In my division (50-something) some of the fellows there have 22 APM. It's kind of scary, but I guess some people don't have to be that active to play. I still haven't finished my placement matches for 1v1, but 2v2 is plat.
Still, hopefully they'll be a big difference as SC2 evolves. :X

i think everybody should start at copper, placement matches are pretty much a coin toss, if you are lucky, you will play 5 matches with awful players while other may play with decent players. making the lucky guy a platinum player and the unlucky one a silver/gold player

I lost a placement match once and was placed into platinum still.
I don't know if other factors are tied into it but it seems like they are.
Platinum is a bit too easy to get into though...

i went 4-1 in 1v1 and got placed in plat, i went 4-1 in 2v2 and got placed in silver lol.

I think it's not only win/lose factor which determines if you move up a league. I've lost a game in 2v2 but had the best score by far and suddenly moved up.
Anyway what does leagues matter? Nothing! I always meet opponents that are favored to win and they're not even in my own league. I thought the point with divisions was to meet players in the same division, but I never do that.

I didn't expect "only" 40% of this pages community to be platinum, although it's clearly above overall average.

I think it's not necessarily a sign of bad skill right now. With a good overview in the game and good tactical decisionmaking a good player should easily be able to get platinum with around 60 average.
(I have 100, used to have 220 in WC3, and still im partially spaming apm by giving multiple commands)
Even harassing plus macroing up simultationusly doesn't take much apm anymore (speaking as a terran who likes many forms of harassing)
Plus, he is protoss. No further commentation from this terran player here

Went 5-0 in my placement matches and got into platinum, it was very easy... I am being owned badly now ;(

I think it'll be even easier to get into the higher leagues immediately after SC2 comes out. Think of all the new people playing the game - all those WoW kids committing to another Blizzard game.

Plat 1v1 because I won all 5 of my placements. I really don't want to be in platinum anymore cause I'm definitely not in the right tier.

There's no people playing right now? lol... 25 000 is a huge amount of players and that's just in Europe I assume.

Alright so I have 2 accounts and for the hell of it decided to try to get into gold instead of platinum, like on my other account. I just got done with my placement matches, and got placed into Gold division 212. Two hundred and twelve. That is a lot of players just in gold; 21,200 if there are really 212 gold divisions. Currently the division only has around 20 people or so. But it is filling up. 1 person gets added to the roster every 20 seconds or so.

Its too easy to get in platinium, I just got my beta key and played my 5 placements games and got placed in platinium (5 - 0). And I didnt played bw.

Hm somehow i feel bad losing one placement game and playing gold after these comments. I guess over 5 years of dota dont help your rts skill.
