MLG kicks off its 2011 progaming circuit in Dallas, Texas, the same city where Liquid`Jinro took home the MLG national championship last year. This time around, vast improvements have been made to all corners of the competition. MLG has added additional seating, a different tournament format, and a larger prize pool ($14,000). MLG's Pro Circuits have become must-see StarCraft 2 events, and many spectators will travel from afar to check out the matches on MLG's main stage, casted by Day9, djWHEAT, and JP.
For players, every MLG Pro Circuit event is another chance to earn a high seed at MLG's National Championship, which boasts a $120,000 prize pool. A week’s break from the TSL3 will let the fans fully indulge in MLG Dallas, and they will not be disappointed. Let us take a quick look at our competitors for MLG Dallas.
Pool A
EG.IdrA remains the center of attention entering Dallas, as this would mark his first major tournament after departing Korea in order to enrich the North American ESPORTS’ scene with his presence. However, his return has been a little bit bumpy of a ride. IdrA has not had the chance to post results due to the lack of major tournaments around this time of the year, and an early bounce in the TSL adds further speculations about his current form. IdrA will be looking to make a statement in Dallas, answering all his critics and finally have a chance to tell GOM that he’s still alive and well. ROOT.KiWiKaKi and aTn.Socke will battle it out to slowly the climb the ladder of the best Protoss in the West. Recently moved in to form one of the very first team houses in NA, Kiwikaki is never short of tricks that will definitely please the crowd. Hopefully, he won’t have to dual-box both his account and Athenewins. Socke’s confidence will draw from his recent golds in the Justin.TV Invitational #2 and SK-Gaming EU champions victory. Last but not least, is Gretorp. While we’ve all seen Gretorp working tirelessly to bring the NASL alive, not much of Gretorp’s actual gameplay has been seen recently. He’ll enter the tournament as a mystery, which definitely can work to his advantage.
Back in the USA, will Dallas make MLG DC champ EG.IdrA happy?
Pool B
Liquid`Ret luckily only has one match-up to prepare for his pool, but his opponents are definitely not pushovers. The Assembly champion is comfortable at home, and the only thing scarier than a Ret is a well-rested Ret. And then we have the Terrans. If his computer is running fine and dandy, dignitas.SeleCT is one of NA’s best Terrans. Seeing that he was inches away from a TSL spot, SeleCT will be hungry for any sort of consolation, and perhaps the best prize is to crush some more players. Unfortunately for Dignitas, a team-kill might happen, as dignitas.SjoW happens to be in the same group. Sjow’s tournament results have been all over the place, and his lack of consistent results has plagued him ever since release. On the other hand, it could just mean that MLG Dallas is the crest of his tournament cycle. FXOQxc rounds up the seeded players in the group. Fresh off his victory over Genius in the TSL, Qxc will participate in his first live tournament under FXO, and he is out to reassure his new team that he is capable of becoming the team’s ace. On a side note, hopefully his winning interview will be less than an hour.
Liquid`Ret vs EG.Grubby at Assembly Winter 2011, courtesy of SK Gaming. Will we see this matchup at MLG Dallas?
Pool C
The group originally started with all 4 seeds having a different starting race choice, but it seems that TLO will be returning to Dallas playing Terran instead. LG.PainUser sits at the highest seeded player in the group, thanks to miraculous run and third place finish last year. His run through the loser’s bracket ultimately ended in a loss against the runner-up TT1, but through the course of that run, PainUser managed to demonstrate his creativity and knock out some of the biggest names in the business. Up until two weeks ago, PainUser’s attendance was up in the air as his possible inclusion in GOM’s world tournament would mean that he would have to skip out on Dallas. A disappointing loss to TT1 removed him from contention, and MLG Dallas is where he’ll look to redeem himself. Last year, ROOT.SLusH has consistently placed among the top 12 finishes at every single event, earning him the 6th seed entering the 2011 circuit. Recovering from carpal tunnel syndrome, Liquid`TLO has wow’ed us time and time again, most recently in a legendary showdown against NaDa in TSL3. TLO will look to make his team and also his new sponsor, Sony Ericsson, proud. Whether he advances or not remains to be seen, but we all know that TLO's games are guaranteed to entertain. Pool C’s lowest seed is EG.iNcontroL, a household name in the StarCraft community. Do not let the seeding fool you. Recently, iNcontroL has been showered with new responsibilities, with the toughest being his involvement with NASL. While his workload would seem unfathomable for any normal player, iNcontroL still finds the time to practice, and at his best, iNcontroL is one scary bear.
