People are awfully reluctant to admit that derogatory uses of "gay" are hurtful even if they're not intended that way. But there is a reason that using words like "jew" and "black" (let alone independently offensive terms like "jap" or "chink" or "nigger"...) in a general, derogatory way would be frowned upon. Take any use of "gay" and replace it with one of those terms; it sounds terrible.

Intent isn't everything. Common usage isn't everything. It definitely is not merely a matter of political correctness. There was a time when derogatory uses of all of those terms was more acceptable than it is today. That doesn't mean it was any less hurtful then than it would be now.

(Similarly, there was a time when people with slanty eyes that speak bad English were comic relief in movies all on their own. Hell, there was a time when people in blackface were comic relief. It is the same problem: something very likely unintentionally hurtful being accepted but clearly not ideal.)

Other words this applies to: "retard," "girl," "woman." (As in "quit being such a girl.")

This letter is not quite on the same point, but is in the neighborhood (and is succinct and nicely answers some common replies).

(Perhaps there is such a thing as taking this line of reasoning too far? In any event, we have certainly not taken it far enough yet.)

People have to get over this whole thing. It was an excellent write-up of some absolutely hilarious games, and that is all. Political correctness isn't exactly the internet community's strong point, nor is sincere concern for other people's feelings, and we all know this. Something offends you? Ignore it. He didn't mean to offend any homosexuals, any people from any other races, nothing. :QQ:

Loved the write-up, Plex, a shame it created such an uproar for all the wrong reasons.
