Why would you even suggest that we use mp3 in the future, when it is what we used previously and now decided (and stated in this thread) that it uses too much bandwidth (ogg Vorbis achieves similar results with much smaller file size - for voice only). We are talking hundreds of GB of traffic per episode here.

I'll probably get yelled at for this, but I'm just letting u guys know I'm gona skip out on this podcast. I see you have good reasons for doing it, but I have my own reasons for not downloading a whole new media player for 30 mins of coverage. Maybe after everyone else goes .ogg I'll have to get back on the wagon.

Reason we switched to ogg from mp3 is size. We almost busted our bw cap last month because the podcasts were download a lot, so we'll see how this works out for now.

The previous casts took me about 15-20 min to dl, this one took 1 second and works flawlessly on vlc. In short: <3

I managed to open it with both Audacity and FireFox (lol), and since VLC seems to open it as well I really don't see what the fuss is all about.

yeah seriously mp3 was working so so so much better.Really no reason what so ever to change it. I probably cant even listen to it now on my ipod. thank you soo much!

im pretty sure the latest versions of LAME mp3 arent considerably worse than ogg vorbis anymore... using a smaller VBR or ABR lame format could still reduce the filesize and still keep it accessible to the less software-equipped of us

Not like VBR is gonna make a whole lot of difference when it's just people talking...

I have 3 or 4 media players installed (for various reasons) and they all play ogg vorbis out of the box -.- It's not like ogg vorbis is obscure in any way, hell Blizzard even uses it for the game sounds in SC2.

Sure, it's not ideal for people who would only listen to it in standalone players that can't play the format..., a little drawback that is certainly outweighed by the money TL saves. For anyone else there's really no reason at all to complain.

And now back to discussing the actual content of this podcast!

switching the file format really cuts accessibility down. Many people will not download a new media player just for playing these files.

But also the reason why your ogg files are so much smaller isn't because the format is better at compressing the files its that they are at 48kb/s instead of the 128 your mp3 files where encoded at, or at least the last sc2 beta podcast. If you encode mp3s at a lower bit rate that should be better for your bandwidth and your users.

Somewhat annoyed that I have no way to open this; and since it's the only file I've ever seen with this sort of type, I'm not going to waste space on my computer with a new player when EVERY other sound file I've ever seen can be opened in windows media player... Oh well. Guess I'll have to catch the casts when they're actually on.

Anyone have a transcript? =p
