1. He's actually 3P. Mafia would have no reason not to believe him, and probably want him dead. All iterations of 3P are anti-mafia in some way. 2. He's mafia fakeclaiming. Only the real 3P would know, and would probably not care unless they were defender with the plan to become town (the best play for the defender in this setup).
