Tournament Roundup - Apr 15-30 2011
Results for April 15 – April 30, 2011
Greetings and welcome to International Tournament Roundup! Sick of wading through countless threads, posts, and articles looking for recent SC2 tournament results? The TeamLiquid International Tournament Roundup is the one-stop shop for all of your tournament result needs, and it's coming to you twice each and every month.
Don't be fooled, the GSL is great, but there's a massive amount of talent outside of Korea. Foreign juggernauts are battling it out in epic games, and in epic tournaments, on a daily basis. After all, our boys have more than proven that they can compete.
Who's the current top dog outside of Korea?
Please note that if an event is not listed, it is likely because it either didn't make the prizemoney cutoff, or results were simply not properly recorded in public view by tournament administration. Don't blame me, blame the event admins. I can't do their job for them. Thanks!

Total Prizemoney: ~$41,295 USD (+ Prizes!)
Top Dog There's a ton of powerhouses outside of Korea, but who's this edition's top dog? Let's take a look at which players have posted the most impressive results over the past 2 weeks.
Note: This isn't a prize-money or medals ranking, but instead based upon overall player performance.
+ Show Spoiler [Honorable Mentions] +We've got a lot of honorable mentions this edition, as there were a ton of huge tournament winners as well as strong performing players in smaller cups.![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/images/liquibet/players/noimage.jpg) Spanishiwa !! While not showing up in any tournament results, this fan-favorite stole "The V" showmatch series championship from the recent dominator Minigun and defended it twice against scary opposition in Axslav and KawaiiRice. Additionally, he took a showmatch win for his team against Complexity's Stalife. Check out the exciting showmatch series "The V" to see if Spanishiwa can continue to defend his title! Total Prizewinnings: ~$400 USD ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/players/2889.jpg) Happy !! Out of nowhere, this lesser renowned player in the sea of Russian Terrans showed up in force. Taking home 3 cups, and almost a 4th, he snatched a Go4SC2 Cup, a Competo Cup, a Close Combat Cup, and narrowly missed out on a Sennheiser Cup. Any other edition of the roundup, you'd see the performance of Happy take a top 3 spot, however his impressive run will have to take a backseat to the major event winners of this past 2 weeks. Total Prizewinnings: ~$555 USD ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/players/1771.jpg) Nerchio !! A major developing pattern continues to run its course this edition, as Empire's Nerchio once again snatches up a ton of cup wins. He earned 1st prize at a Gamecreds Cup, a Sennheiser Cup, and SK's Champion's Trophy, as well as placing 2nd in a Zotac Cup. As with Happy, the amazing Cup performances of Nerchio will have to take a back seat to major tournament winners this edition. Total Prizewinnings: ~$550 USD ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/players/1614.jpg) NaNiwa !! Taking down yet another large event, the always entertaining NaNiwa once again stole the show, the Gadget Show, that is. Don't forget to tune in and watch this monster fight in the TSL against the underdog HasuObs on Sunday! Total Prizewinnings: ~$3,340 USD ![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/players/1667.jpg) Adelscott !! The gateway king took the lucrative first prize in the main event at the highly overlooked Gamer's Assembly tournament. It's no surprise really, as his recent TSL3 performances have shown this great player's potential. Total Prizewinnings: ~$4,450 USD
Third + Show Spoiler [Third] +![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/players/1777.jpg) SjoW !! Despite a lack of serious event wins recently, SjoW has certainly never come close to falling off the radar. He changed the former part of that statement when he smashed through the competition at the monstrous LAN event 'The Gathering', raking in top dollar of an equally monstrous 1st place prize. He also narrowly missed victory in a Sennheiser Cup, and participated in the Gadget Show, placing 5th/6th. Total Prizewinnings: ~$5,520 USD
Runner-Up + Show Spoiler [Runner-Up] +
Top Dog + Show Spoiler [The Top Dog] +![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/players/1693.jpg) Kas !! While the competition was very close this edition, the Ukraine Freight Train has done it again. While that may not actually be his nickname, it should be, as Kas continues to add bullet points to the presentation arguing that he is the best Terran in Europe. On this edition's slide, we've got two top performances in two major events among the highest level of competition: A 1st place performance in the competitive HomerJ Cup Grand Final, and a 2nd place run in the Copenhagen Games. While he may have lost the Copenhagen final, it was against none other than most feared man in SC2: MC. Interestingly enough, his next TSL opponent ThorZaIN is also arguably the best Terran in Europe, having taken down MC recently. You'd be absolutely insane to miss out on ThorZaIN vs. Kas in the TSL this Saturday. If you find yourself playing this guy in an online event, you'd better be up on your rabies shots, because Kas is a serial Top Dog. Total Prizewinnings: ~$4,650 USD
Medal Podium
Note: Only players with multiple non-showmatch podium appearances are included.