TLO is Terran again, and hopes his new (old) race will result in a top finish.
Pool D
The last group of our seeded players is perhaps the most unpredictable group. The highest seeded player in the groups is ROOT.Drewbie, co-founder of ROOT and one of the oldest Terrans since the beta. Drewbie has been quiet ever since the new year turned around, and now would be a good time for him to demonstrate why he was one of the dominating pillars in the early days of SC2. A difference of 25 MLG points separate Drewbie from the next seed, the defending TSL champion Liquid`Tyler. Tyler has steadily moved up in the rankings each of the previous MLGs, rounding up the year with a top 4 finish last November. Having to juggle MLG and his TSL title defense, Tyler will be on point as his preparations are second to none. Anything below 1st place would be a disappointment for our chill Toss. A relatively lesser-known player is LG.Agh, grabbing the 12th seed of our competition. A Protoss of unknown potential, Agh could provide the upset that fans are waiting to see. The last seed in the group is EG.Machine, who thankfully did not land in the same group as iNcontroL this time. Machine finished 6th in Dallas last year, after making a quick exit both MLGs earlier. If he wishes to come out of this group in a respectable standing, Machine will have replicate his monstrous run again.
As the top seed in Group D, Drewbie is searching for his first semifinals appearance at MLG.
Open Bracket
Those who were not able to place in the top 16 in terms of ranking points have to go through the hellish process of an open bracket. Containing a maximum of 256 players, the talent pool in this portion of circuit is insane. Players from EG, Fnatic, complexity, ROOT, and sixjax.NRG are all present, hoping to make top 16 in order to proceed to the next stage of the event. Several players have flown across the ocean and making their debut MLG appearance, such as Naniwa and Grubby. In addition, our favorite Biebertoss HuK and handsome HayprO will also travel from Korea and make an appearance to help Liquid defend Jinro's title. It is a shame that most of these matches will not be broadcast, because among them, there could be a match to remember.
MLG Dallas 2011 Open Bracket: Who to Watch By Hot_Bid
A last minute addition to MLG Dallas, HuK will have to fight through the Open Bracket.
6. Rebound and Redemptions
It's been a tough few weeks for Liquid`Haypro and Fnatic.Fenix. Both have been regarded as elite players but both have shown disappointing results lately. Fenix bombed out of IEM world championships (0-10 in groups) and was eliminated from the TSL3 by his teammate Sen. While you can hardly blame him for losing to his Code S level teammate, Fenix is looking to show some better results, like when he beat oGsTOP at DreamHack or when he won IEM New York. Those results seem far away, but Fenix has the ability to play on that level.
Haypro has dropped out of TSL3 as well, and recently failed at Code A Qualifiers, losing to fOu Protoss TopClass, who also beat IEM runner-up Moon on his way to qualifying for Code A. While his results in team leagues for Liquid are encouraging, and his win over Tyler at Pax was also impressive, Haypro has yet to show us a big individual tournament win. Coming out of a very strong Open Bracket at MLG will do a lot to silence the critics.
5. Personality Zergs
You probably know of CatZ and Destiny. Both are fun and outspoken, generating endless entertainment for their fans through their words and creative play. But can you name any tournaments they've won? Both players are aiming to take the next step in their careers to prove they aren't just entertainers that play well, but serious contenders for any tournament they enter. CatZ will have his chance this weekend and in the NASL, where his ridiculously stacked group includes IEM winner ST_Ace, Assembly winner Liquid`Ret, and two time GSL Champion oGs.MC. Destiny, freshly recruited by CatZ to ROOT, will have thousands of eager Steve Bonnell stream fans watching his every result. The open bracket will be Destiny's first true test as a ROOT member, and a big moment for his career.
