Use The Force

Azubu, the enigmatic entity that took the esports world by storm, was sent out with a wimper by one of StarCraft II's traditional giants in LG-IM. None of LG-IM's GSL champions were required for the victory; just their quiet and consistent Terran lieutenant in YoDa. It was the first all-kill of YoDa's GSTL career, and he picked an apt moment to play to his best. Azubu was crushed, YoDa's teammates filled with confidence, and LG-IM's strategies hidden from the vigilent eyes of Axiom-Acer.

Azubu's Zerg heavy line-up revealed what their plan must have been. Their Terran and Protoss players had prepared primarily for their earlier match against Startale, while the Zergs had been focused on this next match against LG-IM. However, it would have been impossible for LG-IM to count on YoDa having such a monster day, and one by one they fell until no one was left.

It was a strong performacne from an always confounding player in YoDa. He seemed distinctly middle-tier before the match, and he didn't look good for more than one or two wins. Instead he pulled off the spectacular five man all-kill. Then, just days later, he went up against effort in Code A and lost in a terrible 0 - 2 series that made one wonder if the GSTL match was just a dream.

Due to the all-kill, LG-IM seem almost forced to use YoDa in their next match against Axiom-Acer. But even LG-IM won't know whether the good or bad YoDa will show up until he steps into the booth.

Where they Stand

Axiom-Acer: The Little Team That Could

'Feel good story' doesn't begin to describe Axiom-Acer in the GSTL. Coming into the tournament, everyone was pegging them as one of the weaker teams in the league. It was clear that even Axiom-Acer's own players were trying to keep their expectations realistic. Without talking up their chances, their attitude was that of 'if we work hard and prepare well, we can make it into the playoffs.' That, they did.

With wins against giants like MVP, LG-IM and Startale, Axiom-Acer finished at second place with a 5 - 2 record. Despite having one of the thinnest rosters of any team, frequent foreign tournament travel to deal with, and Miya retiring halfway through the season, Axiom-Acer pulled a reverse-Prime and got the very most out of their limited resources. Every week, a different player seemed to come through in a big way. MMA brought his 2011 form back against team MVP. Scarlett sniped multiple GSL champion Mvp. Player-coach-driver-cook Crank filled in as an unexpected ace a couiple of weeks. Ryung scored a valuable all-kill against Startale. Yes, you can say they got kind of lucky, but when a team is lucky whenever they need it, there's usually something more behind it.

Axiom-Acer's problem now is that their opponents are just as locked into GSTL as they are. One thing Axiom-Acer players seemed to believe is that they were better prepared and more focused on winning the GSTL than anyone else. That sounds pretty plausible, since a bigger team with more superstar players might have trouble getting their players to go all-in on the regular season. But now that the championship is just a couple of matches away, you can expect everyone to be taking things very seriously. If Axiom-Acer want to keep this Cinderella story going, they have to take their preparation to yet another level.

Good luck, and have fun.

LG-IM: So Overrated They're Underrated

On the other hand we have the only team in the league that is both overrated and underrated at the same time. Ever since its creation, IM has been the premier team in SC2 of raising up champion after champion in their plan to have every player on their roster win at least one major tournament. And while their individual results are nothing to scoff at, it has often come at the expense of their team league results. The coach has even gone on record saying they have sacrificed chances in the team league, often preferring to give their B-teamers as many chances as possible to level up their skill and be able to reach the next stage in their careers. But that was not the case this season as they announced that they were tired of the jokes and would just straight out win going all guns blazing. But despite that bold declaration, their results have been mediocre and have often come down to whether or not their Protoss lineup was able to kill the other team or not.

Mvp and MC are the wild cards for LG-IM, capable of swinging things in their favor if they can bring the veteran savvy that makes them dangerous individual league players still. In a game seven of WCS Grand Final, there's probably no other player you'd trust more than Mvp. Sadly, we can't say he's brought that same ability to GSTL ace matches... yet.

LG-IM are the most successful StarCraft II team in history. Let's see if they can live up to that reputation.

