Endgame: Long Live the King!

The news of the approaching army had spread quickly throughout the city, and iamperfection found the ensuing chaos maddening. He had been hard at work coordinating the efforts of the constitutional council, militia, and regular army; with the onset of the revolution, the three bodies were only superficially tied by spoken promises and handshakes. iamperfection expected that these alliances would be tested in a time of war, and so sought to solidify them immediately…a uniform, united front would be needed if the city was to survive.

I am…or was…just an entertainer. Why is this burden placed on me?

He of course knew the answer; he knew that there was no other. As such, he waged war, before the war had even begun. He waged war with quill and parchment, with messengers and bribes, and sometimes, with threats. The door to his modest flat was in a constant state of motion; opening for a new caller just as the last one bid him farewell.

He called the remaining council to convene. The council, like everything else, was in flux. Through its various depletions and reformations, it was difficult even for someone well informed to keep track of the faces and names. He eyed each of them as they entered, those who answered his call, who still fought for the revolution: Shady Sands, Kville, marvellosity, Djagulingu, and Chezinu.

“Please, have a seat,” said iamperfection, “we have one last matter to attend to before the invaders fall upon our city.”

He paused, wishing he did not have to say what he was about to say.

“There are traitors among us still. Messages have been tampered with, bribes have gone missing, and orders have been intercepted. Make no mistake gentlemen; the revolution is in great peril. We will soon be doing battle on two fronts. If we cannot conquer the demons we have within, here, today…then the armies of the west will crush us all underfoot.”

The council members looked up at him, thunderstruck. He continued.

“Those with sufficient power and sway to cause the disruption I have seen are here. Look around you. The monarchists that remain must be in this room.”

Those gathered complied. They looked around, faces twisted with an unknowing suspicion, as if they were seeing each-other for the first time.

Marvellosity cleared his throat.

“I have brought a contingent of the militia, as you instructed,” he said.

“The die is cast then. The militia is under orders to let no man leave this flat until we have rooted out the last of the monarchists among us. They will be executed, privately, in my cellar by a militia firing squad. The people must not know that we are at odds in the 11th hour. Once our business is completed here, we will take to the field of battle, as will be expected of us. Our fate, and the fate of the revolution, will then be out of our hands.”

------------------------

The militia-men clustered around the door of the flat were doing a poor job of alleviating their own boredom. They tossed dice, chewed leaf, and cleaned their muskets, but these were only temporary diversions.

“Six hours talking. Politicians must be full of a lot of shit if it takes that long to spew it all out. I’ve never spoken for more than a few seconds at a time.”

“That’s because you only know a dozen words.”

iamperfection peeked his head out.

“It is time,” he said, beckoning them in.

------------------------

The militia descended the stairs to the cellar, and found Kville huddled, alone, in the far corner. His brow was dotted with beads of sweat, and he was breathing heavily. The rest of the council looked on him, with both loathing and pity.

“Let us be done with this gruesome business. Do not hesitate,” said Chezinu, pointing at Kville.

The militia, used to following orders, raised their muskets immediately. Kville shrieked, sprang from his crouch, and ran straight at his executioners. The muskets exploded. Kville’s momentum carried him half-way before he fell like a sack of grain, dead before he hit the ground.

The militia dropped their muskets, and raised their pistols, aiming them at the remaining council members.

“What is the meaning of this?!” iamperfection demanded.

The council was no more. Two of its former members broke away and joined the threatening militia. They did not carry weapons, but they raised their fingers in accusation.

“This was never your battle. It wasn’t your battle when GMarshal fired his fateful first shot, and it isn’t your battle now. You are an entertainer, so I will put it in terms you will understand. You were an unwitting performer in the King’s grand production, a marionette puppet. This is the finale.”

------------------------

The King returned to the city, his victorious army at his back, and a distinctly Western woman at his side. The people greeted them with open arms; they lined the streets in droves, shouting their adulation, reaching out as if to grasp their deliverer, their conqueror of the invading West. The city broke out in festival; every cask of wine was uncorked, and the trumpeting fanfares of the brass trios could be heard even the farmlands.