4. Pure Potential
That nice guy with the smile and Miss Universe girlfriend, he can play WarCraft 3 quite well. He's kind of a big deal. But in the cutthroat world of ESPORTS, it's all about "what have you done for me lately?" Nobody doubts EG.Grubby has the potential to be one of the best, and his legions of fans sit and wait for his RTS skills to translate to StarCraft 2. We can all see it: he's getting better. But before Grubby can even think of Korea and the GSL, he's got to make a breakthrough at an event like Assembly or IEM or MLG. Is it only a matter of time? This weekend we'll know if it's "now" or "not yet."
3. Smiles and Rivals
Complexity's CrunCher burst onto the scene by winning TSL3 Qualifier #3, defeating Fenix 3-0 and using a mothership to boot. He went on to defeat PainUser and Sjow in showmatches, and then hit a hot streak in the FX Open Invitational, taking out Koreans oGsInCa, MarineKing, and Check. Oh, and in case you haven't heard, he beat EG.IdrA 2-1 and punctuated it with a now infamous smiley face and biting post-game interview. Everyone's secret wish is that CrunCher makes it through the bracket and is sent into IdrA's group. The rivalry between these two individuals and their teams as well make for some nice drama behind a simple StarCraft 2 best-of-three. Here's to hoping it happens.
2. Europe to North America
Two top Europeans travel for the first time to MLG -- Dignitas.NaNiwa and Virus.Naama. Naniwa has grown to be one of the top Protoss players in Europe, and looks to build on his TSL3 Ro32 win over Liquid`Ret by potentially joining his teammates SeleCT and SjoW in the MLG Championship Bracket. Naama, who recently left Mousesports to join the French team Virus, has one major tournament win under his belt: DreamHack Winter 2010, where he defeated oGsTOP and mouz.MaNa to take first place. Nobody would be surprised to see these two play in the finals of any major European tournament, and here they are fighting for a spot in MLG's Open Bracket. Good luck, North America!
1. New Code, Same Champ?
MLG's #1 ranked player, Liquid`HuK, was at first not attending MLG Dallas 2011. However, a quick exit from the GSL World Championships at the hands of IM.Mvp allowed him to rush back to the United States in time to compete. Unfortunately, he won't get an automatic spot in groups, but he will be the #1 seed in the Open Bracket, which just became that much harder. A month ago HuK became the only third foreigner ever to advance into Code S in GSL, and his fans hope that HuK can be the first player to win two MLGs (Raleigh 2010, Dallas 2011?). HuK returns to North America with his trademark fan-favorite persona, but make no mistake, he's quite a different player than he was back in November. Can HuK's newly acquired, Korean-refined skills blaze through the long road in front of him, from Open Bracket back to MLG champion? We'll see.
Next: Live Updates from MLG Dallas 2011
Team Liquid will be in Dallas to provide on-site coverage! Expect a live blog, twitter updates, pictures, and video. Tune in to the MLG preview show with Day[9] and djWHEAT at 5:15 PM CDT (6:15PM EDT / 12:15AM CET / 7:15AM KST) ! See you there !
Grubby wont go to korea for GSL. If he wanted to move somewhere else he could have gone to china for Warcraft 3 ECL which is quite big and Chinese team would pay him great.
Incontrol to be top 2 in his group. He's been downright unlucky in some his results. For example, he was 1-2 rounds away from the points in like 3 TSL qualifiers in a row only to lose in a PvP. It's about time for a little of bit luck to swing his way so I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a strong result from him in this MLG.
After Listening to StoG last night im excited to see IdrA play. Incontrol made it sound like Idra would be playing a whole different and exciting style of Zerg.
