maka---
He has Hypotonia (a muscle disorder) and a few other maladies that I will not go into detail about as he is a close personal friend.
So he was not a pro Wc3 player, but semi-pro, but still very talented as you can imagine ^^ His AoW rushes were particularly exciting to watch : P

BW wasn't out when Nada was 13.
Correct. Nada was born in 1984.
Ah, right you are. Who was I thinking of, then? I seem to remember NaDa joining the televised game scene very young, but TLPD shows his first game wasn't until 2002 when he was 17 =[

Does anyone else here feel like watching a Korean commentated SC2 Match? or is it jut me? :D
I just want to hear Koreans go FUNGALLLLLUUUUU. It's just not the same though. I'm watching the Korean stream. I don't really know too much about tasteless and artosis though.
I think "Maru", the thirteen year-old, was like an SK Telecom "elementary school master" or something bizarre like that. He's an elite Starcraft player, as 13-year-old Starcraft players go.