The King had won them all. With the invaders approaching, his city’s defenses were in disarray; with conflicting orders and no centralized leadership from the council, the fortifications were incomplete, the supply lines ambiguous, and the chain of command inscrutable. The King arrived then, and changed everything. He reformed the lines, and marched them south towards higher ground.

The battle was elementary. The King had ordered his muskets to fire once and then retreat through the valley at their backs. When the Westerners pursued them into the valley, they were set upon by the King’s cavalry thundering down the adjacent hillside. The charge was swift, and irresistible. The Westerners broke badly, and scattered as the King chased them down.

Many years later, historians presented the tale in its entirety. The Kings of both East and West had arranged the battle. The King in the East depended on his agents within the city to foil and mislead the revolutionists at every turn. When the situation ripened, the King in the West dispatched his ramshackle ‘army’ of conscripts, slaves, and militia. As they neared, the people of the East would look to the revolutionaries for leadership and protection, but would find them in total disarray. It was a simple matter then for the King of the East to seize initiative and come to their salvation. With the army at his back, and the commoners on his side once more, the revolution would come to a quiet end. The two Kings sealed their agreement by marriage, joining their two ancient bloodlines together, and cementing the monarchies of both lands for many generations to come.

On this day though, the common folk were blissful in their ignorance.

“Long live the King!” they shouted, “Long live the King!”

Kville
Welcome to Normal Mafia III, you are a Glorious Revolutionary. Your name is Alexia Portal, charismatic leader and charlatan. You have sparked the seed of this revolution with your fiery oration and burning passion, despite not having any intention of following through with things. Now that things have spiraled out of control, you are just letting the current carry you wherever it may. So now, to avoid the mob turning on you, you must find and eradicate the monarchists. Good luck!

iamperfection
Welcome to Normal Mafia III, you are a Glorious Revolutionary. Your name is Jean-Pierre Cassel. You used to be a public entertainer of some renown. That is until this revolution swept you up. Due to your public acclaim and generally unprepossessing stance you have been made a member of the "constitutional council". Now you don't especially care for bloodshed, but this is a chance to rise to a status you have never even dreamed of before, and if some heads have to fly, so be it.

Shady Sands
Welcome to Normal Mafia III, you are a Glorious Revolutionary. Your name is Julie Delpy, the traveling fortuneteller. Now that the uprising is in full ascendance, you've thrown in your lot with the local people, and seek whatever it is they seek. If only the axle of your wagon hadn't broken you wouldn't be caught in this jam. Anyway, this is as good a chance as any to rise to a better station in life. Lead the mobs and exterminate the monarchists.

Djagulingu
Welcome to Normal Mafia III, you are a Glorious Revolutionary. Your name is Edward Gibbon, and you aren't from around these parts. You came across the ocean to learn all about this "glorious revolution". Now you have become inflamed with their ideals and seek to bring about the glorious changes that their charismatic leaders speak of. Go and bring about the bloody reckoning you've read and heard so much about. Vengeance will be victorious!

marvellosity
Welcome to Normal Mafia III, you are a Monarchist Thug. Your name is Louis Lyautey, and your family has traditionally protected the ancient bloodline of de Montmerci from all threats, internal and external. You have been trained in the arts of combat, armed and unarmed, from a young age, and you will not allow any harm to befall your wards, no matter what the rabble may want. You also know that right now discretion is key. Every night you may take a citizen aside and "persuade" him or her to stay home that night. In addition to the regular Monarchist Powers you may intimidate someone at night, roleblocking them and keeping them from performing any actions. Your target will be notified that he was roleblocked.

Chezinu
Welcome to Normal Mafia III, you are a Disguised Royal by the name of Louis Philippe, you used to be powerful and well respected, now you are forced to hide like a common criminal. You won't allow this to stand. You will slaughter this "constitutional council", shut down their so called "revolution", destroy their dreams and aspirations and restore proper order. It won't bring back your dead freinds and family, but by god on high, you won't let these "revolutionaries" get away with their heinous crimes. Not as long as you live, at least. Go, and be a scourge unto your enemies.

if I had to describe his playstyle, it'd be a coked up rabbit with the attention of a goldfish injecting caffeine into himself directly through an IV drip. it's like a reel of random animated shorts where things just blow up randomly
