Tournament Roundup - May 1-15 2011
Results for May 1 – May 15, 2011
Greetings and welcome to International Tournament Roundup! Sick of wading through countless threads, posts, and articles looking for recent SC2 tournament results? The TeamLiquid International Tournament Roundup is the one-stop shop for all of your tournament result needs, and it's coming to you twice each and every month.
Don't be fooled, the GSL is great, but there's a massive amount of talent outside of Korea. Foreign juggernauts are battling it out in epic games, and in epic tournaments, on a daily basis. After all, our boys have more than proven that they can compete.
Who's the current top dog outside of Korea?
Please note that if an event is not listed, it is likely because it either didn't make the prizemoney cutoff, or results were simply not properly recorded in public view by tournament administration. Don't blame me, blame the event admins. I can't do their job for them. Thanks!

Top Dog There's a ton of powerhouses outside of Korea, but who's this edition's top dog? Let's take a look at which players have posted the most impressive results over the past 2 weeks.
Note: This isn't a simple prize-money or medals ranking. It is based upon a combination of overall player performance, quality of competition, significance of events won, money won, activity, and my most sincere attempt at unbiased subjectivity. It only considers performances in events which concluded within this period.
+ Show Spoiler [Honorable Mentions] +![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/players/1587.jpg) HasuObs !! Becoming quite a regular in these, this amazing player performed far beyond what many expected in the PokerStrategy TSL3. He took down favorites HuK and MorroW, and slayed the Emperor himself, BoxeR. HasuObs also took home a Sennheiser Cup, as icing on the cake. Total Prizewinnings: ~$1,640 USD ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/players/2169.jpg) SaSe !! Thanks to his amazing performance in the 'Road to Korea' tournament, he's going to Korea to compete in GSL. SaSe went 10-1 in games (5-0 in series) in his group including powerhouses ThorZaIN and LaLuSh. He eventually went on to defeat both Bischu and finalist NaNiwa to steal the tournament. SaSe put a halt to NaNiwa's 35 BoX series winning streak in defeating him. Despite the disappointment of many due to his win over the favorite NaNiwa, SaSe's stellar performance is without a doubt worthy of his prize. I look forward to cheering this guy on in Korea, and you should too! Total Prizewinnings: ~$2,350 USD ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/players/1771.jpg) Nerchio !! Up until now, Nerchio's primary strong performances in lesser cups have been featured here, but this time around he's done something better. If you have any doubts about this guy's skill, do yourself a favor and take a look at his recent Pokerstrategy Call4Kings performance. Strelok 2-0, MorroW 2-0, TT1 3-0, in addition to crushing several other opponents. He didn't drop a single game. In addition to this, he just barely missed out on both a Zotac and Competo Cup win. It wouldn't be the honorable mention category without Nerchio, but he certainly has the potential of taking the number one spot in the future. Total Prizewinnings: ~$1,135 USD

Runner-Up + Show Spoiler [Runner-Up] +
Top Dog + Show Spoiler [The Top Dog] +![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/players/1795.jpg) ThorZaIN !! When I think of this player, all I can manage to conjure in my mind is "Oh my $!ing god." If you haven't watched the Pokerstrategy TSL3 Final, go. Now. The quiet mannered ThorZaIN seemingly feeds off of the stress and pressure of important matches, bringing out impeccable performances worthy of Starcraft legend. We will be talking about ThorZaIN's TSL3 performance for years to come. When we introduce someone to Starcraft 2, we will show them the TSL3 Final VODs with pride. He was the underdog against the GSL Champion FruitDealer. He was the underdog against foreigner legend and defending TSL Champion Tyler. He was the underdog against 2x GSL Champion and arguably best Protoss in the world MC. He was the underdog against TvT beast and top European Terran Kas. He was the underdog against MLG Champion and best performing foreign Protoss NaNiwa. He is ThorZaIN, he gives players nightmares, he may have the best TvP in the world, he is the TSL3 Champion, he is no longer the underdog, he is the Top Dog! Total Prizewinnings: ~$15,000 USD
Medal Podium
Note: Only players with multiple non-showmatch podium appearances are included.

Cool tournament roundup.. WTG Thorzain! IdrA also won a showmatch against Sheth for $200
|
Thanks a lot !!! Can't wait for next month edition ^^

Many thanks for doing these.
I read it every time.

So the top 3 are more for bigger wins than smaller, consistent wins? Just wondering, I'm new to this.

