And now, I present to you:

THE BEARIES!!!
(please note: Bearies are lighthearted trophies I decided to give out because I felt like it. No insult or emotional distress is intended by the Bearies. If you are insulted by a Bearie, it is probably because you are angry and/or neoconservative and/or German, and hate web 2.0 )

Fun awards I thought I'd give out to players for their different accomplishments in this game. It was a ton of fun, and I didn't want it to end without at least some recognition for some players, so without further ado...

BLABBERMOUTH BEARIE: For the most active player

Goes to LunarDestiny! By my count, he had over 200 posts in this thread, which is massive considering that makes up about 1/7 of the total thread content. This man was on at all times, was always paying attention to the thread, and while some of his posts erred a bit on the spammy side, major props have to be given for just the sheer amount of time he spent paying attention to this game.

As a side note, I'd love to see your endgame excel. I bet it's a lot better than mine

ABOVE AVERAGE JOE BEARIE: For the best town-aligned player

has to go as a tie between the two detectives: DCLXVI and deconduo! These two fine gentlemen pretty much won the game for town by themselves with some truly clairvoyant rolechecks, not only rooting out scum, but forcing Darth to essentially play as a townie through Day 2 and 3, and causing the mafia's nefarious plans to unravel and collapse around them. Well played, sirs, and thank you for saving our butts when we needed you most! I look forward to playing with you guys again.

SUPERVILLAIN BEARIE: For the best mafia player

most definitely goes to crate, with DarthThienAn as a close second! Darth was also an excellent mafia player, managing to sweep his way into office on day 1, but he did overstep his boundaries just a little bit on the last day, and his position as mayor actually worked against him as he was under intense scrutiny, which led to his downfall. crate, on the other hand, started off strong by establishing himself with some solid, seemingly town-aligned logic and analysis, built up a trusting public relationship with the town, and continued throughout the game with great posting and town logic - never letting on that he was in fact the Godfather, and the evil mastermind behind most mafia plots. From my semi-close rereading of the whole game, I did not notice a single post that seriously considered crate as a possible mafia suspect, which is huge for a mafia player. He played extremely well, I actually think he could have taken the game much further if he wanted to, even by himself, and I look forward to enjoying playing games with both of these players in the future.

RADFIELD JR. BEARIE: For the most hard-luck player

belongs to barth, who has now been killed night 1 in two games I've played in with him It's especially sad because he seems to be extremely excited about playing, but he just seems to attract night hits. Hopefully this won't continue in the future.

KORYNNE BEARIE For the best rookie

is awarded to YellowInk! Coming in for his first game (unless I am totally and completely wrong, which I'm pretty sure I'm not), YellowInk showed that he wasn't afraid to put himself out there, running a valiant but ultimately doomed campaign for mayor. In his role of pardoner, he continued to work as one of the best public town organizers I've seen, and was extremely active. In a climate where new players often feel overwhelmed and tend to be quieter and just attempt to soak everything in, YellowInk jumped right in to the deep end, got as involved as he could, and helped town immensely while he was alive. Well done, sir!

TDOT BEARIE For the best troll

is awarded to onihunter for his hilarious acceptance of his fate and his proceeding to spam up the thread with image macros and youtube videos while hampering town discussion (like any good scum player ), and also bumatlarge, for his complete refusal of his fate, and his proceeding to insult every member of his team that abandoned him, as well as several other random players. Their reactions to knowing their fate was sealed were varied, but incredibly awesome.

BABY BEARIE: For the cutest mod :3

goes to flamewheel, obvs :3 :3 :3

'Twas a great game, folks. Can't wait for the next one.

(No actual bears were harmed in the making of the Bearies. The entire country of Germany, however, was deeply insulted.)

I am slightly confused as to why mafia conceded. Here's how I see the rest of the game playing out:

We have four days till we win if neither Darth nor myself get outed. Five if I die, and I think six if Darth does.

MTF would have clue'd us both to death long before that even if we played perfectly I think.

