While I acknowledge and understand that MP3 results in a bigger file size, I think that it is prudent that the TL staff looks at the essence of what a podcast is: something that you will listen to, on your ipod/Zune, while in the car or on the bus.

Now while I don't claim to make any predictions about where the vast majority of TL users listen to this podcast, it stands to reason that there is a large percentage that indeed listen to it in this fashion. And making those users go through extra work of converting it to mp3... I don't know, just seems like a destroys the original intent of the cast for the benefit of saving a buck. =(

Vorbis has been around long enough that there is no reason that Microsoft or Apple shouldn't support it. Direct your hate to your "MP3" player manufacturer for not supporting an open and free codec. There's also 3rd party firmware you can get to extend the ability of some iPods at least.

Modern browsers also include built-in Vorbis support; I added this to the OP.

Fair enough. Again, it is because our bandwidth is so close to the limit due to the beta release. It isn't a matter of just "a buck".

Anyone have a transcript? =p

You're saying that you'd rather have someone type out the entire cast for you to read instead of 1) downloading a 10mb VLC program that is basically the standard player anyway or 2) converting it in 30 seconds. If this extra few minutes of effort is going to stop you from listening to every one of these from now on, well that's your choice.

Great pod cast as usual!

For those that can't play .ogg files (poor lost souls! ) you can convert them at http://media.io/

You could just use a better media player that is not WMP :p
But even if you refuse to do so, you can still play it in WMP, you just need the appropriate Directshow filter.

I have several media players installed on my PC and they all play Ogg Vorbis out of the box, so I would still recommend a different player.

For example VLC (what HB suggested, doesn't need ANY codecs, as it comes with its own and it pretty much plays everything). Winamp now plays it out of the box, foobar does. Those are pretty much as mainstream as it gets...

Also I'm getting tired of this. Just talk about the content of the podcast. Everything has already been said and in the end you will just have to accept that we don't want to pay for hundreds of GB of extra bandwidth, if it can easily be avoided. Tons of solutions were posted in this thread.

I don't want to complain because I appreciate the podcast, but iPods don't play oggs and I'm sure I'm not the only one using an iPod for listening to podcasts. I can and will convert it but it's just extra hassle

Yup I agree. My suggestion, if anyone cares, is to make it mp3 or mp4 (aac) in the future. In that way more people will be happy.
(btw: ogg/vorbis files play in Winamp, Foobar2000 and other good music players.)

Why would you even suggest that we use mp3 in the future, when it is what we used previously and now decided (and stated in this thread) that it uses too much bandwidth (ogg Vorbis achieves similar results with much smaller file size - for voice only). We are talking hundreds of GB of traffic per episode here.

Ok ,so the bandwith is that bad? However i want to point out that vorbis might not better for voice than lame abr mp3, especially because the version you're using (1.20) doesn't contain last improvements. 48kbps mono voice mp3 (lame abr) (as opposed to 48kbps vorbis) will most likely sound very good too. Of course AAC (nero FTW) is even better and with tricks (like HE-AAC+PS) will sound decent at 16kbps or possibly lower (although most ipods won't play that properly).
Finally maybe upload a high quality mp3 version to a file sharing site like mediafire/megaupload?

Anyway, great podcast, IMO best in the series, waiting patiently for more

Commended for using oggs.

But for those complaining about the "lack of micro".

If you want to play a game where success depends on quickly pressing buttons in a specific order, play Guitar Hero. It's good, but don't play strategy games.

If you want to play a game, where mastering the control scheme, including glitches, is the most important thing for winning, play quake 3 arena or quakelive. It's awesome, but don't play strategy games.

If you want play a game where you have absolute control over every aspect and action of every unit, play a turn based game. There a really great ones out there.

An RTS is about quickly making decisions under pressure. Not about overcoming deficient control schemes. Or showing units their front from their ass.

Why is the play of so many top tier SC1 players described as robotic? It's because they have to robotically do all the things a computer should be doing anyway. Stuff like "Do I want my drone to sit idle by the hatchery or to mine?", "Do I want to surround my opponent with my melee units or to go in one by one?" are no decisions. Forcing you to constantly toil just to make those kind of basic things happen takes away depth from the game. You don't make chess pieces weigh 200lbs and then say it adds a lot of strategic depth to the game it being so hard to move anything at all.

Sure, seeing some of the micro battles of pro players is impressive. About the same kind of impressive to see people pulling off a basketball match in a foot deep of snow. It was about time this playing field was cleared of all this.