that's quite a lot of prize money for only 2 weeks of tournaments!
|
great round up. thanks for that
|
Wow looking good! + Show Spoiler +MKP finally taking a first place haha and Grubby beating morrow for third place :o, least grubby has a medal by his SC2 Career now . :D.
|
Kas is a beast and HasuObs is getting better and better. The TSL semi finals will be great.

so few zergs! and no goody! D:
|
oh gosh look at all the money in the eu scene. quite a few players with 2k euro and above.
and Spanishiwa beasting it up.
|
Awesome round-up, thanks
Empire has a really strong lineup at the moment. :O Best eu-terran and awesome zerg. Really looking forward to them!
|
EU kicking ass eh?
40,000 dollars in prize money in 15days...
Can you imagine if something like that happened back in BW? People would freak out about 40dollars.
|
pretty nice prize money (:
|
Uhh MarineKing was protoss in the FXOpen?
|
Pretty dissapointing couple of weeks, yep. Sc2 is dying. :D

Heh, my bad. He played P in SC1. =P

Pretty notable amount of medium sized (say, 2000-6000ish Euro prize money) going on. Thats pretty cool. I wonder if it will keep up like that for the rest of the year or if this was just a stacked tournament period. Seems to be mostly in EU too.
|
Is this roundup for EU only or is NA included?
|
On May 02 2011 18:51 Dimorgh wrote: Is this roundup for EU only or is NA included?
It'd literally take you less than 4 seconds to figure that out for yourself.
|
Wow thats alot of money. If i remember correct hasuObs won UGC. That would make an additional 3000$. Pretty nice
|
great roundup always like to read them. Cool to see so many lans with pretty decent pricemoney.
|
One does not defeat Kas.
I'm glad to see Happy finally win something. He's been sitting of the top of the EU ladder for such a long time.
|
I love these roundups. SC is exploding so much in Europe and its nice to know how players are doing :D
|
|
I'm really really impressed by certain people like Kas, Hasu, Nerchio etc. they are always winning something. Kas is obviously the machine. I would be very afraid if he is going to attend to more offline events and starts to perform like in copenhagen.

btw ye thorzain shines in tvp but his other matchups arent near top notch. sry, no offense intended, but it just is not true
|
@ OP : ZpuX is swedish, I guess he's still playing Zerg.
Anyway, great roundup as always.

You may be right, but I'm not entirely sure. It's kind of been the policy of mine to NOT include KOTH events due to the fact that they're usually a bit less prize oriented, have varied prize pools, offer monetary rewards awkwardly, grant varied 'unfair' opportunities to players based upon order of play, are difficult to report, and are often confusing and poorly reported by organizers. FXOpen puts on far better shows than most of course, so it's hard to overlook these. I'm going to leave these out for now, but perhaps I'll look into it for the future.

I agree about Kas being #1 Terran in EU, but to say that nobody would argue ThorZain may be better is a bit short-sighted. Especially since he just 3-2'ed MC while Kas got 4-0'ed by MC. I'm sure there's plenty of voices on ThorZain's side, whether we agree with it or not.
|
It is hard to say anything about Thorzain's shapes since we have only seen him play in BoX series with long time of preparation. Would be nice to see him play once in open online cup or some big lan...
|
Thanks once again Mikilatov!
Pretty insane prize money for a two weeks period. Hope you stick with this until December at least so we can have an overall statistic for money in western SC2 tournaments in 2011. :D
Kas is a goddamn machine, he plays so many cups and places so well so consistently. Among the best Terrans in Europe no doubt.