Darth probably cleared in the eyes of the town
crate had absolutely no suspicion on him from what I can tell

Both of these are (or should have been) wrong. Darth's hands were tied and any clear-thinking townie should have seen this. I was under suspicion from bum's blunder of suggesting I get rolechecked and possibly some people saw what I wasn't saying, I dunno.

Plus, the sacrifice-half-your-team ploy would have been just so incredibly badass.

Wasn't a ploy. We do it or we still lose oni + bum and in addition lose Darth.

Darth should have argued for a better second lynch than hugo on the last day if we wanted to win. I couldn't do it because of how vehemently I was against Deuce on Day 2. I didn't expect the town to vote with me on that one, but then I should have expected that no one else would bother to pick a lynch target since the only time there was any actual voting controversy was Day 2.

Thoughts on my play:

...

Don't trust people who post a ton of great analysis. Example: crate. Dude appeared extremely town-aligned to me when I read over his posts, but only because they were long and substance-filled. I really have to read more carefully into people's voting habits and WHAT they are saying, and look a lot closer to try and catch contradictions.

I didn't contradict myself (I think). Everything I said was what I'd have said from a town standpoint. My analysis was legit except maybe on onihunter. If you were looking for contradictions you'd have picked up a lot of townies before you picked up me; town has less reason to be paranoid about small slip-ups (my average time composing a post was probably twice as long this game as it was when I was town).

edit: Actually I lied a little bit; I think I'd have been more aggressive as town.

My tells were in when I was talking (extremely hard to catch unless you know my AIM/MSN or what other forums I visit, since I wasn't posting on TL during my fake absences and otherwise you can't tell my fake ones from actual legit ones) and in what I wasn't saying (which was very noticeable from my position, of course; it was perfectly catchable).

Wow, I didn't think the game would end quite so handily.

For my part, I played half the game in PMs. I have never played mafia with PMs and it really is dramatic how much it improves the town's strength. While allowing PMs puts a nifty wrinkle into the game, combining the advantages of both PMs and clues is immense.

At some of the commentary to my play, the vast majority of my posts were just fishing for reactions once elected. The early game was just blah blah look at me, I'm town.

Since it's prettier, when I was killed, this is what my roster looked like:

And for the record, I was highly suspicious of crate-godfather (with if it wasn't him, it was either zeks or BrownBear, but zeks had a clue cleared on him already). I just couldn't figure good clue attatchments yet, so I was letting it lay.

The only thing I regret was not passing on to MTF that someone had roleclaimed bodyguard to me. I didn't think mafia would go for the bodyguard and me in the same turn - I figured it'd immediately get DTA and littlechava hung hitting at least one mafia. I was really surprised that neither DTA or littlechava got into a fight and started pointing fingers.

I had CompX as a confirmed medic from requesting him to cover MTF on night 2. I could have put him on LaXer, but I valued the potential of 2 unused rolechecks on DCLXVI higher than that since DCLXVI's info made sense and he was willing to go along with my suspicions.

I wish there was an easy way to put out all that went back and forth in PMs, but it'd just be messy. So if anyone has any questions for me, feel free to throw them my way.

I was also kinda timid about calling anyone out/going public with my PM experiences after you guys died because I hadn't really confirmed that I was actually a medic with anyone in the circle. Darth had a lot more support for sure - and it's been revealed since that deconduo thought I was Mafia. So I probably would have ended up being hung if I actually did point fingers at Darth ;p

Yes, but after you got hung, DTA would be on the block if town has any sense. Anyone who had interacted with me (which was a decent number of people) knew I was holding my cards close - it would be fair to assume I didn't rat out the bodyguard to anyone by mistake and that's assuming I even knew who the bodyguard was.

Honestly when I saw the day play out, I was pretty convinced that both DTA and littlechava were mafia because it all got downplayed and tossed aside. I don't really understand why town didn't put more pressure on DTA about it. It all turned out alright in the end anyway.

That reminds me of something I wanted to mention because I was curious if anyone noticed it.

