"The basic goal of kata is to preserve and transmit proven techniques. By practicing in a repetitive manner the learner develops the ability to execute those techniques and movements in a natural, reflex-like manner. Systematic practice does not mean permanently rigid. The goal is to internalize the movements and techniques of a kata so they can be executed and adapted under different circumstances, without thought or hesitation. A novice’s actions will look uneven and difficult, while a master’s appear simple and smooth"

I am not a good Starcraft player, My current rank is platinum and it should be as my macro is atrocious. I find myself fumbling keys and missing macro steps, especially when under pressure. I am however, a good martial artist, I've been practicing martial arts for about fifteen years now and I can say with all honesty that I have become quite proficient at it. In a recent lesson I was reviewing the basics of Kata and something struck me. To improve at SC2 I need to have a key kata.

The concept of a kata is to string different techniques in pre-determined sequence in order to practice them repeatedly, eliminating thought from the process and thus allowing an ever growing speed and reflex to develop, To the degree where the techniques become automatic. This principle should apply to keyboard presses in the exact same way as it does to punches and kicks. So I wrote down a few Katas ( I'm using the core hotkey set ), I've been practicing in game and out of game for only a few days and I'm seeing a massive improvement in my play. After two days I felt more improvement in my macro then I have in the last few months.

P.S.
To be clear, What I'm doing is mechincally repeating these commands - either in a practice game against the AI or in a notepad at work when I got some spare time. Just repeating the sequance over and over. I haven't timed myself when I began but after just a couple of days the diffrence in speed for the enitre sequance is major.

This is an example of "The Macro Cycle" a concept huge in Korea but which seems to get dumbed down to "Probes and Pylons" over here. what you're suggesting is a good idea and people should look much more deeply into it. An extensive guide on the Macro Cycle is definitely needed on TL.

Yeah, the example I gave was of a macro cycle but the idea behind it isn't about the macro, it's much more basic then that.
The idea is to implement a training techinque that will improve your key strokes with no relation to what they do, to practice a sequance of strokes over and over until it's completely automatic. Greatly increasing the mechincal skill of the player in the minimum amount of time. To implement this on macro cycle would be the most sensiable approach but you can also make a 'build all the buildings' kata or 'tech research' kata. Or you can mix it up any way you want.

The important thing is to have a pre-determined sequance you can repeat again and again ( in game and out of game ) till it becomes so automatic you can do without thinking about the sequance. Just like a martial art kata. Sadly I havent' had a lot of play time lately due to familiy issues but every time I practice this Macro kata I come away with a marked improvment that I haven't seen in previous months.

I really thinks there is something here worth exploring.

Let me recommend this test to you guys. Time yourself on doing the macro kata, then practice it for a few days in a notepad or against the AI. Do nothing but repeating the Kata over and over, then measure the new time, I think we'll see some amazing results.

As a right handed player, playing on the right handed side of the keyboard feels very awkward, esp when i try to hold down Ctrl and Shift
But sharing hotkey ideas is always great, and opens the minds of many on the forum, kudos

Thanks Monsyphon but it's not about the hotkeys, I'm using 'the Core' by JakJak you can find out all about here:

It's a practice technique I wouild love to discuss. Having a preset key sequance you practice and use to refine your mechanical play. I think there is really something there. I wish I could think of a way I could measure it aside from just the overall feeling of confidence.

I guess I can measure speed and key precision....I think I'll write a flash program that tests you on the kata and tells you how precise and fast you are. I'll do that now!

I like this concept. It's a quantifiable method of improving your core mechanical skill on the keyboard with relation to the game's specific keys, and I think that's something - at least insofar as I've seen on TL / B.Net - is too oft overlooked. Probably because finding a method is difficult.

Would you perhaps develop one of these "kata"s for Terran or Protoss? That would be much appreciated.

Thanks Killcycle.

I'm not good enough with Terran and protoss to sugget a good Kata for them.

I would love it if some one suggested one, It needs to be reltively short and preferabbly encompass the stadnard macro cycle for the race. So for terran it would be something like:
make scv's
drop mules
make units from barraks
make untis from factory
make units from starport
send scv to make depots and queeue it back.

I think you should add eye movement into it. Like alweys watch minimap after every step or watch suply when makeing units/overlords.

Edit. Like day9 says good macro is not in the hands its in the eyes.
I apologize for possible grammar errors.