Overall outlook

Usually I would say that Axiom should only worry about the triple threat of First, Yonghwa and Squirtle. But the playoffs have been weird, as players like Genius and YoDa are showing up and reminding us that the all-kill format is incredibly unpredictable. Both sides have players that are capable of getting hot and four or five-killing the other team, and it's hard to take that into account.

Besides that, This should be a battle where Axiom can see if their super-sniping that worked so well in the regular season can see them through a playoff match as well. The difficulty here is that it's now a best of nine instead of a best of seven, and Axiom-Acer's roster will be stretched extremely thin. One failed snipe will severely constrain them. Two failed snipes will basically destroy all their options and force them into autopilot. Taking the first point and forcing LG-IM to be ones reacting will be crucial for Axiom-Acer.

For LG-IM, the gameplan is "don't f*** up." They are the favorites through and through with a much deeper line-up. They should win if they take things seriously and don't underestimate Axiom-Acer like they did last time. But, it's LG-IM, and they might overthink things or find a way to make a weird mistake. Will we see Ruin get sent out randomly and hand his team a loss? Everything is possible in LG-IM land.

Prediction: Axiom-Acer 5 - 4 Incredible Miracle

IM 5-2

I wouldn't say IM has been mediocre in GSTL lately at all btw. They barely didn't get the 2nd spot in the playoffs and did win the preseason after all. Yoda, Nestea, and Ragnarok also pulled their weight this season outside of the protoss players.

The only one-sided loss they received was a 1-4 from MVP as well.

In fact, unless I missed one. IM has all-killed with a player 3 times this season. More than any other team.

I think the number one thing to remember in trying to understand how Ax-Acer has done as well as they have is to realize that they are Super Sayan Slayers. They are mostly a 2 time GSTL Champion team and a three time GSTL Finalist team, and they have something to prove. Backed by being even MORE fan favourites than Slayers was due to the wonders that is the Total Biscuit hype machine, they have a lot of strengths people take for granted.

With that said, I don't know if they can handle IM in a BO9, but I do know that I'm gonna enjoy watching it either way.
I root for Euro Zergs, NA Protoss* and Korean Terrans. (Any North American who has beat a Korean Pro as Protoss counts as NA Toss)

Okay, this isn't a regular season match, it's playoffs time and I don't think the LG-IM players are messing around.

The obvious threat is YoDa, who just all-killed. Even if he's not going to all-kill again, he is a serious threat and he is certainly good enough to take down one or two players.

So the triple threat of First, YongHwa, and Squirtle are going into this match with plenty of preparation.

Then there's KangHo (who did win in the final day of OSL), and KangHo has always been a player who can all-kill. Even NesTea showed off his all-killing skills this season, though I doubt NesTea will be played here.

Then, we have the somewhat forgotten LG-IM Zerg line of ByuL and RagnaroK. ByuL is said to be a beast in practice, and RagnaroK came through with some crucial kills for LG-IM. Both of them don't have much on their schedules, which points towards potential snipes.

Finally, the old guard of MC and Mvp. Even though MC does not look so hot lately, he's always a dangerous player and he's surprisingly reliable in teamleagues. Mvp, on the other hand, is not a teamleague monster, but he has shown a resurgence lately. I think his TvT can definitely stand up to the likes of Ryung and MMA.

Not all of these players will be fielded, but each one must be accounted for in this long and grueling best of 9. That is exactly why LG-IM is such a deadly opponent.

I will predict LG-IM 5-3! (or 5-1 if Mvp gets fielded)

I love Axiom-Acer and have rooted for them from the beginning of the season...

That being said it's Bo9. Common knowledge looks at the depth of LG-IM as the best in the league mirrored only by MVP. Axiom-Acer is amazing at sniping, but they have too many people to prepare snipes for and as stated in the article if they fail 1-2 snipes then they are in some serious trouble. That being said I want an incredible miracle win for Axiom-Acer (see what I did there)?

With SKT T1 losing in Proleague, I really need Axiom to pull off a victory here to satisfy my fanboy heart. Gogo MMA & Ryung <3
CranK player-coach-driving-cook gogo as well. So much character packed into one team, it'd be awesome to see them take the championship.

I hope for drama, but expect an anticlimactic series with IM advancing to the finals to lose versus MVP.