He did fail to make it out of the group stages of that Rakaka tournament to send someone to Korea, and Nightend ended up beating him pretty comprehensively (3-1) at the Gathering.
===
Thanks as usual for an excellent recap Mikilatov =)

Nice to see ex-wc3 EU players dominate the international scene.
Seems to me that the US isnt getting as much cups as EU server ? Or are EU ppl winning them too ? I mean yeah you got your invite only showmatches but weekly cups are the most important the up and coming young players wich in most cases have most talent than those playing in showmatches etc ...
|
OMG :D
+ Show Spoiler +
As someone said above, that's an insane amount of prize money for two weeks!
|
Marineking should get an honorable mention for getting his 1st Gold ever!! :p
Also, while Thorzain has unarguably the best TvP in Europe, maybe the world, Kas is a much more well-rounded player, having almost 70% win-rate in all MU's. Remember, ThorZain has sub-50 winrate in TvT, however we shall see come next weekend with the TSL. ThorZain is sort of a TvP specialist, while Kas is a reeeeally good Terran.
|
<3 Spanishiwa! Hope to see him fighting for top dog in the near future.
+ Show Spoiler +Also, hooray for MKP finally taking a gold in the FXOPEN
|
no zerg in the top 3 of any featured turnament at all thats quite bad for me i guess where can i get good reps now?

love this feature each week! Amazing how consistent some players are!
WOW @ KAS
|
soo much money involved craziness
|
It is a great feeling to see your own name in the write up. Also 40,000 in 15 days, and nothing infalting it like MLG/NASL/Dreamhack.
That's a lot of money, sc2 is growing nicely as an esport
|
Nice job. Love reading the TL news ^^ I can't really keep up with the huge amount of production of leagues, show matches and whatnot all over the world, so these really come in handy to see who's on top. Lot's of love ♥
|
So many medium sized (5k-10k) tournaments in EU, they do not get enough exposure. Kas is scary!

So Kas is best in Europe in TvT and TvZ (although I honestly would give both to Jinro(yeah he's European)), but Thorzain is best in the World in TvP. I don't see how you can disregard that so swiftly. Also we havn't seen much TvT or TvZ out of thorzain lately, but he roflstomped Fruitdealer, and we don't know what he has up his sleeve for Kas in the semi finals.
Don't count him out just because of a "bad" 50% TvT win ratio. His TvZ and TvP are both on 70% according to liquipedia.
I'm not gonna go so far as to say that he's the best terran in Europe, but I dare say he's arguably up there
|
As great as always. Can't thank you enough for this

gadget show tournament was pound not euro btw
|
Team Empire taking 3 out of the first 5 spots for this month.. scary team for sure.
|
|
|
Just becuase kas lost to MC in the copenhagen final doesnt mean he is bad at TvP.
Kas was so nervous and you could clearly see he wasnt playing his best..Give Kas time as soon he get used to be in the front stage he can beat everyone..
Kas is defiantly one of the worlds best players atm

Kas has shown far better games in every single matchup recently compared to Jinro.
And no, MC doesn't have the best PvT in the world, and even if he does, he certainly didn't play it that day.

This is not even all of the tournaments either NESC2 League featured a little over 300 dollars in prizes as well. As well I'm there were many other small cash tournaments not listed.

Thanks guys, I'm glad all this work every couple weeks is helping a lot of people.

You're right. There's prizemoney cutoffs (based upon tournament types), as many people aren't terribly interested in the majority of these regional events and $10 online cups. While there may be tournaments listed here with less dollar value than events such as the NESC2 League, the cutoff for smaller regional events is much higher than that of let's say, an online cup.
The reasoning for this is because these regional events often require buy-ins from the players and do not generally draw NEARLY the competition level that these online cups do. Additionally, the prizes often aren't in the form of actual money, but minor sponsor loot (keyboards, cases, mouses, etc.). I mean, even *I* have placed top 8 in a tournament with a $2,500 pool (~$1000 money, ~$1500 prizes), and I'm mid-master's league (at best). In short, accessibility and level of competition are considered when compiling this roundup, however if the money pool is high enough (Around $300-400+ with no buy-ins), it's gonna be added anyway.

Wow, way to go Kas. This guy is a monster.

Good stuff as usual ! You missed one important thing though, the "real Go4SC2 #100" which was an invitational-only cup with only players who won 2+ Go4SC2 (Kas, BratOK, Adel, Stephano, Cloud...)
Stephano placed first beating Sjow, Naama, Kas and finally Cloud 3-1 in the finals (!)

edit : My bad I thought it was older !

imperYal, I'm very aware of the event, you linked the wrong event's bracket, and the event you're referring to didn't occur during this edition's time period. It'll be up in next edition.

Great round up I look forward to reading more of these, thanks!