It depends. Both are considered, but naturally larger tournament wins carry a lot more weight. It's based upon strong performances in quality tournaments, not prizemoney or number of golds.
If you're interested in the methods further, you can PM me or go check out some of the previous editions of the roundup.

Thorzain truly deserves to be top dog, thanks for once again consolidating all the tourneys and recurrent cups I cant seem to find enough time to watch....
|
Is there not going to be a late May Edition?
Also 50k is half a month is impressive (although many of the big tournaments started in April and are just finishing up)

Ahh, I see what you mean... The next edition covers the 2nd half of May, but will be coming out somewhere at the start of June.
Perhaps I should change the wording of that up a bit.

Just curious about Naniwa vs Idra.
Right now it looks kinda stupid that Naniwa with 7k in winnings, 2nd place in two big tournaments, including the gigantic TSL which has been running for months and months now if you count the qualifiers, and the insane 35 win streak is somehow below Idra because Idra won an invite only tournament of 16 players...
I'd love to see the math on that one.

Can't count his 35 BOX win streak, as it didn't occur in the past two weeks, and it does directly relate to 'results' anyway. The rank is based on results, as this isn't a power rank. It simply ranks them on performance within tournaments which concluded in the past two weeks. Additionally, prizemoney isn't considered nearly as much as quality of competition and performance. Once again, if you'd like to discuss more, feel free to PM me.

I did PM you (no response as of yet), but I don't see why in a thread ranking the players based on various tournament wins, we can't discuss who did better in said tournaments overall deserving a higher ranking.

Replied! Discussion is certainly fine, I just didn't want to go into methods and/or mindlessly argue over such things here.
|
Best tournament tracker ever. Keep it going, I love 'em
|
I disagree with the top dog pick. He only won like 2 best of five/sevens this month to get it.
I'm not saying he's not an amazing player but maybe the TSL is weighted too heavily.
Great tournament summary though. Very nice to skim through.
|
The problem with giving them to the people with the 'most' wins is that it would go to Europeans who just play those weekly low-prize money tournaments every round-up. Frankly, the highest level of competition isn't at those tournaments and whilst they are pretty good, I find that Thorzain/NaNi/IdrA's achievements to outstrip anyone elses. The order is arguable, but it doesn't really count for anything at the end of the day, right?
|
Spot on, bennyaus.
There's a method to the madness, but it's certainly a little subjective as well. =)
|
these are the most useful posts on TL news. I love you so much. Thanks again for another great update.
|
Keep these up! Much appreciated ! Great Work!
|
again thank you so much to everyone making the tournament roundups. Those post are gems
|
Can't believe I never read one of these roundups before -- great work, thanks for putting this together!

50k+ in 2 weeks! WOO e-sports is taking off :D
P.S. Idra is accidently put as a terran in the top dogs.

Seriously guys, I have spent so much time on all these tourneys....
and I regret none of it
Keep up the awesome work sc2 community!
|
Everyother week its some one who has performed well over multiple tournaments.. this week it's the TSL winner.. surprise surprise... sigh
|
Thank you, great as always
|
Niick, to clarify Naniwa was #1 two editions back for his sole MLG Dallas performance. Also, I put this together myself, and was under no pressure from any of the 'higher ups' to skew the rankings in favor of TSL in any way. I stick by it as I personally don't think I've overstated the significance of the TSL at all.
It's obviously understandable if you disagree with the ranking, and that's totally fine, but to suggest that the ranking is biased because it is TL's tournament isn't quite fair. Neither is backing that statement up with false facts about the history of the ranking.
|
Thanks for another great roundup Mikilatov, its so hard to follow some of these without this convenient thread. Keep up the awesome work
|
Man...everytime I think of thorzain....nerd chills :O
glad to see idra back in action!

Thanks for the write up! So many tournaments going on its easy to miss half of them.

this tournament roundup is so nice, thx for that!

Thorzain "run" also didnt occur in the past two weeks... Only semis and final match. And back to Nanivwa vs Idra argument have to agree to thesmoosh. IPL1 wasnt stacked. Look at the TLPD (only 5 people from the top) and than again only the Idra vs Kiwikaki game occured in may (since you dont count Naniwa streak cause it wasnt in May). I can only quess that idra is 2nd due to the little world that is right next to your nick.

To be honest those tournaments are one of the highest level possible due to dew facts. Quick look at the TLPD and we see like 14 people from 1st page of TLPD playing those cups regularly so saying that the level of those competitions isnt highest is the sign of being total clueless.
To sum it up. It would be good if there was posted a clear method used to determine the top spots in the tournament roundup. /me throws a ball at Mikilatov.