Personally even tho he lost to Cruncher, his macro and multitasking during those games were still top class. If he just changes some of the way he utilizes his army. He should have good results.
I assume the times listed on the schedule are Central Daylight Time, is that correct? I hate time zones. With does that stupid earth have to be a globe.
"IdrA will be looking to make a statement in Dallas, answering all his critics" And whats the point of this exactly? Behind the screen it's like "stfu faggot you suck" and we all know that Protoss is the reason he hasn't won anything, aint that right Mr. Fields?

O.O HuK is actually going to MLG?!?!? Then we all know that MLG is... a no contest HuK will win it and lets not forget he'll also kick ass in soccer!! HuK FIGHTING!!!
I'm pumped for this event, but a bit sad the OP spoiled last nights GOM WC games between Huk and MVP, as somebody who can't stay up to watch the games live, I was hoping to watch those when I got home from work tonight. Would be nice to put that result in spoilers.
I really hope that all the good players like naniwa/naama/cruncher going to make it out of the open brackets. Overall really really pumped for this tournament since so many people want to proove themselves like IdrA/Tyler/Incontrol/Grubby/Liquid overall... they are all sooo eager to win.
Sundance did a small preview video of the setup, there are a LOT more computers this year...I'm talking like 3-4-5 times more than last year, wow.
Watched the video, what's to stop a player from listening to the casters on the main stage, there are no booths and they seem rather close. What's to even stop a player looking at the main stage? The video made it kinda hard to see, but it looked like the stage could be viewable by a few of the computers.
The open bracket is so stacked. Poor guys who wont be able to make it. Who of the list with players like Naniwa, Huk, Haypro, Cruncher, Naama, Fenix, Minigun, Grubby,Vibe, etc. wont even make it in the groups? ridicolous.
I absolutely love this write-up's, honestly I _really_ love them, please never stop doing them. Gives so much extra to an tournament, Really love the ranking as well, this is gonna be 1 hell of a tourny..:D the only thing I'm sad about is that its over in 4 days or so :D
Very much looking forward to MLG. Team liquid players have hit a rough patch lately but hopefully they'll do well in Dallas and show that it's just bad luck.
I really want Grubby to make a good run... Out of all the WC3 players, he by far has the most talent i've seen out of anyone besides FOXLyn.
I also hope HuK finally breaks his LAN slump and shows what all the training in Korea has really done. Nerves have definitely been getting the best of him. Its only a matter of time.
HuK and Grubby fighting!!11!!!!
edit: Also TY TL for wishing me a happy B-Day LOL.
Hey, uh, I clicked on the event time n's stuff, and got confused. What times does it start on saturday and sunday? does it start at the bolded time, or is that just the recomended time?

I would ASSUME they are going to use some sort of noise cancelling earbuds in headsets or something along those lines, they have in the past talked about wanting to do something.
Personally I really want to see Grubby do well, his games on his stream have been really good and his game sense is definitely more Starcraft adapting-esque than just mimic'ing early/mid game builds that he's seen. I'm really rooting hard for him.
Others I'm thinking have a good shot to make it out of open would be players like Naniwa, Cruncher, Moonan, dde, minigun, axslav. Man, as I write these names it just makes me think there are SO many players that have qualifying ability. I'm going to go with the hot protoss's and guys who have shown to have open bracket experience in winning tournaments.
Man, the format explanation is extremely helpful, props to motbob for that...it almost seems ridiculously hard to get through the open bracket now, but should be fun nonetheless.
This weekend is going nothing but watching starcraft as soon as I get home. Sit in my chair, grab a blanket, some water, food, plug in the hd key and open the TL lr thread, irc, and vent and watch and chat on the lr thread/irc and with my friends on vent (really got them into watching and are super hyped after watching tsl, going to be their first mlg), then wake up the next day and start all over. MLG brings a lot of really good and tense games with an atmosphere of being there.
Wow... there is just too much talent... especially in that huge open bracket. I am interested to see which really good players can't make it out. Good preview! It's always nice to get another look at all the players and their recent history.
