$170,000

85k for first place.

I do hope Blizzard advertise this correctly so people actually watch it.

1 Million is overrated. It seems like people forget that the prize pool is split between 5 members...
I mean 200 each is still a lot, but it's not a million. SC2 doesn't need as big a prize pools because it's 1v1 and it has more tournaments anyway.

No, it's like Polt when he won the supertournament.

And btw, Blizzard has invested way more money than Dota 2 for the international I think. They have been paying for travel and accomodation for every player, and supported several tournaments. I know that in terms of prizemoney, all nationals and regionals combined is still lower but Valve and Riot in their tournaments has only put in minimum effort, especially at the international who just had 1 venur for their tournament.
Prize money is just 1 thing to spend money on, the rest is often even more expensive btw.

Also because it's teamsport, you can bet that the teams are taking a big bite of that million as well, and it's only an annual tournament, so as you said, there is way more tournaments

100.000 for first place is still a very big prize. You need to take in considerationa that DOTA 2 is a 5 man team that gets the 1 mil. So still only 200.000 for each. And considering Blizz is investing a lot more money in the national and regional qualifiers this 250.000 prize pool is very very good.

Wow, with that amount of money, imagine like 3-8th place probably gets around 10k or so. That's sick for those spots! Makes TSL and all major events look like childrens play.

Probably something like this:
First place: 100k
Runner up: Max 50k
3-8 place: share 50k
9-32: share 50k

TI2 may have been 1 mil, but its split to 5 people so its 200k per person. Still bigger than this, but its a much better comparison than 100k -> 1 mil

Actually the total prize pool for WCS is around $760k in cash prizes, PLUS paid trips/etc.

The national qualifiers and regional finals plus the grand finals prize money in total adds up to around $760k.
So while the "headline" prize of $250k seems small compared to some things, it's actually a real total prize pool for the entire thing of $760k, but with no way for any one player to win the majority of that total.
HOLY CHECK!

That is a really good prize pool, just saying since that Its pretty rare for sc2 to have that big of a prize pool.

1. Why they used flag of the Olympic team of Chinese Taipei rather than that of Republic of China? That blows.

2. How did they choose direct qualifications for national champions into WC? I kind of understand United States and Canada in NA region or People's Republic of China/South Korea/Republic of China but why France, Germany and Russia in EU? Because of the population? Seems like Sweden and Ukraine is more legitimate choice.

Because France, Germany & Russia might be the bigger national markets for sc2 in EU in terms of sales, so Blizzard wanted to make sure that at least 1 French/German/Russian player would be in the WCS finals

I'm glad they are not making it more top heavy, I know this is Blizzard's tournament and they have the right to pay out as much as they want for it but it would be a little annoying to have someone suddenly win 250k for one tournament while others like mvp/mc/nestea have been winning multiple tournaments for years to get to that point.

conceivably, creator could, if he gets lucky:
10.5k from WCS KR
24K from WCS Asia
100K from WCS Global
=125k ish

i think that's the max anyone can get from the WCS

It could have been 130k, if Vibe would have won everything, because for whatever reason US#1 is higher paid than Kr#1.

I just did some math.. blizzard could host give this prize pool (the entire world championship series) 3,5 times every month based purely off WoW subscription fees, obviously WoW also pays a bunch employees at Blizzard.

The first infos on the WCS GrandFinal Prizepool were just announced by Blizzard.

"As the WCS comes to a close, it’s time for us to shift our focus from the journey to the destination. Earlier this week, we announced the format for the StarCraft II World Championship Series Global Finals. In two short months, 32 of the world’s best StarCraft II players will be traveling to China to compete for both country and a share of the $250,000 prize pool. The winner of the event will be taking home both the prestigious title of StarCraft II World Champion and a $100,000 cash prize."

My personal opinion:

Stop comparing individal prize pools and different games. The money is well spread in DotA2.

Once again stop comparing the two.

random xD why not compare different games oO
nice prizepool :D looking forward to the world finals !

The key thing in Dota2 is, that the scene is really fractured.
I kinda like the one big tournament a year model, because it still has an impact. No one can use bullshit excuses like "XY didn´t play well because he focused on that other tournament"
If you can´t pull your shit together and play your best for 1 Mil, you have no business calling yourself professional.

I stopped following GSL closely after the 4th tournament, I stopped pretending to care after the 8th or so tournament. It has no impact for me anymore. There´s 7 regular tournaments a year plus around some more special tournaments. I just don´t get excited if there is a new "world champion" every 2 months.
I hope this tournament(WCS) can be the one big tournament that you would watch if you can only watch 1.
If nobody hates you, you´re doing something wrong. However someone hating you doesn´t make you right

That's a really good prizepool size. It doesn't overshadow other tournaments and it isn't too small to be worthy of world champion status. People comparing this to the International are wrong. That tournament is never going to be profitable, it's just a hype tournament. Almost like a flexing competition between Riot and Valve

I calculated the total prize money from all national, continent and world championship to be $761,520 (USD?). All numbers take from liquipedia. I don't have the prizepool from Colombia and Peru (it says TBA).

There are also 120 continent seeds and 32 W.C. seeds.
If anyone has any serious prayer requests please PM me. Thx.
