[GOM] 32 comes to an end
November 30th, 2008 00:43 GMT
The last week of the GOM Ro32 is this week, and as has become a trend in the tournament so far, they've left the best for last. But first, let's take a look at what happened last week:
As promised, the final day in the GSL Ro32 is ending with a bang, and it starts up with what should be an interesting match between KTF rookie HoeJJa and old-timer Much. While Much has the definite edge in this match-up, HoeJJa has shown himself to be a strong player, especially against Protoss. Much, on the other hand, has had a fairly rough time against Zerg players recently, although the barrage of top Zerg players he's faced might benefit him. With that said, his perhaps overly creative builds have let him down in the past, and this is the perfect opportunity for HoeJJa to cause another big upset.
The second game will be between ToSky and Kal. Kal made a name for himself as a PvZ specialist, and he still fields one of the best records of any player against Zerg. In contrast to this, ToSky's ZvP seems to be his worst matchup. ToSky has shown a knack for strong early to midgame play and it will be interesting to see how Kal copes with it. With that said, Kal should make it to the Ro16.
As we near the end, the intensity of the games go up a notch with Midas taking on BackHo. Both players had very good seasons a season or two ago, but then slumped after that. However, they have both been making something of a comeback in this season's GSL. The match-up is good for both Midas and Backho, and they are both KeSPA top 30 going into these games, so it is almost impossible to call. Much of this match will depend on who manages to keep his cool better, and who has the best preparation going into the games.
The closing game is between defending champion Jaedong, and KTF's replacement for Reach, Tempest. Tempest has been trying to make the shift from amateur to progamer for a few months now, with varied results. In general, however, he seems to be holding his own against strong competition. Jaedong is, unfortunately, more than just strong competition, he is at the very top, and this is his match-up. In the last six months, Jaedong has lost only six ZvP's, and he's won twenty of them, including two against Stork, three against Free, three against Best, and four against Much. Tempest will have to come out all guns blazing to stand a chance against the Tyrant.
Susie has made a thread which she will update with all the newest interviews as they occur, so, from now on, I will be linking directly to that thread, instead of each separate interview. From Susie's thread you can find links to the most recent, as well as some of the older interviews, allowing you to make sure that you stay up to date.. The interviews for this week are with: JangBi, Nal_keke, and Rock! You can also ask questions for Jaedong or Backho in Gom's Q&A section.
In just a few hours we will know who is going through to the Ro16 of the GSL. Many of the favourites have fallen already, and there will almost certainly to be more upsets as the competition heats up. Every week is a test of endurance for these players, and it's fabulous seeing who has what it takes to go all the way.

anyhow good write up, lovely interviews

Jaedong lost 1-2 vs han(which btw makes it 8 ZvP losses for JD past 6 months) last OSL prelim, and Tempest won 2-0 against July in the MSL prelim(the one before the recent).
I know those games werent official, but just mentioning it
JD is the favorite, but GO TEMPEST!!!
|
Doesn't look that good for Zergs this GOM season, 1 qualified (from mirror game :D) and most likely we see only jaedong advance today (tempest might pull win here).
If jaedong can survive to 3rd set he will win.

I think the upsets will stop come to a stop in the Ro16. At this point, the stakes area way too high and superior players are going to be thoroughly prepared. I fully expect the last few rounds to be once again be battles among the elites.
The only potential spoiler could be in the upper-left part of the bracket, as Best's PvZ is still incredibly suspect against Effort. Otherwise, I expect the favorites to simply rape.
|
Who I want for Ro8 Skyhigh vs Effort Bisu vs Flash - Unless HoeJJa pulls a miracle and beats both Much and Bisu Stork vs Jangbi Tempest vs Kal - JD would be cool if no Tempest I guess.
|
Imagine a Flash vs. Jaedong final...wow...
|
Jaedong raping is so fun to watch, kick his butt JD!
|
Poor pepe. He first faces "Perfect Toss" Jangbi and even if he somehow manages to win, he will most likely face Stork, an even more terrible PvT monster. Dunno why, but I always had a lot of sympathy for this guy, and this could have been his way to proof he is not just the 1-13 record guy.
And my favorite toss, Much, hasn't got an easy path either. After he beats Hoejja, he faces a firehot Bisu and if he wins, he is facing Flash. Oh yeah, and in the unlikely case he went through all that, BeSt is most likely awaiting in the last step of his bracket.

Flash vs Jaedong in the final - ,.-v

omg how sick would a JD vs Bisu BO5 be?

We all know what happened in the LAST Flash vs Jaedong Final.

I think that's a foolish expectation to have

Based on how he's playing right now, I'd say Jaedong's a long shot to get to the finals over Free, Kal, and then Jangbi/Stork.

Nice writeup, though I don't get the deal with Tempest replacing Reach.

I don't like "pepe's" gaming style at all.
|
Every single round of 16 match in GOM has a protoss in it; two of those matches are also PvP's. I really hope we don't end up with another MSL-type this season where we have nothing but PvP's to look forward to in the last few matches...

|
Im very excited about Tempest. Hopefully he can develop as the much needed protoss on the ktf team.
|
pepe seems to slowly getting better and better, he might be dangerous soon enough.