Great roundup, thnx for effort.
Btw. you are missing Thorzain in the medal summary

Reall looking forward to seeing what Thorzain does in the next few months hoping to see a lot more of him!!!!
|
Well, I always took the rankings as the personal opinion of Mikilatov as I think that's what it ultimately comes down to. It's not like he has special insider knowledge no one else has - he compiles the tournament results (which are all public), and once these are posted everyone's on the same page anyway.
But if Mikilatov wants to lend a bit more legitimacy to these, it certainly wouldn't hurt to post the method of determination. That said, I'd totally be fine if this would simply stay as a subjective it's-my-opinion-kind of deal.
On May 17 2011 17:28 Jaxx wrote:Great roundup, thnx for effort. Btw. you are missing Thorzain in the medal summary Only players with multiple non-showmatch podium appearances are included.
Thorzain "only" placed podium in one tournament.
|
Thanks for all the comments guys. <3
I'll make some slight changes to the explanation to the method, and that should clear things up some, although of course there will still be some disagreements, haha. I'm actually surprised it took something like 6 editions for people to state their disagreement. =P Also Frankton, I believe you're misunderstanding how the roundup works. It covers each event which concluded within the period, even if the entire tournament didn't occur within the period.
|
Naniwa 2nd Idra 3rd this should have been the real podium. This is how I feel and I'm not the only one. Anyway good job with this thread so far, keep up the good work.

Great writeup as always, a very useful feature of the site
|
i like these writeups. so you can see quite clearly who takes top places on the weekly tournaments and therefore see some development of new players like happy. i dont care so much on the order of the topdogs since they are pretty obvious but more on the notable player section.
keep the work up
|
Oh shit UBC (university of british columbia) takes first in the CSL, not a huge suprise though vancouver has around 12 or so players in the top 200 (at least) and a few of those guys go to ubc ^^
Stalife used to go there, i think hes taking the year off, and firezerg as well.
GO vancouver! :D

The RQTV Open #1 Finalist is Titan ... a protoss from Russia and not the US Zerg.

I will second this statement.
ot: Thanks once again, love these write-ups! <3
|
I love Thorzain and I agree with him being first in this ranking, but the hype is getting a bit absurd. His TvP is the best in the world because of 3 online games? I don't think so.
|
So helpful. Thanks so much for putting this together!
|
Damn there is some good money here
|
I really want to see Stephano in bigger tournaments than the weekly ones, he makes insane amounts of zerglings such that he can't 1a if he wanted to.
|
As to the controversy on the rankings, I vote to continue with subjective rankings. The overall quality of the write-ups has been great. The fact that you are reviewing all these tournaments and doing all of this writing has not only earned you the right to your opinion, but made me and probably others interested in what your opinion is. We already have ELO rankings for those who want a more objective system. And in the end, the best tournament performance over 1/2 a month doesn't really amount to all that much, given the wide variety in participation and formats over these tournaments. It is fun to talk about and argue a little, but there is no reason to get mean or make accusations over it.
Anyway you are doing a lot of work and doing a great job. Of course you will keep improving and making changes, but don't do anything drastic based on one week of comments.
|
Well, I don't really agree with the Naniwa/Idra ranking, but I very appreciate the effort put into this thread.
Personally, I hope to see fewer small tournaments where only the winner gets some prize money / show matches and more bigger cups which rewards players who place high. I think that will help esport to become bigger.

Always very happy to read these and glad that you're around to keep track of all these great tournaments. I'm not entirely sure why all these people are coming out now with their disagreements either. In fact I'm not really sure why people are questioning these methods. If people disagree then they should put in the same amount of work as you do to put up this great summary of events every two weeks.
Anyway, I don't want to get more into this. it's really not important enough to give attention. Keep up the good work! I like how you emphasize ThorZaIN going from the constant underdog to being the Top Dog.

I've had a hard time finding it... Does anyone know what happened (or where i can find a bracket) of that chinese tournament 'stars war' ?
i've had a hard time finding any information about it.