[MLG's #1 ranked player, Liquid`HuK, was at first not attending MLG Dallas 2011. However, a quick exit from the GSL World Championships at the hands of IM.Mvp
GAAHHHHH SPOILER that. The first game of the series is on my other monitor(Mvp is about to put his second depot down to finish walling in). Didnt even occur to me that this thread was going to have spoilers
If Athene actually wins, and it is really him playing, I honestly think the SC2 world will implode so quickly everyone will have to wonder what just happened.
Maybe he has a super cheese, or will pull a Sheth and no-show, but I am going to be seeing how far he gets very closely. If he wins, I will legitimately give up BW and SC2.
Also, here's hoping day9 is actually going to play
Got an exam on Friday and then it's smooth sailing starcraft all weekend. I feel so spoiled that I have awesome games to watch every weekend between TSL, MLG, and the GSL World Championship :0 What am I gonna do when it all ends
I hope Huk does very well in the open bracket to show people that it is possible to win the whole thing through the open bracket (when this format was announced, people were saying it was too unfair towards the seeds)
It's been a tough few weeks for (Z)Liquid`Haypro and (T)Fnatic.Fenix. Both have been regarded as elite players but both have shown disappointing results lately. Fenix bombed out of IEM world championships (0-10 in groups) and was eliminated from the TSL3 by his teammate Sen. While you can hardly blame him for losing to his Code S level teammate, Fenix is looking to show...
Perhaps this is a typo, or am I reading this wrong? Sen is in Code S?
Open Bracket - It is a shame that most of these matches will not be broadcast, because among them, there could be a match to remember.
What? Noooooo.
There are so many great players in the open bracket. Actually I care more about the open bracket games, because they are about elimination. In the group games nobody will be eliminated anyway.
pregame show starts at 5:15 PM when? +5 -0- -3 +2 ?? could someone tell me =) =) =)
And why the fuck can't i log in after making and activating my account?
The activation link is used and can't be used again,,when i try i get *We could not find any account with the given activation code. Please create a new account.*
You probably know of (Z)CatZ and (Z)Destiny. Both are fun and outspoken, generating endless entertainment for their fans through their words and creative play. But can you name any tournaments they've won?
Catz won the first justin.tv invitational earlier this year.
Hype hype hype! Can't wait, I'm glad i was waiting till the last minute to get my passes because i'm on call for work this weekend But I'll be glued to the monitor. Really wanting an incontrol win (or top 4) or a huk win~
Naama missed his flight to dallas, because flight from helsinki to frankfurt was late. Tomorrow his new flight will (if in schedule) arriwe to dallas 2h 15min earlier than the last call for checkin. Hope he will make it / he can play even though he might be just a little late from the checkin.
HuK in the open bracket is going to be a long way to the Pool games, but at least the hard work will pay off when he wins his second MLG victory this weekend!! HuK FIGHTING!!
Stereoidbucket incontrol is gonna go out face first in match number uno. Destiny is gonna be demolished, whilst Catz might be able to fight just a little bit. Huk is going to be eliminated after making some absurdly bad call and end up bing way behind, and cruncher is going to be smiling his way far up the brackets. TLO fighting!
I'd like to see Grubby do well. Same for Incontrol, I feel like this tournament is a huge weight on his shoulders. I'd also like to see idra play minimal protoss.
On April 01 2011 11:34 Leatherface wrote: Does anyone know where the stream is and when it will start???
check the calender stream will be up on the right
There is no MLG at calendar atm, hopefully someone will update with stream link(s) etc.
Stream for MLG events is always on the MLG mainpage. as soon as the event starts they change the MLG site and you will automatically go to there. site is: www.mlgpro.com
there will also be a link to it from here as soon as it starts you can't miss it.
The writeup seemed pretty good, but one thing bothered me "Sjow’s tournament results have been all over the place, and his lack of consistent results has plagued him ever since release"
That's a joke right? Sjow has won like 30 k from tournaments >.>, without being in the gsl. If that isn't consistent I don't know what is.
