Weekend starts have historically been very bad for activity, and given that I announced start on Monday/Tuesday (depending on whatever timezone you are on) it would be bad to change it now. Didn't really expect to get confirmations so fast either - last time I ran a newbie it took quite a while to get everyone confirmed.

Day 1 The discovery of uranium fission in December 1938, reported in the 6 January 1939 issue of Die Naturwissenschaften by Otto Hahn, and Fritz Strassmann, and its correct identification as nuclear fission by Lise Meitner in the 11 February 1939 issue of Nature, generated intense interest among physicists. The Hungarian physicist Leó Szilárd, who was residing in the United States at the time, realized that the neutron-driven fission of heavy atoms could be used to create a nuclear chain reaction that could yield vast amounts of energy for electric power generation or atomic bombs. He was worried that the Nazis might be also running research along these lines. By the suggestion of his fellow scientist Eugene Wigner, he decided to ask Albert Einstein to write a letter to convince someone of sufficient authority to ensure that appropriate steps were taken. This culminated in the so called Einstein–Szilárd letter to the president of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt. The letter warned that: In the course of the last four months it has been made probable — through the work of Joliot in France as well as Fermi and Szilárd in America — that it may become possible to set up a nuclear chain reaction in a large mass of uranium, by which vast amounts of power and large quantities of new radium-like elements would be generated. Now it appears almost certain that this could be achieved in the immediate future. This new phenomenon would also lead to the construction of bombs, and it is conceivable — though much less certain — that extremely powerful bombs of a new type may thus be constructed. A single bomb of this type, carried by boat and exploded in a port, might very well destroy the whole port together with some of the surrounding territory. However, such bombs might very well prove to be too heavy for transportation by air. This letter was delivered on October 11, 1939. Roosevelt took this very seriously, and replied: I found this data of such import that I have convened a Board consisting of the head of the Bureau of Standards and a chosen representative of the Army and Navy to thoroughly investigate the possibilities of your suggestion regarding the element of uranium. This eventually lead to the creation of Manhattan Engineering District, a project to investigate the possibility of creating a nuclear weapon. October 21, 1939 The Uranium Committee meets for the first time. March 1940 John R. Dunning and his colleagues demonstrate that fission is more readily produced in the rare uranium-235 isotope. February 24, 1941 Glenn T. Seaborg's research group discovers plutonium. March 28, 1941 Seaborg's group demonstrates that plutonium is fissionable. May 3, 1941 Seaborg proves plutonium is more fissionable than uranium-235. July 2, 1941 The British MAUD report concludes that an atomic bomb is feasible. January 19, 1942 Roosevelt approves production of the atomic bomb. August 13, 1942 The Manhattan Engineer District is established in New York City, Colonel James C. Marshall commanding. August 1942 Seaborg produces a microscopic sample of pure plutonium. September 17, 1942 Colonel Leslie R. Groves is appointed head of the Manhattan Engineer District. October 19, 1942 Groves decides to establish a separate scientific laboratory to design an atomic bomb. November 25, 1942 Groves selects Los Alamos, New Mexico as the bomb laboratory. Oppenheimer is chosen laboratory director. December 28, 1942 Roosevelt approves detailed plans for building production facilities and producing atomic weapons. March 1943 Researchers begin arriving at Los Alamos. April 1943 Bomb design work begins at Los Alamos. Los Alamos Laboratory has been founded! The Soviets have sent spies to steal the nuclear secrets! The day ends Wednesday, Oct 08 9:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00) (in ).