It's ridiculous how many tournaments there are. I try to keep up but I've seen like 2 of these, and more than half of them I think I've never even heard of.
Great write up, made me realize how much is really going on right now in SC2.
As others have said, it would be awesome to find a better system to display tournament info in an easy to find way beyond TL threads and the schedule because I feel a lot of these tournaments could disappear if they believe there isn't enough interest, when in reality it's just that no one actually knows they are going on.
Anyway, congratulations to all the winners!
|
I envy Kas T.T He makes so much money from these smaller tournaments every month sooooo good!!!

To you guys, and to anyone else who has this problem, check out the TL BIG event tracker by clicking on 'events' at the of the page. Additionally, you can find a lot of these smaller events by visiting the normal tournament tracker (Events --> Tournament Tracker). Lastly, the TL calendar also gives you some great info on tournaments that are incoming.
While the sources just listed may not cover -EVERYTHING- they cover nearly every online tournament that is properly run, reported, and advertised (And most of the major offline ones too). Most of the tournaments that go unnoticed are NOT the fault of TL or the community, but of the people who run them. For example, take a look at the thread for 'Gamer's Assembly'. That's the only mention of this tournament on this forum that I'm aware of, and it wasn't even written by tournament staff. If someone is organizing a tournament THAT LARGE, and isn't taking the few minutes to properly make a post about it on TL, that's their failure. Their big, huge, dumb, failure. Alternatively, look at an event like the Copenhagen Games. It has about the same prize pool, but managed to draw way more top level players and a ton of attention from the community. Why? Because it was handled better.

Not only is it in the content, but WHO posted it. The only reason Gamer's Assembly was even on TL was because some heroic member decided "wtf, why didn't they mention this on TL anywhere?" The first of the two was in the calendar, and big tournament tracker as well.
All in all, You can't blame the community if nobody tells them in the first place. Whoever ran Gamer's Assembly had ample opportunity to submit/offer information for the TL Big tournament tracker, the TL tracker, the calendar, and to make a thread, but they didn't. If they don't want to spring to do that, it's also unlikely they'd spring to offer that same information to a 'news site'.
I'm not entirely sure that an SC2 'news site' like you guys are suggesting would do any better than TL at being a hub for upcoming tournament information. =)

Kas is a monster. He literally makes 5k ish every time there is one of these.

Kas as amazing as always.

But no I don't have much better idea, although i think wellplayed.org was a kind of nice idea, but yeah, not really perfect too
But cuz of the Status Quo this writeup is even better + more important!

They are looking for writers to cover more events in depth here at TL you know?

A bit more numbers for you:
In the 5 issues of this round up, ~$176,955 USD has been given out in cash, plus all the prizes. I don't have the time to dig up January 1st through February 13th, but I'd guess that probably another $25k (plus prizes) was given out over that span, putting us close to $200k in SC prize money alone for the year, and we're only 4 months in.
Bigger tournaments are in store for the rest of the year, so I'm guessing that we'll see SC2 prize money clear $750k this year, if not more. $1M is a very real possibility with some of the prize handouts coming up in the coming months (TSL, more MLG, NASL...)

Once we hit some sort of reasonable time period, I plan to put together some sort of stat sheet. =)
Cool stuff, that's a ton of money compared to BW. =)

I eventually dug up the numbers (I found time...) and by my count, 2011 has yielded roughly $235,925 in prize money so far, but my numbers don't match up with yours exactly, some months are drastically different.

Thanks for the information, I'm not going to go over it all and try to find why the numbers don't match up, because I've already done all this research for the past 5 editions and I know it's solid, but here's some potential reasons for why they'd be different.
1. This isn't a 'monthly' thing as you said, it's a bi-weekly thing. 2. You have no way of knowing the cutoff values imposed (based on tournament type) for I don't believe I've ever released them publicly. 3/4. If your values are lower than mine, you may not have been as thorough as I was. TLPD doesn't cover everything. You've gotta dig much deeper than that. If your values are higher than mine, you're probably counting events that don't make the previously mentioned cutoff values, or counting lesser events that never publicly recorded results/dates/winners/prizedistribution.
If you'd like to go into it further, PM me.

Will never understand why Jinro looks scared/sad in that picture.

Yeah. I probably covered a few things a bit more leniently than you, but still. All the money I did show was given out, so it's still prize money - kinda crazy to see that much.
