Not sure whether China is the only nation to do this or whether it's sort of(?) widespread, but that's sort of depressing haha, especially seeing how those who don't do well probably don't have much of a future ahead of them since they've already dedicated their entire lives to preparing for the Olympics in some cases... In China if you win gold you get 1.4 mil plus a bar of gold worth 1.6 mil right now. Not to mention what the state, city, district gives (City almost always gives a nice apartment over 1 mil. You can't even imagine how seriously China cares about the Olympics. I think by 2020 or at most 2024 China will be first in medals.
4 million for a gold medal? This is dollars right?

They were saying in the UK press that people like Jessica Ennis will be making around £1million a year for a few years or something due to sponserships and such :S Not sure every gold medalist will be so lucky though :S

They won deservedly #1 in 2008 and since most of them were young they also won in 2012. But beating USA in medal count is really really hard. Interesting info I guess, but yeah beating USA is very difficult
But regardless of what the winners get, it still seems like those who don't win are rather screwed. The government has helped them and paid for all the training and whatnot, so if they don't win...well...not much in the way of rewards and because they've dedicated their lives to athletics, they may not have many useful skills. And, of course, there are those who never even make it onto the Olympic team I guess.
Edit: and yeah, that's a lot of money, is that for real?! 1.4 million in dollars(?), 1.6 in gold, 1 million in housing?!

I smell bullshit about the $1 million. It's probably a good amount, but according to this article, nowhere near $1 million.
Xiexia, who according to media reports won a national award of over $55,000, received double that from Guangdong Province, in addition to an Audi Q7.

I thought this was quite common. Over here most athletes already have a secure job waiting for them(not to say that it is high paying, but it is kind of a job for life).Various states giveout big prize money, plots of land, free life time travel across the country etc. Some companies sponsor awards, this year the prizes are 5 kilograms of gold for a gold medal, 3 for silver and 2 kilos for bronze.
Apart from this you have your own sponsorships and things like that
Here's what the gold medalist in shooting from the last olympics got
+ Show Spoiler + 2000 – Arjuna award. 2011 – Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (India's highest sports award). 2009 – Padma Bhushan.[20] 2011 - Honorary Lieutenant Colonel by Indian Territorial Army Awards for 2008 Olympics Gold medal 1.5 crore (US$271,500) by Mittal Champions Trust 50 lakh (US$90,500) cash prize by Central Govt[21] 25 lakh (US$45,300) cash prize by the State Government of Haryana.[22] 25 lakh (US$45,300) cash prize by the Board of Control for Cricket in India[23] 15 lakh (US$27,200) cash prize by Steel Ministry of India[24] 11 lakh (US$19,900) cash prize by the State Government of Bihar. sponsorship tie-ups with Samsung, BSNL and Sahara Group.[6] He is also the brand ambassador by State-run Steel Authority of India Ltd He was a given a few acres of land for a shooting range, (not sure about that).
I've been told the boxing guys make a lot more(movies, reality shows etc) even though it was only a bronze.
I'm just thinking about the guy who lost a podium place due to 0.8 points...no one will ever remember him o.0!!!

Wow, that's quite amazing. Please don't take this as an offense, but why is India so bad at the Olympics? They have the population that equals China's yet they have like <10 medals every year. Is it just lack of caring?

The Indian government probably doesn't throw tons of money (for training purposes) at athletes like the Chinese government does.
It could also be that everyone only cares about cricket in India, but then again sports like weightlifting, swimming, diving, and gymnastics didn't have much a following in China until athletes started taking home medals.

Didn't that American boxer get like $250k dollars for winning gold?
I wonder how much an Athlete like Tyson Gay makes though, in countries like Jamaica the sprinters are superstars, but in America I get the idea that most people only care about Athletics when the Olympics is on. He's one of the top sprinters in the world and I'm sure his training is the best it could be and fully funded, but I wonder how much he actually makes, probably enough to live comfortably if you include his endorsement deals, but it must be far far less than even the bench warmers in the major sports.

Total lack of interest,The interest this year has been like an all time high, people atleast know the names of the various athletes competing :p, and have a few stars to cheer for. Think about this, we have a 5 time world champion in boxing, and people only hear about her this year.
It's all cricket here, there are three channels dedicated to showing only cricket 24/7 here. India's current cricket captain's favorite game is actually football, but his school coach told him to switch to cricket because he was talented and could make easy money...he now earns more than wayne rooney, usain bolt and others. That should explain the lure that cricket has.
People like to watch winning, Hockey always has an interest because of the way we dominated the sport earlier, similarly cricket shot up after the world cup win in 1983 and replaced hockey as the top sport once hockey started to fall apart due to politics. People complained this year that they could not watch the shooting preliminaries, because of the gold medal last olympics(shooting as a spectator sport...? lol).
It's a weird cycle, people like to watch things where you win, but you cant win unless you can train well, receive proper funding/money. After the common wealth games performances(we finished second overall there) and the beijing olympics(medals in sports that are not as popular), people realized there are other sports in the world. The government and some millionaires realized that stuff like the Olympics are a feel good factor for people, so they've decided to up the budget for it, and the results , while not in medals, have been far better, top ten finishes, narrowly missing out etc. Hopefully next olympics will be a break out year.

the chinese government needs all the jingoistic nationalism it can generate from events like these to keep the people tethered to the COUNTRY it claims to represent. it's a calculated move for mass control.

Looking forward to the men's basketball gold medal match at the end of this Olympics keke. Pretty interesting one this year despite a few scandals here and there and some friendly arguing between nations ^^

If he were to earn more money than Rooney, Bolt, etc. then why has no one ever heard of him? There are tons of best paid athletes in the world rankings
A tonne of people know who Dhoni is. It's common knowledge in all cricketing nations. Of course someone from a non-cricket country isn't going to know him, but it's a big stretch to say no one has heard of him.

Not sure whether China is the only nation to do this or whether it's sort of(?) widespread, but that's sort of depressing haha, especially seeing how those who don't do well probably don't have much of a future ahead of them since they've already dedicated their entire lives to preparing for the Olympics in some cases... I thought this was quite common. Over here most athletes already have a secure job waiting for them(not to say that it is high paying, but it is kind of a job for life).Various states giveout big prize money, plots of land, free life time travel across the country, etc. Some companies sponsor awards, this year the prizes are 5 kilograms of gold for a gold medal, 3 for silver and 2 kilos for bronze. On August 12 2012 18:32 Cubu wrote: wow i can't believe america beat china in the medal tally? Swimming with all white team and athletics with all black team are the main providers of medals. Remove that and you have an average team in every sport.