Why do so many people say the starting times are bad for Europeans?
If the TL calender is right it starts Friday/saturday) at 0:30, ok thats tough but Saturday 19:00 and Sunday 16:30, looks totally fine, plus it's a weekend ofc.
I personally won't see much to my regret but the times look ok to me.

Tonights stream ends at 6:45 am if there are no delays, and there are always delays. Sure it's the weekend but that's still a bit rough. They usually replay the entire stream the next day though if you can't stay up.
Awesome write-up. Got me even more pumped for MLG than i already was! I hope MLG manages to squeeze in one or two good matches from the open bracket into their coverage.
looking forward to seeing Incontrol and tyler. I'd love to see HuK but i dont think he'll get far enough, it'll be tought getting rushed back from korea and everything
I would like to watch it .. but I have to party on friday. And as everyone knows, saturday comes after that. The problem is ... I party ~4-5 a.m. here, then I sleep for 2-3 hours and watch oz vs skt. Maybe tomorrow MLG

Would like to help out with that, alas - MLG site is not loading at all for me at the moment. Hope they can fix whatever issues they have before the event starts.
This occurs with all MLG event openings. It usually takes 30 minutes to 50 minutes to rectify all of the issues.
Note, this is a standard issue and has been even before Stacraft was included. So with everyone from the Starcraft community trying to watch, it is only to be expected for this to continue to occur.
They should have it fixed soon. I'm just stating that this is nothing new and almost always happens.

Ya i think 2005 was when he casted his first tournament? Maybe not sure. BUT about the stream twitter mlg they just said it will start at 6:30 central time. 7:30 pst. No games have been played i guess, they will probably start early tomorrow or run late tonight.
HuK wins his first round. Merlin wins his first round. Idrone wins his first round. Kawaiirice wins his first round. Fnaticfenix wins his first round. LiquidHaypro wins his first round. LzGamer wins his first round. RootCatz wins his first round. This is Jimmy wins his first round.
But I wonder if all these are from walkovers, seems like most games have not been played yet anyway.
lol in game 2 of idra vs socke idra thought he had seen a gateway instead of a stargate with his drone and expected the warpgaterush because of that. luckily socke canceled that stargate and really threw down a couple of warpgates xD so sockes mindgame failed coz of idras failscout -.-
I watched all the MLG's from 2010, don't remember them being this bad. Sucks this is the first time I decided to buy an HQ pass... wonder what they changed.
I'm sitting up excited to watch this ...........?? Watch what... Oh? WTF is this MLG?! And wtf is HQ? LOL? Goodnight. Never support MLG again please, this suck.

Yeah this was my first .. and now the last.. time I'll watch MLG. I can read about the results later and in the mean time, play some SC2!
This is a big joke. Respect is being lost really fast, and personally I am not going to be supporting anymore MLG events. High traffic is absolutely no excuse as when it comes to an international tournament, one should always overbudget and overcompensate. Very very embarrassing and for the sake of e-sports, I hope MLG really does improve on their streaming service.
Is it me or does the MLG have the worst site possible to navigate. I know there are brackets somewhere on it, but they make it impossible to find. Same for actual standings for the tournament.
stream should be fine for the rest of the weekend. don't give up on mlg =) they like to take their time. they got the stage, they got the seats, next up should be the stream
nothing but a big fat joke. wow, i never gonna watch anything from MLG due lack of preparation. i try since 2 days to view the stream, never got one second to see. no excuse for "high traffic" ehhhm, are you noobs ? i cannot take MLG any longer serious. shame for exclamations of other nations due "high traffic" (im sure, if i was in NA, i could watch without a problem)
On April 03 2011 07:07 JohnnyReverb wrote: (im sure, if i was in NA, i could watch without a problem)
You're just plain wrong. I live in NA and have been refreshing the stream every hour or less for the past 2 days and haven't gotten 1s of stream to work for me, either
