It doesn't really matter if you get scumread and can't convince anyone of him being mafia via that (which you did? -- got scumread at least which pushes down your credibility in the first place).
If you don't get scumread and the town still fails to realize someone are mafia (as you are making sense in your reasoning) then they (town) are just stupid.