At the start of day 3 once my sources came in, I had my list of potential mafia at: 3 Lions, BrownBear, bumatlarge, crate, deconduo, Hugoboss21, onihunter (obv), and zeks, then Misder and TyranoS_NiveK being less likely. I had a few targets beyond this but I was pretty sure by far the most highly likely mafia were among those first seven, and if any were missed beyond these nine it was only one more.

Late in day 3 I posted some things to try to get folk talking and riled up. I straight up lied in the post about who I thought was more or less likely to be mafia but left a marker to back out of it in PMs to anyone that was concerned about inconsistancies. I wondered if anyone would pick up on it since I made it a little obvious: + Show Spoiler +

I didn't notice it, but if I'd been town I'd have been pretty upset with that play. You are directing town efforts in a direction they really shouldn't go and you know it?.

Hell that's like exactly what Bill Murray did last game he was mafia IIRC.

Well the godfather is just an add on - I assumed that if just one between zeks, you, or BrownBear were among mafia, you would be godfather. I therefore avoided requesting role checks on any of you. There were two major reasons that I suspected you.

One was that your first day content seemed strong but then later was insufficient. It's not that anything you said was wrong. Your logic was consistent and clear. There was just less and less of it as time went on. If you had had more to say on day 3 it would have helped mitigate this suspicion.

The second was in how you were talked about. Onihunter admitted in day 1 to sounding like he 'had a massive hardon' for you, and someone (I think it was onihunter again?) specifically suggested having you role checked. I'd have to dig to find the post, but the way it was presented was really suspicious.

In any case, I had no way to come after you. I just left you as 'unsure, but if mafia probably godfather'. I expected that you'd just have to get outted by clues in the endgame if you were with them.

Town was doing nothing. A lot. I'd rather have town going in a random direction than no direction. I was trying to drive action to give me more room to pick up tells - and the day's activities did lead me to suggesting bumatlarge (along with deconduo) to DCLXVI as good directions for rolecheck.

I think my Day 1 content was the least worthwhile of my first 3 days. It was about 10 minutes of thinking and really easy to write because it was just basic strategy. Simple strategy posts like that I don't put much weight into (especially for vanilla-ish setups) simply because it's so easy for the mafia to offer up the same things. I'd have still done it as town (it's nice to get a handle on who actually has the intelligence to realize how the game works), but it was the most fluff of all my posting.

There are two reasons my posting volume dropped off. The first was I started my internship, which means 11 hours that I was at home now becomes 11 hours that I wasn't. This had nothing to do with my role, and would have happened just as surely had I been town. The second was that no one else was doing anything either, which yes I was content to let happen (but as town I'd have been voting earlier and pointing fingers a bit earlier). But there was a lot more actual thinking behind the later posts.

Town was doing nothing. A lot. I'd rather have town going in a random direction than no direction.

So why not direct them at the people you think are mafia? To me this kind of deception just favors the reds, especially if the town starts to accept it (because then mafia start doing it instead of trying to play straight-up). (edit for clarity: I mean in the metagaming sense here)

edit: Though yeah, the way the rest of my team talked about me was not good for me.

Because the activity of the town wasn't getting anything done. I was pretty sure that I was better off gathering a case and presenting against mafia getting a likely hang than trying to get the town to do any actual work. So in reality I was trying to get the mafia to talk more than I was trying to get the townies to talk. I was more interested in having the mafia not think I was targeting accurately than worrying about the town accomplishing anything as a whole.

This choice was really more a function of the state of the game than something that speaks to my general philosophy on playing mafia.

I'm not sure why having the mafia not think you were targeting accurately helps you.

If you weren't elected, sure, I'd buy it. But you had perfect protection, so...?

The idea was to keep mafia tongues loose rather than protective of identity. If mafia think that my thought process is not a threat, support my idea of railing on everyone in the MooCow list, etc etc, it can be more telling than if I name mafia suspects and they just get defensive.

I'm not sure anyone else on my team responded to your post, and I think I'd have felt obligated to respond regardless of who you listed (otherwise someone should have definitely called me on it ... though with this town I suppose that may not have happened).