Thanks for the round up! I can never get enough of Jinro's pic lol.
|
thorzain totally deserved this <3
|
Thanks for this, always a good read. Obviously this week's winnings are particularly big with 2 notable tournies finishing up, I can't wait til December to see an annual rundown on the top... say 20 Korean and non-Korean (to avoid just listing GSL champs and runners up) SC2 earners.
|
The medal podium is a great idea! Maybe put the prize money won in the next column?
|
Why is it the same picture every time? You should probably acquire some new pictures
|
Nice round up, but i cant agree with Idra being #2, infact i dont even think i would put him in the top 3 if winnings has nothing to do with it. Nerchio has been immense lately. I would go Thorzain, Nani, Nerchio.
|
e-sport is ALIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
God I love these!! Nothing like seeing ThorZaIN as top dog, so siked about that :D Also, has anyone really been closely following Nerchio in every one of these tournament roundups? If you haven't, go back and check, this guy is building an empire in Europe right now (pun intended). He's gonna be the next big thing, and could easily become the best Zerg in Europe with time.
|
It's quite interesting that the NA scene revolves around show matches while the weekly tournaments dominates the EU scene. I believe EU is benefiting from this, these high quality tournament are great practice for how to play and think in tournaments, it could explain some of why the NA scene seems to lag behind a bit.

Yeah, Nerchio's constant success each edition is pretty amusing to me, really. Guys like Nerchio are my favorite part about putting this together every couple weeks. Honestly, I would barely even know the guy exists otherwise. I'd imagine it's the same for most other people, as following the results of all these little cups is a bit difficult. So glad to see him take a bigger event with such dominance recently, too!

Very Happy With This Tournament Tracker Had No Idea It Was So Many Events Going On In Starcraft!
|
I believe Thor deserves this rank. His ascension through the TSL was the thing of SC2 legend. It's been a long time since I've been so impressed with a total stranger. Guys is made of nails! Idra climbing was only a matter of time. Great to see him adjusting well to being away from Korea.

TL a step above the rest! This is why TL will always remain to be the best community for e-sports in the world, the content provided is just amazing! Good job guys, keep it up.

gg IdrA. Glad to see ThorZaiN with the #1 podium spot, since he won the greatest tournament in the roundup. Nice to see dde putting up good results, and it's also nice to see consistent EU players dominating week after week.

Besides the Final Edits of course, these Tournament Roundups are the articles Im always anticipating the most. Thanks so much!! *gives credit*

Gonna try to keep it short.
What makes me love the Tournament Roundups is the fact that it is NOT written in an objective perspective. The personal spice Mikilatov brings to the content of the post is amazing, and it wouldn't be entertaining otherwise. If you're looking for something completely balanced I am sure there's a mathematical formula you can analyze in awe and see who's the REAL "top dog".
No, to me the charm about it all is the effort made in constructing the Tournament Roundups from the spectators interpretation of the events covered. So I second the vote to keep the subjectivity and mix in emotions! And most likely, if the Tournament Roundup would be broken down into pieces and completely analyzed from an objevtive perspective, there'll certainly be readers posting "but I feel player X made a much better effort", feel being the keyword.
So I say go for it, stick to the subjectivity! It's not balanced. It's not supposed to be!
Best, Kim

To everyone barking about Go4SC2 #104, isn't that one of the wednesday cups that offers no prize money? There's prizemoney cutoffs, and this certainly doesn't include events with ZERO prizemoney. It would take an army to cover that.

Great write up, you should release the criteria or award the top tog like $50 haha.
|
I don't really understand why people disagree with who the writer puts as top dog, either you put money earned (which really does not matter much) or you put your (the writer) own opinion on who has gotten good results. If you don't like it I bet you could ask to do all this yourself and choose your top dog.
|
Whoa, go UBC. I didn't realize my alma mater was a power in in collegiate SC2. Apparently I should have paid more attention to those dudes at the campus SC2 club.

Also there are too many tournaments for there to be one clear top player.

Been a good month for the Zerg. Nice to see some top placings.
Gratz to IdrA on IGN proL season 1.
Fear the Grack!

Im quite happy about that roundup... very important to have an idea about the scene, as it is currently difficult to have a good overview. keep up the good work
|
I really appreciate the huge amount of effort, that is put into these tournament roundups. Thank you very much and keep 'em coming!
|
these round ups are so great... thanks!
|
naniwa thorzain and idra are prob the top 3 foreigners for each race atm, fitting they would be the top 3 prize winners
|
Any ETA for the next one of these? :3
|
i'm missing an update as well, hope the reports are continued
|
Bumping in hopes for more roundups!
|
Yeah, that was one of the most fun things to read. Is the person doing that gone? If it is so, can someone continue his legacy? :D
|
I do agree, I keep checking every day for a new iteration of this. I just cannot keep up with everything which is going on, and the tournament roundups are a great way to keep track of players, development of the scene, vods to check out, etc. Also, whenever some player I am a fan of manages a place in the top 3 I am happy .
